Gmail almost screwed me hardcore

When I use the "star" feature in gmail it will sometimes delete the e-mail forever, instead of marking it as highly important. I suspected this for awhile since I had an e-ticket from Southwest, marked it with a star so I could find it easily the next day and then two hours before my flight it was FUCKING GONE. Not in the trash, spam, or any other folder. I marked that up to something I did after trying to find the e-mail in my other accounts.

However, not more than one minute ago I marked an e-mail from my scholarship coordinator with an important deadline in it...vanished. WTF? These are my important e-mails, a quick google searching didn't show this to be a widespread problem. Is it just me, some kind of a beta program where they are fucking with me to see what I have to do? I'm fully expecting someone to point out a really simple point I'm missing and this turning out to be all my fault. In that case, enjoy flaming me.

I'm using firefox before anybody asks.

Yes, I'm sure you're part of some super secret beta program and they're totally just fucking with you and giggling at Gmail HQ.

If the star feature caused you to lose an important email before, why would you use it again on another important email?

You probably set a parameter saying that if you star an email, you want it deleted. I think it's under labels or something.

I wasn't sure it was the star feature. I can be absent-minded sometimes.

I don't think this is the problem. I have other e-mails with a star next to them sitting in my inbox.

Fucking use the POP3, people. It doesn't cost any extra money or anything, and your e-mail will stay on Google's servers in addition to being downloaded to your hard drive.

The thing about free services is that you don't have a lot to complain about. Use your ISP email if it's that important or get your own domain/hosting.

Maybe I'm doing the POP3 wrong? When I set it up it put every single mail I'd ever archived in my inbox and I lost the ability to label or 1-click archive. It was not a fun experience.

Gmail is really iffy. I've stopped trusting it since it started randomly not receiving emails that I send (well maybe not randomly, it only seems to reject the larger emails, like 1-2megs), so I don't send important stuff (team projects, lab reports, etc.) to gmail accounts anymore.

I much prefer the Gmail web client to any pop3 client program I've seen.

I've never had this kind of problem at all, though I have experienced "missing" emails and massive (8-12 hour) delays in receiving emails.

Trust me, Gmail is good. I use the star feature all the time and it is great. It is a Godsend even. I can find all my important e-mails very quickly without having my inbox cluttered. I just archive everything I get and star important shit. Plus the whole system is just so fucking streamlined.

This problem that the OP is having is rare like he mentioned and it's highly doubtful that you'll have the same problem.

As for the problem, no idea man.

I also must give a thumbs up to gmail. I forward my school email account to my gmail and haven't had a single problem -- no delays, no lost emails. To be fair, I don't use the star system; why would you need to when you can just google search your entire inbox? I prefer it to any web-based or POP3 program yet.

Before any of you bitch about Gmail I want you to spend 18 months being forced to use Lotus Notes on a daily basis, and you need to rely on it to perform vital job functions.

I've tried developing stuff in Notes.

    Oh, I can imagine.

I used to swear by Thunderbird, but now the whole "stick emails in different folders" seems horribly primitive. I'm a big fan of folksonomy.

I developed e-mail automation scripts ("agents" in Notesspeak) and configured Access to provide reports on mailbox usage using the NotesSQL ODBC driver. There is not a single facet of Lotus Notes that does not fill me with revulsion.

On my Mac I just use Mail. It's good enough, and it's light weight and fast. On my PC I used Thunderbird for ages but now I'm too damned lazy and just use webmail.

I use Gmail with Apple Mail downloading everything for a backup. Works well, and keeps my important stuff on my HD in case I'm offline for some reason.

I've been using gmail since september of '04 when a buddy invited me. I've never looked back since. I've never had a single problem with it. Desktop clients just feel so awkward to me anymore.

I use Apple Mail, but I find it locks up for like 30 seconds sometimes when I go to reply or forward a message.
