Yeah, but I don't think that kind of future is tenable. If you have a mega-large corporation handling, let's say, 80-90% of the video game market, people would probably stop buying games after a while, causing a crash. Then some years later, the industry can rise up and dust itself off again. I think the only way that doesn't happen is if people don't want to play games anymore, or indie devs stop creating them. I don't really think the future of gaming will turn out that way. And I'm not saying that's what is being advocated by anyone here, just that I don't think there's too much to worry about.
Now, auto-correcting the media companies, that's a bigger fish....

I think the major reason I don't think this idea is a big concern is because I am not actually generalising this when I think about it. I am taking this specific example, activision, a company known for doing exactly what is claimed will be a consequence of further monopoly already, being bought out by a bigger company who will...proceed to make no changes at all.
I am sanguine about this idea, because activision do not need to be saved and they cannot be made worse. Warner Bros as a game maker are significantly better than Activision at spreading out and making more types of games with more interesting mechanics. The net result would be better all round in this one isolated case.
Now if it was something like, say, Valve being bought out, that would be different.
But it is not.
Generalisations are not very useful for analyzing specific cases.
Which is why I disagree that a knee jerk gut feeling of "No bad" applies. It really doesn't to this one. It wouldn't matter at all.

Except you are ignoring that Activision's actions, which you yourself dislike, are contained to Activision itself. The issue with conglomeration is that it takes these shitty practices and begins extending them to the entire industry.
oh man. A buyout on THQ could have someone stand to make some fucking bank.
is that why you were talking about buyouts and stuff?
I think THQ just went south because they greatly overestimated some stupid drawing game (hmmm sounds familiar...). If the buyer just kept on pumping out Saint's Row and similar titles that work, they could turn THQ around.

don't forget homefront, it was billed as their biggest game yet. don't forget they hold rights to make games for warhammer and WWE. i am sure most of these games are not selling.

I was assuming that a company buying out another in this situation would ignore the strategies of the previous company on the assumption that they failed so badly with them that they got taken over.
So yes, I am ignoring it, because it doesn't make sense to me.

So one of Destructoid's writers asks Felicia Day over twitter what she has contributed to the gaming culture, or if she is really just a glorified booth babe.
White Knights pour out of the woodwork (Wil Wheaton included).
Destructoid fires him.
oh and David Jaffe gets involved too.
...Granted the guy probably could have been a bit more... tactful about it, but the guy DOES have a point, and it isn't really helped when a bunch of guys start defending her like that.

Well, you know, I hear The Guild created by her is something that's more contribution than most people in "gaming culture" (god what a stupid phrase). But sure, she's just a glorified booth babe. :rotate:

Yeah uh, I don't care one way or the other for Felicia Day. Whatever. She sure is popular for reasons unknown to me.

The tweet was rude and something he should have just kept to himself, but pretty much this.
I mean I'm a little annoyed that she's popping up everywhere on tv as I don't think she's a particular good actress but regarding gaming I can mostly just ignore her.

He certainly could have been nicer about it, but I see the point he was aiming for. Instead of firing him outright though, maybe they should have coaxed him into issuing an apology. Instead, they've given him all the room with no consequences to continue on it if he chooses to.
So, guy asked her something rudely. He was wrong. Whether that was the goal or not...
Destructoid fires him as a response. They are wrong. Super draconian, white-knighty response. And then...
Delusional nerds are among the defense of her on Twitter, not that she NEEDS it in the first place, and there's probably instances of mouth breathing creepiness.
Ultimately... every facet of this is dumb.

Hmmm...yeah. Seems to me that he could have kept it too himself.
It was tactless, not sure if he deserved to get fired for it, but at the same time I really don't see a point in going after her in the first place.
I mean honestly I've only heard of her from some web shows or something seems like a weird thing to go after.
Destructoid fires him as a response. They are wrong. Super draconian, white-knighty response.
You don't seem to understand how this works. Also, "white knight" makes you kook like an idiot, so I suggest you and everyone else stop using it. You're not even using it correctly.
She is basically a mediocre at best, moderately attractive actress who is a "Gamer" and managed to get a bunch of guys fawning over her because of "OMG A GIRL GAMER!" She got put in DA2 because of that.
So yeah... if her contribution is further setting back the stereotype that being a "gamer nerd girl" will get guys to do whatever you want and defend you at the drop of a hat, then yeah she has contributed a TON.

And which point was he aiming for?
That it's okay to go around making baseless accusations to prominent figures in the industry?
That it's okay to compare a woman who has put significant creative contribution to the industry with mere eye candy?
That he shouldn't post on twitter if he's "drunk" (as he claims)? That he should know how twitter works (because he claims he doesn't) before posting?
I seem to be missing what his "point" was besides being an overall douchebag. Care to enlighten me?

I'm sorry but when it comes to celebrity on any level, people will take jabs at you over the internet - a tool that gives anyone a voice, be it genuinely spoken or trolling / insult-comicy. Frankly, I have trouble giving a shit that someone had something rude said to them over the internet. If this was a face-to-face encounter, and worse, a professional setting such as an interview, then I could understand the anger with this guy completely. So while it may have been mean-spirited, it also ultimately means nothing.
Also, diminishing a person's accomplishments is a pretty shitty thing to do. Yeah, no doubt some people dig her cause she's attractive, but this applies to pretty much EVERY PERSON KNOWN FOR ACTING.
He certainly could have been nicer about it, but I see the point he was aiming for. Instead of firing him outright though, maybe they should have coaxed him into issuing an apology. Instead, they've given him all the room with no consequences to continue on it if he chooses to.

Agreed.
I do think Destructoid over reacted big time. Not saying the guy was in the right either though as he certainly could have asked the question with more tact (or simply not at all).
I've seen Journalists from the Washington Post or New York Times insult (and I mean straight up insult) famous people and politicians. Do they get fired? Unless what they said was competely racist, then normally no they do not. At the worst they issue an apology, at the best (depending on the paper and the person insulted) they might get promoted :P.
I like Felicia Day, I love The Guild. I got nothing against her and think she is a pretty nice and talented person, but (IMHO) the only thing I think she has really contributed to "gaming culture" (groan) is giving hope to the multitude of mouth-breathers out there that one day they might find themselves a cute girl who plays games.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
I hate to do this, but it's best to end this discussion now because I am going to bed and I have a feeling that someone Heisenberg will hop in and take this topic in a stupid direction. It's also very much a non-event with little relevance to the greater industry.
You can all discuss it for a bit longer if you must, but the subject best be dropped when I come back in however many hours.

It sounds like he's of the position that most people dig her for shallow reasons.
Here's the important part... who cares if that's his opinion of her and her success? The level of criticism does apply - she is a TV star, so looking good is part of her job (we can debate that it shouldn't work that way, because I agree it shouldn't, but really anyone who says "You don't have to look good to be a star" is kidding themselves, there are few exceptions; not saying I agree with that, but it IS how it works, don't hate me for pointing it out). These kinds of comments happen regularly from all sorts of people. And they come from people in more substantial positions than this guy held. He's a writer for a video game website - who cares.

Yeah. That was kind of what I was getting at. I really don't see why this become a thing as far as either side goes.
I mean it would be like me just for some random reason calling out...I don't know some random reality TV star who I don't care about.
I don't think it should have balloned the way it did but at the same time I don't see a point to it in the first place.

singling her out for it seems unfair.
The 'singling her out' thing seems like an odd thing to claim. How many other TV show actors are there that are in the same position as her? Because it doesn't seem like there's a huge pool of people to work with there.
