If you leave undeveloped property in your cities, slums pop up, and you can recruit rabble from the slums for your armies. So that is sort of the same thing.
Sparta all the way. Although if the Seleucids become playable in DLC, I will be all over that.
Seleucids coming soon!
While the Greek States Culture Pack DLC and free Pontus playable faction update will arrive day one; by October, you’ll also be able to add the Seleucid Empire http://wiki.totalwar.com/w/Factions to your playable faction roster for free and the Nomadic Tribes Culture Pack featuring the Royal Scythians, Roxolani and Massagetae as paid-DLC.
I'm actually tempted for Athens, actually, not sure why. If my information is correct, they seem to have a 'Tokugawa' start, being the vassal of a bigger power (Macedonia/'Imagawa') on one side side and share their other border with a potentially more powerful hostile neighbour (Sparta/'Oda'). I like that start.
Looking at those achievements - has there been any information of what an economic or cultural victory means?
I think all victory conditions (including military) are defined by the faction you choose. So a cultural victory for the Romans will mean something completely different than the Iceni.
Rome. A bit boring as the default choice maybe, but I adore their almost mechanised approach to warfare. Going to enjoy showing some barbarians Rome's might.
That being said, I'm not impressed that the AI left idle units on the wall while being bombarded by artillery; it didn't even try to defend the breach.
Carthage or Athens guys? Carthage or Athens? Either one is so damn tempting.
These guys:
Or these guys?
The masters of the western mediterranean or the macedonian lapdogs? An easy choice. After Carthage probably the Averni if they actually did a decent job on the barbarians this time around*which they actually did seem to so far, but the gladatior units in that video are a poor sign*.The only thing that's going to annoy me is you can't use the edict system as Carthage in half of your starting cities, or without wars with major nations in the others.
Secrets, lies, and tragedy. The trifecta.

I'm trying to decide between Macedon, Egypt, Arverni or Iceni. I was going to go with Carthage, but I don't like how back-footed their starting position is (hey, learn the game while defending scattered holdings across the entirety of the western Mediterranean!).
Macedon kinda looks like it'd have enough power to bully around the Hellenistic states, with the possibility of getting a nice power base before taking on the big boys.
Egypt is always fun.
Arverni look to have an ambush style set up, which I like.
Iceni appear to have a nice buffer (the channel) to cover them while they learn the ropes.
I'm still on the fence with this thing. I will keep the thread updated as I fail to make a decision.
Just buy it. Everyone else is, isn't that good enough?
I was coming here to say how happy I was about getting it for ~34 dollars from that Brazilian Nuuvem site and that it was safe to do, but their deal seems to be over. Oh well. I've never had a problem with the melee total war games. It's the guns the AI can't comprehend properly, so I don't foresee any huge gameplay problems here. Even with the guns though, I enjoyed shogun and napoleon. I'm sure the colours will be fine.

Have you ever played Fall of the Samurai? Because CA fixed that shit in that game. The AI knew how to make a firing line, they usually knew how to use artillery, I've gotten flanked a decent number of times by AI cav trying to go for my weak skirmishers, Artillery, or even general. They even knew to hit linemen from behind or the side in the last couple battles I played, and even sometimes when the enemy was dumb and left their artillery when they were on the move through the battlefield, there have been a good number of times, usually when the enemy army was full of units, they would leave a line men or a few traditional troops to guard the artillery, making my job much harder.
I will agree that Empire and Nappy Battle AI (Even with Darthmod) sucks ass.

I'm thinking Athens, Egypt, or the Arveni.

Y-e-s, but that rather begs the question as to why the embargo is there. Embargoes can be a good way of stemming negative reviews that might hurt preorders.

At least 95% of games (especially big releases) these days have embargoed reviews, good or bad. I wouldn't read anything into it.

it's just a product of the ridiculous, festering corpse that is video game journalism's paid relationships with publishers. it's not worth paying attention to. only preorder a game if you know you'll like it, the end.
Don't worry, when the game comes out you'll love yourself again.
I hope this game isn't very buggy. Shogun 2 had a fine release, it's just that Empire was such a nightmare it still haunts me.
Yeah, I do take solace in the fact that my girlfriend has started getting into Shogun, and seems interested in Rome, so at least two people are doing it.
I have been watching developments with some small excitement. Thankfully we are looking at 3 days... I think I can last that long

Can't wait to get into this game, also really looking forward to the multiplayer. Early on I started up a PA Shogun 2 clan, but I stopped playing after awhile, but it was really fun (and I still feel bad about not playing, though since I was at college most of the time and my laptop can't really play it, I don't feel too bad) hopefully I can resurrect our past glories. I've seen some things for multiplayer, but I'm curious if they're going to have a similar sort of map conquest sort of thing, or if they'll go a different way with multiplayer.

If it's like that the whole time then yeah that's a head-scratcher.
