So my neighbor's roommate is black and wishes she was Asian

I was visiting, and somehow it came up that she's "very into everything Japanese" and she said she wishes she was Asian. It's clear that all she knows about Japan, and Asians in general, is what she's seen in anime.
It was basically a conversation killer. Help me understand this.

    Wishing you were someone else based on almost nothing knows no racial limits. People wish they were different all the time.
