It's not a part of TF2 I am at all interested in so I am no authority, but they represent the earliest promotional items. The were the first items of a fixed quantity, you can't preorder their games anymore so no new items could be added. That limited quantity gave them value at the time. I agree they're pretty worthless items on their own, but the supply is technically dwindling over time as more people quit the game. Think of it like a dollar, their inherent worth is incredibly low, but they are valued because there is a system built up around the assumption that someone somewhere will want it. As long as there is faith in the earbuds, their price will rise.
Not to mention the people who quit playing before the market was around and never went back because they didn't know their items were worth $$$$
If your inventory isn't private, you'll get random friend requests from people trying to get you to sell/trade those items away. Furthermore, the "market" was around as soon as trading was introduced. Unless the FAQ is wrong, you can only have $200 in your Steam Wallet so sales of high value items are done through eBay or forums & PayPal transactions since it is worth much more than what Valve lets you sell items for.
And for all the items that are really "orphaned" and won't be in circulation, they are probably outnumbered by dupes (which is likely why the value of Max's head has dropped so much).
Rollers are red, chargers are blue....omae wa mou shindeiru
Honestly, I could not care less about the TF2 economy. The question was why was their value so high. I'm guessing the answer isn't because Max's head is a great hat to wear on your characters.
A friend of my brother stopped playing and has his inventory set to only friend can see it. Most of the things are not worth much but he has lots of crates. Most of then worthless, but one. A salvaged crate #30. Apparently it is still worth about 20-25 keys or even higher. Tried to contact him but he hasn't answered yet.
I want to see the other models. That rifle looks classy as hell, but stuff like the Rocket Launcher and Minigun could be horrific gaudy. I hope they somehow keep things consistently cool across the board.
I would like to point out that the hat you get for that is pretty sweet.
ThinkGeek also has a promotion going on through the 23rd - Buy any one item and get another item of equal of lesser value for 50% off using code SMASHIT.

And the supply isn't dwindling...as people quit the game, they can sell or trade those items away. You don't even need TF2 installed to do that.
Also, I am ready for Tufthree
