U.S. Army Special Forces 'Green Beret' combat veteran, Discovery Channel presenter and survivalist Mykel Hawke takes a look at the kind of equipment every Roman legionary was sent to war with over 1,500 years ago. How does it stack up to military standards today?
In this documentary short for Total War: ROME II, Hawke discovers exactly the sort of kit that would have kept the Roman army alive and fighting fit on the front line. From rations and footwear to swords and shields, each individual unit of eight fighting men represented the cutting edge of military might at the time and helped make the Roman Empire the first superpower.

What an incredibly organised, professonal and advanced military. Shame they're going to be Iceni chariotted to death.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Thank you for prepurchasing Total War: Rome II from Green Man Gaming. You are receiving this email because your game will be available for download on 28 Aug 2013 at 00:01 UTC.
I think I might be the only Total War fan on the fence about this, but I guess its because I'm not really interested in the Rome setting compared to the other settings. Is there much in the way of the non-greek/roman factions in the game that can be played?
Also, I think I agree that the exclusion of three factions as pre-order only is a little absurd.

If they follow the Shogun model, the factions will be released eventually. I was able to get the Hattori limited edition DLC a few months after release.

Gallic tribes (French and Iceni in Britain), Germanic tribes, Carthage and Egypt are playable from the get-go.

Yeah, though Romans are obviously one of the big ones, and there are a number of Hellenistic states, there's a wide enough variety to choose from that you can avoid being a Greco-Roman type faction.

I would love an achievement for Egypt if they capture an Iberian region "I'm not Spanish, I'm Egyptian"
I'm guessing the colored in ones are playable factions? Also, that's quite a bit bigger than I was expecting (I was thinking more of a focus on the immediate Mediterranean).
It does seem more interesting to me now, but monetary reasons may restrict whether or not I buy it.

Aye, also down the right hand side there's a list of the playable factions and it highlights their starting area when you mouse over the name.

Man I played a ton of that game. Was only ever able to diplomatically take Syria and Egypt though. I've got that battle music running through my head now.

Pre-ordered and pre-loaded.

What faction are you guys thinking of starting with? I'm considering the Germanic tribe. Sounds like their units aren't very strong on their own, but they are very good at ambush tactics.

I do really like that RTW2 uses pre-Marion reform troops (at least at the beginning). I much prefer the differences of the soldier types based on social classes. More variance that way!

One of the celts for sure. Then Rome because Rome.

Do we know the scope of Rome 2? Are we gonna have another split like Rome 1 or Shogun 2?
If/when I do get this game, I pretty much already know my goal will to be to watch Rome burn.

I seem to recall hearing/reading a comment from one of the Devs how late game can see the rise of civil wars for both the player and AI if any faction gets particularly strong (it might have been one of the rally points).
There is also this achievement:
'Status Quo
As Rome or Carthage, choose not to establish an empire following a civil war'.
Sounds to me that at least those two factions get a decent likelihood of a split via civil war, with an administrative choice at the end to keep a Republic or go Imperial, with the benefits that either would bring.
I was way too late on joining Shogun 2, so I never got to enact my comedy idea of the People's Army - just a horde of the largest but most poorly trained Loan Sword Ashigarus.
I wonder if I'll be able to do something like it in Rome 2.
