And it got me thinking about how women are perceived and portrayed, especially in light of the recent Lara Croft controversy.
What real people or fictional characters would you guys consider to be positive female role models? What kinds of women should we be hoping our children, girls and boys, will emulate and respect?
Ladies that I think are pretty rad include:
Ellen Ripley, lieutenant, alien-cruncher
Jenette Vasquez, PFC, smart gun operator and wisecracking badass
Boudica, queen of the British Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the Romans
Khutulun, Mongol warrior princess
Queen Elizabeth I, the "virgin" queen hahaha sure
Let us talk about women who are awesome and why. We can also discuss negative stuff if you really want, but I'd rather accentuate the positive because I am feeling chipper today.
Edit: this should probably go without saying but let me say anyway, NOT A RANGER THREAD, DON'T GO THERE, DUMMIES.

She's a great, strong character, who is no more eccentric than any other character on Parks and Recreation.
One of the reasons I'm a big fan of the show is that they avoid succumbing to ridiculous stereotypes. It also has the only example of a libertarian that I didn't hate, but which is so far removed from any example of real libertarians that it's not worth talking about.

also the movie with emma roberts was surprisingly decent
that shot where she picks up the stick and starts running with it is extremely well-done
in fact most of the women in the HP books are awesome as fuck (slightly less so in the movies)
but my favorite is definitely Luna Lovegood
The character of Myka Bering from Warehouse 13 would qualify, I think.
Katniss Everheart is tough, capable, compassionate and has enough depth to feel like a real person. I'd say she counts.
I did this too

amy sherman-palladino actually has a new show on abc family that premiered this week, bunheads, about a vegas showgirl that starts teaching ballet and the main character is basically a version of lorelai that can dance and the pilot episode is most excellent and shows great promise!
Captain Janeway. She's the Captain of a spaceship. 'nuff said.
Katniss Everdeen kicks some arse.
I am no man! Come at me, bro.
Princess Mononoke also kicks some arse.
Katara and Toph are pretty good too.
And I was pretty tickled when I found out Vasquez was actually played by a Jewish lady, who also played the stepmom in Terminator 2.
the most recent trailer shows her getting captured and tied up and a guy is pretty clearly about to sexually assault her

I'm a fan of Quorra from Tron Legacy, besides the many characters already mentioned that I also enjoy. Smart, friendly, and tough.
