survival for me right now would be hard. I don't have any stocks of canned food at all.

But if you have canned food and access to water you're set

article talks about how hard it is to cook canned food over a fire but just eat it cold, man

to see how woefully underprepared people are for disaster all you have to do is look at a hurricane evacuation

my girlfriend and I have food for 1 month, water for 2 weeks (that's wayyyyy too little for my peace of mind!), all our stuff backed up on external hard drives, special belongings kept in one place (so they're easy to take with us), all sorts of gear for all sorts of situations

she never lets her gas get below half a tank in her car during hurricane season (it's the one we'll take if we have to leave)

and we have multiple places to evacuate to, and paper maps, and etc.

and there are some people, here in houston even!, that think that's crazy

its like - hey, asshole. did you not pay attention the last time around? or the time before that? or the time before that? or ....

Abdhy - I don't think Portugal has a lot of injection facilities either. I don't think that's a major driver of overdose rates in either case.

I think you're right that it's just the overall treatment approach vs. punishment approach.

Portugal has done really well with their decriminalization process. Some anti-drug types will point to increased drug use in Portugal as a red flag... but that kind of presumes that drug use is intrinsically bad even if crime and deaths go down, which is missing the point IMO.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

But I'm not sure we'll ever say the world is ours again, not sure we'll ever really feel at home here again. That may be for the best. Being brave means saying, in every situation, "I'll comport myself as I think honorable, no matter the risk and no matter what the voice of frowning power has to say about it." That's the kind of thinking that'll get you raped by a rhino.

I think drug use went down too, actually, over time. Or maybe that was first-time users, actually.

But if drug use did go up that is a problem. For one, the people who are financed by drug use are the... problematic kind.

They had to get people to shelter last night on the Charles River Esplanade in Boston because a lightning storm appeared.

Nothing funnier than seeing a bunch of New Englanders not know how the fuck to act around lightning.

The big secret is if an actual emergency happened everyone would have died when the two bridges you can use to get off the esplanade became reenactments of Moufasa's death scene.

We went six weeks. On October 19, 2006, in the waters off Boca Raton, Florida, a man named James Bertakis was boating with a family friend when a giant stingray leapt out of the water and into his lap. And it's important to visualize this correctly. Because it landed on his actual lap, with Bertakis in a sitting position, empty-handed—he had no rod—and the ray landed facing him, so they were eye to eye. This scene was described in some detail by the woman present. Bertakis and the ray were staring at each other, and it was flexing its tail. And then, bang. Up over its body and directly into the heart muscle, the heartflesh, inches deep. Reporters immediately asked the internationally regarded marine biologists at the University in Miami if there could be any connection, but Dr. Bob Cowen, the researcher put forward as spokesperson by the department, responded that he could "not imagine any connection" and that the attacks were "just two really unusual situations."

    "Except not," said Livengood.

OK, gonna need some popcorn for this.

    It is a great article.
Elephants on the African savanna have been raping rhinoceroses, something that evidently is just as startling to science as it to the layperson.

I'm looking it up now and it looks like the increase in drug use was a short-term spike like you predicted; over the long-term drug use went down.

    Today in Swedish news:

A man was late for his flight on Arlanda, and got the excellent idea to call in a bomb threat so the plane got delayed too.

After a massive delay, the plane finally left without him, because he got fucking arrested.

For every account that seemed a little far-fetched and made me think a few qualifying facts must have been left out, there'd be another that, while admittedly bizarre, had the instant ring of stuff you wouldn't make up, like the jogger in southeastern North Carolina who witnesses saw get surrounded on the boardwalk by a squadron of oversize male hermit crabs, which approached him, kung fu style, with that one bulging claw forward, and appeared to attempt to drive him off a pier.

Meanwhile, in the UK, this happened:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-18728303

We had an office pool on what the "suspect device" would turn out to be, since the initial reports were that a passenger had reported another passenger "pouring a liquid into a box, which produced a vapour" and that had prompted the response.

My money was on "instant noodles".

I put them in cold water that I kept boiling once it boiled.

So basically all wrong if I wanted to know how long.
