Don't be afraid to experiment with different weapons combos in those opening Kingsmouth missions; the 4-5 AP's you'll spend per weapon type are embarassingly easy to replace if you want to go with something else.
The 24 hour buddy key is a great idea. It got me to buy the game. I'll be back in once it ships to me. The last thing I did before going to bed was a mushroom gathering quest though, which was definitely reminding me of earlier mmo design (not in a good way ). My pistols/blood build that I was making on my way to the assassin deck was alright but definitely feels a bit lacking. Once I get more of it going it may make more sense.
For what it's worth, he specifically mentions that the monster you evidently need Corrupted for is in a solo instance.
Unless I missed it, you don't need corrupted. I've never had a spec that uses it. Corrupted is probably just one way to deal with the situation.
I can almost guarantee that the quest in question was
"The Haunting"
. I just did it and holy shit. One part of it the enemies have a stacking AoE heal! Unless you can dish out massive damage, I think Corrupted might be the best way to do it. Luckily my default attack does Corrupt, but even then I was just barely staying ahead of the enemies heal rate.
edit- Sometimes you get lucky and the enemies will plop their AoE heal away from where they are fighting.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was it. I died like three times at the end, then said screw it I'm gonna try burning him down before he starts spamming that crap. And I had enough dps to do it. No corruption or anything.
I have a question regarding the stats on talismans. Namely, which ones match your character type. I mean, I get that heal rating is for healers and the protection stats benefit tanks, but what about the rest? As a DPS, am I stacking crit, or crit damage? Does it depend on what weapon(combo) I'm using?

Ya I did that with weaken which just opens them up to more damage. Never had a healing reducing ability. So its nice that situations have different options. Yokai makes it sound like you absolutely have to have corruption, which isnt true.
Yeah for my tanking I use escalation with the frenzy passive that gives me evade stacks coupled with a few other abilities to synergize well with that. (I forget my exact build atm but it basically involved shotgun for pulling and applying weakness and escalation for keeping aggro along with some hate generation passives and other stuff to boost my defenses when I evade or get minor wards)
Shotgun has some alright mitigation passives, like hardcase. Its active skills really have no use for tanking though, chaos/blade and chaos/hammer are pretty much the options for weapons when tanking later on.
But thats when horizontal progression gets deeper anyway. I'm using passives from 4 different weapon types and deep outer wheel stuff. Elite dungeons are pretty flexible for builds... and although nightmare ones are too, they require certain things. Which is what the gatekeeper test is for.
There's one really good shotgun tanking active, actually, the turret that gives a 15% damage reduction, paired with the Support skill's passive, that's a nice nearly permanent 20% damage reduction.
I thought Weaken reduces the damage they do, not the damage they take?
Unless there's a passive somewhere I'm missing that adds a damage taken effect.
There's actually 3 types of Weaken, the Shotgun weaken that reduces damage enemies do, the Chaos weaken that increases damage enemies take, and the Pistol weaken that reduces healing/shield/leech.

Wait....seriously that is the one they are referring to?
You can just move that boss out of the blood field on the ground and it's not a problem at all. The field is stationary and the boss is melee.
Are you sure that's the one that you "need" corrupted for?

Both.
On my chaos/Shotgun build I have one stack of weaken that reduces the damage they do, the other increases the damage they take. Two separate weaken stacks, one is applied via Shotgun, the other is via Chaos.

Weaken actually has 3 different effects depending on what skill put it up.
Some of them reduce effectiveness of barriers/healing up to 50%, some reduce damage dealt by up to 30%, and some increase damage taken by up to 30%. There are also different Hinders and Impairs. Gotta read all the tooltip.
Are you sure that's the one that you "need" corrupted for?
I dunno... I never needed corrupted for anything and I've cleared every zone once now, might have missed a few quests, but never "needed" any single ability. The only thing you really really need to progress well is upgraded talismans. Even tanking nightmare, talisman setup is more important than skill setup as long as you keep aggro. Still need typical stuff like interrupts, purges, cleanse... but you can really go nuts with your build.
Easiest way to put it is just quote the lead Funcom dev:
I guess I'm kinda biased, but I'll throw my 2 cents in here. We have designed a game where the trinity can be broken. However, we don't want to make things too unfamiliar for the player coming from other MMOs. You will see that the items you get are leaning to either damage, healing or damage mitigation. You'll also see that when you sign up for PvP, you choose a uniform which either allowes you to do more damage, absorb more damage, or heal better. However, this is meant to be just a guideline for player who *wants* to jump into these roles. It's familiar, and they know what to do in that role. Nothing is preventing you from mixing and matching gear and abilities.
It was pretty frikkin' interesting to see what different healer, damage and tanking builds people came up with on the beta. You guys are incredibly creative and smart, and you come up with stuff we never even thought of. They found completely new ways of playing the game and solving our encounters - AND WE LOVE THAT! That is exactly what we want you to do, and I encourage all of you to think outside the box when you guys are making your own builds
Apparently there was someone who gave a really bad review for TSW. People on the forums looked him up on Chronicle, realized he hadn't played more than a few hours, and went to town chewing him out.
That is motherfucking priceless, seriously absolutely awesome.
Good news! Bought this after my trial. Character name is Soliloqui since my chat never seems to be working
So i got to a point in the main quest where my handler straight up told me I wasn't ready to go after a certain person of interest. Is that an actual thing or just part of the story?
Ive only not cleared 7 quests (one of which is bugged with the ravens) for the entirety of the zone, but I'd like to not get stomped by progressing.
Unless it either a) sendes you to the next zone or b) has a difficulty of very hard/impossible next to it then you should wait. If not go ahead try it, I mean you would only waste some time.
Btw: the Longer you get in the game the more debuffs/buffs you'll need to change out. I just passed the weaken enemies (luckily that's my main debuff) but when I faced hindred mobs, I couldn't kill them fast enough. Since I haven't spent any ap towards that debuff I am now trying to get it, however It'll be a long time til I can do that mission efficently.
(To explain, unless you give them a certain debuff they have a 50 % damage resistance.)
So how supportive is Elemental actually? I'm downloading the game right now and am thinking about going Fist/Elemental for healing and support does that sound like it would work?

Generally speaking, when a tree says "Support" for its secondary trait, I feel like that tree is more or less the closest to a "pure" DPS skill there is in TSW, since Support tends to mean debuffing enemies and/or buffing yourself and allies, usually to do more damage.
Ok, while waiting for answers to my last questions-
Lots of good info here, but to copy the most pertinent part:
Tanking talismans focus primarily on +HP (Your player's total health pool)
DPS talismans focus primarily on +Attack Rating (damage scaling for your damage-causing actives and passives)
Healing talismans focus primarily on +Heal Rating (heal scaling for your heal-causing actives and passives)
You can mix and match these three primary role stats in any combination from 100% of only one stat type to 90-10, 85-15, 80-20, 75-25, etc. of any two stat types, or even 10-60-30, etc. of all three stat types. For example, to achieve a 10/60/30 mix of Tanking/DPS/Healing, you'd put a single Tanking talismans in one minor slot, two Healing talismans in two of your major slots, and the remaining slots would be filled with DPS talismans.
The beauty of this system is that you can mix these three role stats (HP, damage output, healing output) exactly as you like to suit the role you want to play or to enhance the strengths or bolster the weaknesses of any given 7/7 ability set.

Very intrigued by this game - I'm honestly surprised I haven't heard of it. Think I'll wait for the first big patch though - no rezzing in an MMO doesn't seem like a great idea to me, though I've been known to change my mind. Is it implemented well?

It's a non-issue. Instances are made in such a way that there are respawn points within them, so there's no spawning outside of the instance after you die or whatever.
I hope we can get some mounts in the future. My guy needs a motorcycle.

My shotgun/elemental strike/crit build is finally starting to pick up some key abilities and it's great. I only have one problem right now, and that's that I tend to get a lot more glancing hits than I'd like. My weapon skills are up to date. Could it be my hit rating? Is there any way to see how hit rating is affecting my chance to glance, or an idea of how much I need? I don't see any percentages in the stats tab, just numbers which aren't helpful.
Are you the magic man?

That cannot possibly be the quest in question, especially as Yokai calls it a 'her'. For the boss you're talking about, as Delph mentioned, it's a GTAoE effect, just drag the mobs out.
There was one mob that Delph and I ran into for one of Sarge's quests that could be considered a 'her' and would probably have been susceptible to Corrupted, but they give you an inventory item to fight her to get past that instead, so...
So I am finally starting to get a handle on what I want to do with my blood/shotgun deck, but there is one thing I am curious about. The loading tip says that increasing skill level in a weapon effects damage. Is this just referring to the passive bonus and the ability to equip better weapons? Other than the small passive buffs, is there a reason to go up both lines of the skill paths?
I mostly ask because I originally planned on being a healer, like I am in every MMO, then had a change of heart and decided to go dps to start. However, I have been leveling up the healing path of Blood and only have one point in the damage path. The passive honestly isn't that great (that blood/resource cost hurts too bad at this point), just making sure I am not gimping myself.

I was shotgun/blood starting out before I ended up AR and barrier healing. Made me thing I need to use blood penetration effects to pump up shotgun strikes.
Does anyone have a buddy key they can let go? I've been pretty enveloped in Rift but this sounds like so much more of a challenging and rewarding game.
Yeah I'd like to try it as well. I had a brief chance to play it in the beta and wasn't impressed but I'd like to dig into it a bit more without risking $60 (and frankly spending $60 on a new mmo to see if its good is riskier than throwing my $60 at a table in vegas)
