The Newsroom is a show on HBO written by a man named Aaron Sorkin. People talk in it, that's how you know.
HBO has wisely decided to put the first episode in its entirety on the YouTube in order to get you to give a shit about it. Everyone says it sucks but I think it is neat. Also it is an opportunity to stare at Emily Mortimer for a while. Here, watch the episode:
Moneyball wasn't his best, but when he hits he knocks it out of the park! Social Network, Sports Night, West Wing, some of Studio 60, A FEW GOOD MENNNN
Let us discuss the deep irony of this review appearing in the New Yorker
"It's smart but not smart enough, oh hey look I've seen four episodes look at me look! look! I review TV shows!, too many white people, and oh god they're all liberals. Also here is a paragraph about Veep for some reason."

here is what a guy at my local indie weekly has said about this show:
this seems to be the tipping point for aaron sorkin. i am seeing so many articles with the premise "this kind of sucks and hey when you think about it all his shows are kind of same-y in this stupid yearning for a make believe bygone america and also he's a bit of a sexist."

West Wing was so good, though
Until he left, then it stopped being charming and became super serious all the time
i didn't think studio 60 was as bad as most people did, despite its tendency to be didactic (except for the whole nevada two-parter which was hot garbage not just for the brother in iraq bit but also for the tired 'small town judge' character)
I think aaron sorkin is a dude well suited to adapting material that should be incredibly dry (the social network, moneyball) and maybe when he's left unfiltered, he kind of...loses it

The only opinion I've read on it is the only one I need to read (also my own opinion, having seen it, was that it looks good).
Dan Rather thinks its great. His review is up on Gawker.
So is that monologue indicative of the message of the show? Because I can get behind the theme of America is emphatically not that great, but then it devolves into blaming young people for being "The Worst Generation" and talking about how the US used to be a utopia and I can't decide whether I want to claw my own eyes out or those of Aaron Sorkin.
I don't understand the whole argument about how we as a country were at the top and somehow no longer. He spouts the statistics of where we place in math, science, etc. Yet I don't recall America ever being number 1 at any of those things.

Well all those things were true and it sucks but
How could any of those problems be attributed to the generation of kids?
Like, I am correct in thinking that he was referring to the 80s-90's generation of kids?
The ones who have not had any chance to effect any change in the economy, education system, or any of the other things he listed?
And the other thing
about how the world was so great before
You know
The 50s
when things were so fucking great for everybody
and even before then
yeah
we were a great goddamn country back then, full of strong, white men

There is also some large-room walking and some restaurant sitting which, you know, keeps it fresh
I like my boss.

Going to watch this now, will probably love it.
Oh man that's good, I'm stealing that.
studio 60 was fucking terrible though
I didn't say I didn't love it, but Social Network was just such a powerhouse.
And the pilot of Studio 60 is great!

sports night sux though
and this has been a summary of my opinions of aaron sorkin series
The first season at any rate
West Wing has some head-shakey bits in it, and some bits that seriously date it (who remembers Rock the Vote? that was sure successful)
But man, there's an arc with a secret service agent that's really good, and it's generally really funny and can be quite affecting, sometimes
Also CJ rules. And Dule Hill is in it!

GoFund The Portland Trans Pride March, or Show It To People, or Else!
That's because it has Mark Harmon, the greatest actor who ever lived.
Good on ya Goose!
i thought the show was good too *high five*
but the internet consensus seems to be sliding toward "bad"
apparently the ratings were good despite the bad reviews:

i guess we'll see how the next few episdoes go
Yell at them
because I was talking about it with Fire truck and I agree with him that the second half of it is infuriating bullshit

Like, this doesn't look like it was shot in reality. In reality people scream and yell and shit when you say stuff like this
yes
he would have been boo'd off the stage before he got to his list
