I bought a used PS2 about a week ago, couldn't be happier. I've been playing Ratchet and Clank, Xenosaga, and Guitar Hero II with no problems except a slightly noisy disc drive.
Shadow of the Colossus arrives in the mail today from Gamefly, something I've been eagerly waiting to play. Game loads up to the title screen, I hit new game. Short loading screen, then the in-game intro movie starts. I'm not going to spoiler this shit because it's the intro movie and doesn't reveal anything earth shattering.
He goes down the stairs on the horse, gets to the alter, puts the body on the alter, and then it goes to that mask which is slowly getting closer to the screen and talking about bring her back from the dead.
Then it freezes.
It's worth mentioning that since getting off the horse the same 7 seconds of audio is playing in the background, abruptly stopping, and starting again. I don't think this is intentional.
I load up the game again, start a new game, and hit the Start button to skip the movie, I am then met by a loading screen which never goes away. I called up the store, talk to the manager, and he tells me that because I signed the receipt it wouldn't have mattered if it exploded once I got it home. They won't exchange it or give me my money back.
What now?

If not, man, no idea. What condition is the disc in? Have you tried any other "high stress" games for the PS2?
That's great.
edit:
And the disc has some light scratches but nothing that should impede gameplay. It crashes at the EXACT same place though which leads me to think it is a disc problem, might try boiling it which has been successful for me with xbox games that were scratched. Or toothpaste, rub it in, wash it out. Once again, the scratches are very very light though so this shouldn't be the issue. Might be the laser lens that's dirty, perhaps I'll crack her open and clean it myself...since there's no point in preserving a warranty of any kind.
I'm thinking since it crashes in the exact same place every time this is a disc issue and not a PS2 issue. Does that make sense to anyone else? I don't have another PS2 to test it on so I'm probably just gonna send it back to Gamefly and try another one.
Yes is does make sense. I doubt it would freeze at the exact same time if it was your PS2... that just makes no sense.
Game is from Gamefly, used PS2 is from used game store.
