Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man? [Female role models]

And it got me thinking about how women are perceived and portrayed, especially in light of the recent Lara Croft controversy.

What real people or fictional characters would you guys consider to be positive female role models? What kinds of women should we be hoping our children, girls and boys, will emulate and respect?

Ladies that I think are pretty rad include:

Ripley.jpg
Ellen Ripley, lieutenant, alien-cruncher

Vasquez.jpg
Jenette Vasquez, PFC, smart gun operator and wisecracking badass

220px-Queen_Boudica_by_John_Opie.jpg
Boudica, queen of the British Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the Romans

tumblr_ks8otldAtI1qzn8r6o1_500.jpg
Khutulun, Mongol warrior princess

220px-Elizabeth_I_in_coronation_robes.jpg
Queen Elizabeth I, the "virgin" queen hahaha sure

Let us talk about women who are awesome and why. We can also discuss negative stuff if you really want, but I'd rather accentuate the positive because I am feeling chipper today.

Edit: this should probably go without saying but let me say anyway, NOT A RANGER THREAD, DON'T GO THERE, DUMMIES.

    I'm a big fan of

    240px-Leslie_Knope.jpg

She's a great, strong character, who is no more eccentric than any other character on Parks and Recreation.

One of the reasons I'm a big fan of the show is that they avoid succumbing to ridiculous stereotypes. It also has the only example of a libertarian that I didn't hate, but which is so far removed from any example of real libertarians that it's not worth talking about.

    WATCH THIS SPACE.

RADM Grace Hopper, badass computer tech lady
    Wikipedia wrote:
A pioneer in the field, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, and developed the first compiler for a computer programming language. She conceptualized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages. She is credited with popularizing the term "debugging" for fixing computer glitches (motivated by an actual moth removed from the computer, and not by her). Due to the breadth of her accomplishments and her naval rank, she is sometimes referred to as "Amazing Grace." The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Hopper (DDG-70) is named for her, as was the Cray XE6 "Hopper" supercomputer at NERSC

Princess Leia, while at first a damsel in distress, turns the tables on the guys and rescues them! So I'd add her in there.

Yessss, Leslie Knope is a great feminist character. Parks and Recreation is such a fantastic show.

in fact most of the women in the HP books are awesome as fuck (slightly less so in the movies)

I don't really know much about her, but Tina Fey seems like a pretty good female role model.

The character of Myka Bering from Warehouse 13 would qualify, I think.

I almost said Starbuck from the new BSG, but while she's a good strong female character, I don't think she'd be a good role model.

Leslie Knope and Ellen Ripley have already been said, but they definitely qualify

Katniss Everheart is tough, capable, compassionate and has enough depth to feel like a real person. I'd say she counts.

i would say gilmore girls is a great show to watch for young girls, but the last season was just so blah

amy sherman-palladino actually has a new show on abc family that premiered this week, bunheads, about a vegas showgirl that starts teaching ballet and the main character is basically a version of lorelai that can dance and the pilot episode is most excellent and shows great promise!

    What Lara Croft controversy?

And I was pretty tickled when I found out Vasquez was actually played by a Jewish lady, who also played the stepmom in Terminator 2.
