So, I must be a strange guy. stranger than other internet strange guys because I do not understand why we don't see any Spaceship building games!!!
I mean, sure we see plenty of 4x games where you upgrade components on your ship, or "research" (cough, unlock) ship designs, but nothing where you can actually build something, something that works?
And sorry, minecraft doesn't cut it.
It looks pretty epic sure, but it's hollow and makes me.... bitter!
So, can someone help a brutha out? Am I missing someting in the last decade of gaming that could possibly satisfy my space-architect cravings? Am I the only one in the world who cares and cries about this?!?!

You clearly haven't been paying attention to what @Halkun has been doing with that Enterprise.
I wasn't aware of the enterprise work, but still. it's making an elaborately detailed immaculate representation... but it's "just" a model. If i could throw that in a simulation... sign me up! i'd build a ship brick-by-brick too, if i could actually flip on my deflectors and fire some torpedos! However I'll do some searchin because i'm interested in a voyeuristic way.
For Kerbal, I tried the demo, and it's pretty good, but I'd call it "A physically accurate rocketry simulation". If it can evolve to building the Battleship Yamatto complete with Wave Motion Gun, that'd be rocking too, but seems unlikely!
There are some other games somewhat based on Minecraft about building spaceships (Blockade Runner comes to mind, there's another one that I can't remember), but I can't really think of many games where building a ship was the primary thing, and playing with it was secondary.

Hazeron lets you harvest the resources, design the layout, put it together, climb in, turn on the deflectors, warp hither and thither, blow up things, then land on a planet and get out and harvest some more resources.
Gratuitous Space Battles maybe? The entire game is designing ships, designing fleets with those ships, then testing them in glorious/gratuitous combat against pre-made scenarios. And it has "multiplayer," in that you can post your fleets for others to battle against.
hey! @MechMantis and @Dyvion both of those look promising!!! I am not alone!! I have never seen either of these before, amazing! I just hope their usability is better than their graphics.
I think a game like Battleships Forever is what I'm looking for. Hazeron looks more like a CAD program.
Here's the Hazeron Trailer. Check 1:20 for what I mean hazeron.com/trailer.html
@MegaMek: Gratuitous Space Battles is pretty good, and I do dig it, but it's all about min/max selection of equipment, nothing around actually "building" a new battleship or the such. Maybe it's too much of a balancing problem for the game designers?
And that brings me to one of my original questions, am I alone in this unsated craving to be a human shipyard?
Spacebuild is an addon to Garry's Mod, a modification for Half Life 2. Garry's Mod also has oodles of other addons that can be found in the Steam Workshop if you get the Gmod 13 beta, the in-game toybox, or here: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/
I don't play Spacebuild online, so I won't really address that in my comments. Here are some videos of what you can do in Spacebuild:
My mode of play is to create a bunch of spacestations, populate them with NPCs, then systematically destroy each one! There's no story or specific objective in this; just spaceship building and destruction. If you're interested, I can writeup how to download everything and detail all the addons it needs and the ones I have to make it better.
Just to let you know. That video was the inital import of the ship and it's over a year and a half old. He now have several ships in shipyards (link in sig) and we we are hoping beyond hope what when Notch is done with his ship building game, we will be able to import what we have created.
You are not alone, I signed up just to tell you. Yes, I also crave a good ship building simulator, and I can't seem to find any good one. As long as I can either pilot it after in combat, or at least build a functioning fleet for glorious space battle with some meaning (not gratuitous), I would be happy. Sadly it seems like a wild goose chase. Last mildly good I remember was Galactic Civilizations, but the ship building part was little more than basic.
If you want to go oooooooooold school, there's EOS (Earth Orbit Stations). But good luck finding it. Its from the halcyon days when 4.77MHz was the way to go. And it has exactly 0 AI, so everything past the first two scenarios is not fun unless you're playing multi.
I, like TigusVidiks, signed up just to tell you that youre not alone. I yearn for something like you ask. I know this thread is old, but no one mentioned some of my favorites and you must hear my tale.

Design and pilot your own ship to shoot others out of the sky. Manage repairs, target systems (energy, weapons, defense, special, engines, control). Has campaign and skirmish. Might need DosBox at this point. The original shipbuilder to me.

A new one that is incredibly fun; launched from Kickstarter I believe. Roguelike (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roguelike) where each mission is short but challenging with lots to unlock. Many different paths and ships available.
Last but hopefully not least my favorite, Space Rangers 2: http://goty.gamespy.com/2006/pc/index8.html
Possibly one of the must fun, unique and creative games ever made. Choose a race, build a ship, and win with it. I am narrow minded so i always built a warship and blew the badguys (dominators) out of the sky, but i think there is a coalition and economic victory as well. Extensive minigames include: RTS style planet missions where you can choose to (or not) FPS an individual robot you designed and mass produced to wrest control from the evil robots, text based puzzle games, bounty missions, and good old fashioned buy-low in one sector and sell-high in another. Commit war crimes against another race? Get escorted by the police to one of their planets and play a jail mini game to snitch for the warden to get out early or become a famous boxer to get a pardon... and more! Im sure i havent scratched the surface of all that is possible in this game. If you havent played, you are surely missing out.
Anyway, im always on the watch for a solid space game. You stay classy, PA!

I would recommend you all try out Kinetic Void on steam, its very early on but already has one of the most detailed and most scaled ship builders i have ever seen allowing you to create anything from single person fighters to city sized stations that literally (and i do mean literally) will fly through other ships without even noticing them. In my eyes the level of detail is truly fantastic and when the game is finished its going to be a one of a kind

Here's a slice from Deck 10.
Also, as for spaceship building, Kerbal Space Program is literally just that.

Gimbal is pretty fun.

Although technically you are building upper atmosphere ships, not space ships.
I have found a game called shellcore command, in it you buy different parts from the traders and place them on your ship in any spot. http://www.kongregate.com/games/flashbacker/shellcore-command-ep1-final
