Having just seen the previews for "LittlebigPlanet" and "Home", I have to say, colour me intrigued. I'd almost go as far to say that with a couple new awesome games announced, a purchase would be not such an unlikely proposition.
That said, I still think I'll wait a while before seriously considering picking one up.
EDIT: Discuss your views on the PS3 and it's newfound maybe goodness.
The Home thing looks pretty neat. I don't know why but I am irresistably attracted to customizable online living space. I used to have endless fun decking out my house in SW:G, years ago. It won't sell me a system (only a robust library of exclusives could do that) but it certainly sets me off in the right direction.
I'm constantly amazed at how Sony can do literally everything wrong for a year, insult everybody, and generally act as shitheads as they rape customers to help them fund their costly but ridiculous format war, and in one day, they show a non-interactive video and play a bit of their new game, and eveyon's talking about how great Sony is and how it's the second coming of Christ.
It makes me think that people in general are still just monkeys, impressed at the shiny but as-of-right-now completely unproven bone Sony's tossed us.
Geez, C-3P0 was right. I am bitter.
It's okay. I'll buy you a slice of pizza at PAX. We'll chat. Times are good
Man did you see those pancake stackers? They had CINNAMON on them!! OH AND STRAWBERRY WAFFLES!!! Just tell me where to sign the check, and I'm totally buying my own IHOP.
To attempt to salvage the thread, since a lot of people have talked about it: What is your criteria for officially deciding "Okay, I'm going to buy Console X"?
Personally, I've always taken the plunge when I can match the console's price with the total price of games that I consider must-haves. Thus, $130 worth of DS games, $160 worth of PSP games (what I paid for the system), $250 worth of Wii games, etc. This obviously skews against higher-priced systems, but I am a total cheap-ass.
Other people base it off of numbers of exclusive games. I've seen a lot of people cite 5 games as kind of the cut-off point.

Well, for me, the cutoff point on the PSP was when a Metal Gear Solid game came out for it...though I probably wouldn't have if there were no other games I wanted.
I don't put a lot of thought into buying consoles, I just do it - preferably ~1 year after release so there are some games to play.
I don't have that kind of patience or restraint. :P I wasn't going to buy a Playstation 3 at all, but then I went into Target for something and saw a whole stack of them... just sitting there... lonely. I had a poodle of extra money and, blast it, I bought one. Granted, I'm more than happy with it, especially with the Home and LBP announcements. And there is a good line-up for it, so I will have things to play. Lair and Heavenly Sword are coming out soon, and I'll be getting those day one.

If it's a major console that is guaranteed to have good games, then I'm going to buy it.
So do you pretty much snag it right at launch and enjoy stuff as it comes down the pipe? Also, "guaranteed" means announced, I assume? I'm just curious what goes into people's decisions.

I'm the same way -- it's not really a "killer app" situation so much as an aggregate of "games I wouldn't mind playing." I think that people who buy a console specifically for one game end up getting burned in the long run.

I must be the only gamer alive who has a hard time talking myself into springing for a new console - any new console. They costs hundreds of dollars...or I could just buy whatever last-gen machine I don't have already for whatever spare change I find in my couch. I don't have enough time that I'll be able to play all the good games for even one machine, so there are always enough games on whatever system to fill my gaming time. And it's hard to justify spending $600 (or $400 or even $250) when I could buy a GC or Xbox for like $40 with a few games.
Often (as in, almost always), I buy a system once it's replacement is out and I can get it with multiple titles for the cost of a single brand new game.
To actually contribute, I'd say that I would buy a new console based on the features and abilities it has. Any console is going to have some killer games (the 3DO had some really good games), but the abilities of the console as well are a huge selling point for me.
Stuff like the Bxox's custom soundtracks and built in HDD, the 360's focus on Live and downloadable trailers and demos, the PS2's BC, the Dreamcast's awesome game lineup and online play/web browsing, the Wii's Virtual Console (even though it's a ripoff), the PSP's media functions, pretty screen, and wireless web browsing, and the PS3 having pretty much all of that stuff.
And then there is Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, and Virtua Fighter to follow.

I just view it as inevitable that I'm going to have to purchase a given console at some point during it's lifespan. Every generation thus far I've found enough titles on each platform worth justifying the price of admission - but then again I tend to stick with the knowns (sony, nintendo, etc) and not the crazy hardware (cdi, phantom, jaguary), so that might account for my relative lack of dissapointment.
little big planet and GT5 has me very very intrigued. I want to buy it, but I know better then to spend $600 I don't have. I'll just pretend wii gives me all the games I need.

Also, it's is a contraction for it is. Grrr! English monster angry!

My rule is usually 5 exclusives that I want to play, but there have been exceptions to that rule. I picked up an Xbox for $130 knowing that at the time I only wanted KotOR, KotOR II, and Jade Empire. I then picked up some more games, but at $130, three games was enough for me to justify the purchase.
I'm looking at a 360 now, and I can only think of exclusive disc-based games that I want (Kameo and Viva Pinata), but Live Arcade is appealing enough to make up for it.
I think if I haven't picked one up when it launches, FFXIII will probably be enough for me to buy a PS3. I'll still wait for a price drop though.
to be honest, it got me really excited. To me it feels like the first real beginning towards a metaverse- it has a quality environment with tangible ties to the real world; it looks like it's missing the freedom of expression that something like second life has though.
Definitely very interesting to see what sony does to expand this service later on, and what nintendo and microsoft will do to match it in the next generation of consoles.

I'm not buying a PS3 until the price tag is $200 or less.
I have a feeling I am going to be waiting quite a while.

The thing that felt slightly iffy about home was the liberal dropped hints of buying extra content, although you can't really complain since the base package is free. Of course it helps that it probably won't end up furryfied like a certain other online world.
As for the response, I don't see why it has to wait for the next gen of consoles. Nintendo obviously has a lot of potential for this kind of interacticity if they bring products like Nintendogs or Animal Crossing to the Wii. And microsoft is certainly trying to make a thing out of the X360/PC crossplay so it wouldn't be a massive leap to see something of the social networking from the PC gradually creep onto the xbox

I get every major console as soon as I can and enjoy whatever games there are around launch. I enjoy every genre (save for realistic sports games) so I typically don't have a problem finding games to play.
As for "guaranteed to have good games", I don't really mean announced games. Based on the history of brands such as Playstation and Nintendo, I know that down the line those consoles will deliver games that I want to play. Sony has been the market leader for the past two generations and I've been playing amazing games on my Sony consoles for the past decade. There's absolutely no reason to believe that there will not be enough quality PS3 games to seal my purchase.
Home is cool, but doesn't really do anything for me personally. I do, however, want to play Motorstorm, Resistance, Little Big Planet, Heavenly Sword, maybe Lair, Team ICO's next game, Uncharted, and probably a couple others I forgot. I'll buy one when it's like $3-400 for the version I want.
Sony did really well at this GDC, I don't care about home, but LBP made me want.
I see the PS3 as viable now. Just need a few more decent looking games. And a price drop would be handy, since right now my mind is all "hmm... a PS3, or 10 full price 360 games..." and the games still win.

Maybe I will get a PS3 in a couple years, when there are more games I want and the price is down.
Did I just sum up the majority of posts about the PS3? The ones that aren't retarded memes, anyway?

Even in light of the recent announcements my urge to buy in nil. Maybe in a year or two when there are better games out.

The not-sucky promotion helps. Sony, remember, in the future- less creepiness, more pleasant voiceovers by English women.
