How far along is this game in development? Have they actually started making it yet or are they still designing it and brain storming ideas?

Probably going to be a late 2008 to 2009 title.

I like the concept art a lot. I bet this is going to be in 2D. :)

You know, it really sounds like they are trying to reinvent the "Sim" series.

And not reinvent in the sense that they want to make it different, but reinvent in the sense that they want to build the exactsame thing, but from scratch.

    o rly?
Wada revealed that his inspiration for Project O originally came from a Doraemon toy set. Similar to the "secret tools" that appear in the popular children's animation series, Wada imagined a tool that allows players to create a world, give it life, and observe the subsequent happenings. He likens this to the game Sim Earth. But in addition to a distant view of the world, he wanted to let players experience the world from the first person perspective of one of its residents. He likens this to Sim People.

Project O started with the idea of being a combination of Sim People and Sim Earth. But it's since become something a bit different, thanks to the influences Kimura took from Norikazu Yasunagano, who created World Neverland for the PlayStation back in 1997. That title was a "life simulation," where players could experience the relationships between artificial intelligence driven characters.

I said "Sim series" not "Sims series" but, even so, it looks like you deal with day to day interaction between individuals, which is what at least the original "Sims" (only one I've played) was.

Some one on the last page compared it to Spore, and I think it's most apt. Where as Spore kind of takes things on the route of creating an entire civilization from nothing, this game looks like you start off with a relatively small neighborhood, and overtime grow it into a large town, with lots of different interactions, and such. Kind of a fusion of The Sims, SimCity, and SimEarth.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, just an observation.

Scans from Famitsu with screenshots a-plenty, spoilered for h-scroll

Other than the king in the first shot, I think it looks pretty good. Looks like there's some depth of field there, and the art is great.

It is called Depth of Field.

And yes, that games concept screeny does look like sex.
Which reminds me that if Animal Crossing Wii isn't twice as large with cities and a much larger online option, I will kill myself. Seriously, I hope it isn't just a rehash of the 64/GC/DS versions. That would suck...

(but I would still buy it)

Ok, the dragon and the giant frogs and so on are really kinda cool.

I'm just worried this will turn out to be just some fancier version of the Settlers, or Harvest Moon. City-building alone doesn't really do it for me.
