Well first impressions time. Am definitely feeling the pinch with having an older graphics card (although nothing too dramatic thankfully) and the combat...will take some getting used to, after the click'n'snorefest that was so prevalent in other games.

My gods does the game have atmosphere though. Decided to go Dragon and the vibe I get from the starter zone just absolutely invokes Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines to me. Music is amazing; definitely helps to set the scene.

One gripe though. Jumping. Oh my god jumping! Having just spent 30 minutes trying to get to one lore entry in a hard to reach place in the starter zone for the Dragon, which seemed to involve an awful lot of hitting invisible walls, jumping forward by miles when I was trying to inch forward, and then inching forward when I wanted to jump by miles either 1. I really such at jumping sections or 2. this game needs a much more responsive jumping system.

Other than that minor frustration though, is all good so far. I may even get out of the starter zone at some point but OCD for lore gathering may yet defeat me.

Please tell me the jumping sections get less annoying later on...

Oh yes. I should have trumpeted from the hills that this is the first game I've played since Vampire: Colons to display this level of atmosphere. You can cut it with a knife and chew on it.

But as for jumping. Erm. I dunno about it getting any easier, but at least you'll know you screwed up when you trip a laser mine and die instantly.

Well after a lot of frustrated teeth grinding (and referencing a YouTube video *hangs head in shame*) I finally resolved my jumping issues. Turns out I was apparently jumping in the wrong directions and from the wrong point of the wall for the two bits of lore I was after :rotate:.

This is definitely an amazing game though - just taking my first faltering steps into Kingsmouth but had to call it a night after looking at the clock and realising it was 4am. Oops. There was also a slightly embarrasing moment when I arrived at the lair of the Dragon to discover that I had turned up with the exact same hairstyle as Bong Cha. She didn't seem to notice though so phew, dodged a (literal) bullet there!

Well, that will be something to look forward to then!

Finding it difficult to spend APs as well. Decided to go Assault Rifles for the damage and range aspect, and seeing I had a lot of stuff that seems to trigger if the mob is Hindered. But then can't find a huge number of abilities that actually cause the Hindered state to begin with. Will get there I'm sure - just dealing with that 'new game/new mechanics' fear of screwing something up.

Hindered is one of the BIG STATUS EFFECTS, and is thus only found on Elite abilities in the inner ring, and certain long-cooldown abilities, though not necessarily elites, in the outer rings.

Hindered/Stunned are the big, rare effects, weaken/afflict are the smaller, common ones, while penetrate and crit are something else (basically damage boosting effects).

Ah, that would explain it then. I was noticing an awful lot of weaken/afflict statuses from abilities. Guess I can spend my AP merrily then and focus on weaken/afflict synergies to boost things rather than trying to zero in on Hindered. Thanks for the clarification Kay.

Now I just need to get the patcher to stop throwing a fit (keep getting an Error 105 message) and then wait for the servers to come back up.

Yeah, you'll end up with two abilities that cause Hindered usually, (or Stunned) in an end-game build. The exception to that rule is a certain Shotgun Elite Passive that makes any hit you score within a very short range into a Hindering effect. It's good for soloing, bad for dungeons.

What secondary weapon are you pairing up with Assault Rifle, out of interest? I recall that the starter deck for AR backs it up with Shotgun.

I...er...kind of...well...haven't yet really (see my earlier comment about reluctance to spend APs for fear of new player stupiditude).

Saw the shotgun pairing with that as well from one of the starter decks (think it was the...er...Commando? archetype - I forget the exact name of it) but my experiences in that starter flashback kinda put me off Shotguns. Has more to do with getting used to the combat as well I think - I'm really not used to having mobs run up to me so quickly and start wailing on me as a 'ranged' damager.

I do actually have all of the weapons thanks to the Initiate's Pack deal they appear to be giving to new players. Was toying with Elementalism (more from a character concept I have than anything else) but not really explored it much yet.

Just want the silly game to patch now. Are patch issues (where the launcher appears to do nothing at all and then just go off and sulk) common?

I imagine it'll patch up eventually. Is maintenance done yet?

As far as combat goes, expect to be in melee a lot. Everything's going to run right up into your grill until you get some roots and slows, and even then it'll be crunchy face time more often than not. So mitigation of some sort, be it heals or avoidance are important for soloing, but effectively void when you're in a group with an actual tank.

It seems to be patching now, so yay. Although it is still doing that weird thing where it currently up to 3034/2471 files patched...so yeah, I have invisible data modules it seems

Totally hear you on the melee side of things. I have Kolto Jol....er....I mean that Anima-thingy from basic Assault Rifles, although it seems very mediocre at the moment (am looking out for passive boosters for it). Was actually considering Blood as the second weapon area for things like that shield but all still very much early days.

One thing that does confuse me is this concept of defensive target. I get how when soloing it defaults to you as the defensive target (that really was a bit of a no-brainer once I'd run with Anima-thingy a few times), but how does that work when grouped? Do you specify a defensive target somehow or is it always defaulted to you if its an automatic heal?

When you're grouped up you'll have a set of party bars on the left of your screen. You can click on one, yourself or someone else, and heals that aren't specifically self heals will automagically go to that target. You can press a modifier to heal yourself instead, I think it's alt, without losing your defensive target.

There are two really useful AR heals just out of the first circle that I'm having a good time with. Anima Burst, a builder, and Shot of Anima, a consumer, are both under Squad Duty. They really changed how I felt about the healing from AR. I went from looking for heals from other trees to looking for more damage.

    On Inner-Ring healing:

Heals (and shields) are basically the same as attacks. You have resource builders, and resource consumers. However, the only resource consumer on the inner ring is Angelic Aegis, from Blood Magic. The healing/leech attack in Assault Rifle (I forget the name - Anima Shot? Shot of Anima?) is a resource builder. Nurture in Fist Weapons is a heal with a HoT component, and is a resource builder. Blood Shield from Blood Magic is a barrier/heal power, and a resource builder. Also, healing resource builders will only build resources for that weapon, while attacking resource builders will build them up for both.

This means that the heals in AR and Fist, until you branch into the outer wheels, are effectively auto-attacks - no big burst finisher. So don't feel that AR or Fist are 'lacklustre' and Blood is amazing for healing, as they're all rather effective once you have the bigger powers. In fact, I'm pretty sure that there are some good resource consuming heals in Fist (Surgical Steel) and Assault Rifle (Anima Shot/Shot of Anima - I can never remember which way around the basic consumer and builder go in AR) for 9AP as the first ability in an outer-ring tree.

On defensive targetting - it's just like an offensive target, only it's friendly. So, if you click on an ally (either in the main screen, or their HP bar in your party section), they'll appear as your defensive target, and any heals/buffs will target them. This includes the leech effect of damage/heal Assault Rifle abilities. I just forget where it is on the screen as I've not played in a while. If you don't have a defensive target, it defaults to you. Also, you can clear your defensive target so you get the healing benefits with Escape, I think. Also, the F-keys are party target shortcuts.

Alsoalso, there are some good passive healing powers in the inner rings - I know that Blades has a passive that heals you whenever you penetrate, for example. This is good to slip into a Blood DPS deck (as Blood magic concentrates on Penetrates for damage boosting) geared and tweaked for penetration, as a constant source of passive healing. Active healing's not the only one! I'm a huge fan of Healing Sparks from Fist weapons, which procs a HoT every time you use a Burst type attack.

Yeah, this game lets you have two targets, one offensive and one defensive, and you'll have abilities that attack the offensive target and toss a shield at the defensive target etc.

If there's no defensive target, it auto-selects yourself.

All super useful info (and good to see I'm not the only one that can't remember the bloody name of that first AR healing ability).

In fact, when I read through Kay's info, and all the other stuff, it just makes me fall in love with this game more and more. I think its been said a few times that this is a game that assumes the players have actual brains.

    I think I'm in love...

Yeah, you can pull off some truly wonderful things with synergies in this game. It's possible to make a mostly AR-based deck with some heals and a lot of passive buffs for soloing. You end up with the basic burst builder you find in the AR inner wheel and the passive that goes with it to make it a 4-shot attack rather than 3, Three Round Burst as a solid finisher, Surgical Steel as a Fist healing finisher, and passives that a) improve your chance to hit whenever you use a burst, b) improve your evasion whenever you use a burst, c) proc a heal over time every time you use a burst and d) make your bursts better. And that's just 3 of your active powers, and 5 of your passives. You can still sprinkle 4 more actives and 2 passives in there, including an Elite from each. It's a rather strong solo build.

I use a similar one based on Fist/Chaos so I can have multiple damaging consumers, and slightly higher damage. But I can't initiate combat from range that way.

The mention of the Gangnam style dance points out one of the amazingly lovely things about this game. The Devs treat their players like we're smarter than a sack of hammers, and listen to the feedback we give them. People say they want to repeat investigation missions, the devs make that happen. people say they want to be able to sit in chairs, they make that happen. People want the ability to remove the headgear from deck outfits, the devs make that happen to. PVP isn't working right? Devs tweak it based on feedback, and when the tweaks break it further, they don't put off the players with platitudes, they admit, yeah, that didn't work at all like we intended, and then they fix it. And when the players request more dances, including Gangnam style, it's in an update two months later.

The Devs are actual players, and they listen to their other players. The Lead Dev actually players a Dragon in Battlegroup A (though I believe he's on Leviathan, not Arcadia), and has thrown shoutouts to my guild leader for their Fusang teaming.

The Dragon owns. I recall one of the mission reports suggests they have a sort of long term ambition of seeing the Secret World free of controlling forces such as the Cabals. I suspect they'd enjoy seeing the world in the hands of more regional forces like the Kingdom.
