Blacklight: Retribution is a free to play first person shooter. You can
install it on Steam while you read this post! Basically two teams of up to 8 players each fight. There are lots of different game modes: deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, king of the hill, control point capture, and some sort of crazy control point capture the flag hybrid. There's also a version of team deathmatch where kills don't count unless you can get to the enemy corpse. It's pretty fun!
One of the best parts of Blacklight is all the awesome gadgets. There are riot shields, EMP mines, EMP grenades, grenades that cloak everyone in a bubble, thingies that let you revive teammates, rocket launchers, flamethrowers, poison gas grenades, and many others.
The most important tool is one that everyone gets: the visor. Turn it on with "V." It's basically a wallhack:
You can't shoot while using the visor, though, and you're slightly vulnerable for a second after you turn it off (still can't shoot), so you have to be careful about using it. Oh, and of course, there's the grenade that causes BSODs in the enemy's helmet:
Blacklight is a cyberpunk styled game, which is great if you're a fan of that. Think Neotokyo, the awesome Half-Life 2 mod, or Ghost in the Shell, but a little less Japanese. Aside from some text and stuff, it's not overtly Asian so much as it is THE FUTURE. Things are mostly grey but also mostly pretty. There's a ton of weapon customization and you can call down a mech suit to pilot around. It comes with a minigun and a railgun and to fight enemy mechs you have to use your visor to find their weak point!
The assault rifle you start out with is pretty much the best. If you like sniping, I recommend the Combat Rifle. I tried a shotgun once at it was pretty fun too. Everything is super customizable, so it's mostly a matter of finding a scope you like and a gun you like, and then fitting parts to it that match your playstyle. I go for cone of fire reduction and speed increases so I can run around shooting people in the face.
Thankfully no, at least not in my opinion. Everything important can be bought with points that you earn in-game. The gun you start with is also pretty great. As you rank up you'll get a bunch of packs that let you unlock items temporarily so that you can try things out for free. Some tips for using the store:
- Renting stuff is a really good deal: rent something for a day or 3 to see if you like it before you buy it.
- The "named" guns generally can't be customized so it might be better not to buy those unless you know you'll like them. For example, the ones in the Steam starter pack can't be customized.
- You can get free shit by signing up for Raptr. I signed up and haven't been spammed or anything and they don't ask for you Steam password or anything, just your account.
- Buying stuff from the little stations during a match is free: these are in-game powerups like health refills, weapon unlocks, and mech suits. They don't cost actual currency, they just cost "points" you earn each match that go away at the end of the match.
- Don't buy the chance packs. The odds are bad.
- Enter code 98WRE68 into the redemption page for a voice pack by some YouTube guy who I've never heard of, but the voice pack is funny.
Come play with Penny Arcaders!
We have a Steam Group. We have two clans too, one for US and one for Euro. Please give plenty of appreciation to the two people who
purchased clans for us, because it costs real money, and because it's their job to invite everyone now because only they can do it! If you're US, thank
minorincident and ask him for an invite. Otherwise if you're Euro, as
Roshin and give him your thanks.
This is the NeoTokyo soundtrack. Turn the ingame music to zero and just listen to this. Trust me.
If you run a widescreen monitor, and you want the game to let you see more on each side rather than cutting off stuff on the top and the bottom, go to your Steam folder, head to "steamapps\common\blacklightretribution\Blacklight Retribution\Live\FoxGame\Config\PCConsole\Cooked" and find the "PCConsole-FoxEngine.ini" file. Change "AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_Maintain
YFOV" to "AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_Maintain
XFOV" and then edit your ingame field of view until it looks good.

You're good at FPS games!
That Raptr site is pretty okay actually. Free stuff for doing nothing but signing up.
I got 2 permanent unlocks from that Raptr site, and I think 2 other temporary ones and I think it included 2 weapons so I'll be trying those out.
is it worth paying $10 for the starter whatchamacallit?

Tried out an SMG receiver, tricked it out for running speed, but I just don't have much luck with that thing.
Also, the Revolver with an open scope can provide some fun times. The gun customization is going to consume me completely.
Yeah, I didn't think about how slow and big they are, and how they can't jump, and I called one in behind some guardrails by a wall and was stuck in the sonofabitch and the enemy team just avoided me and I sat there the rest of the round feeling like a fucking idiot (I couldn't figure out how to get out of it, if you even can).
Note to everyone that I gleaned from official forums, NEVER BUY THE CHANCE PACKS. They are horrible stilted, they list 10 things you could get, but its not a 10% chance for them, the things you really want are actually like 2% and the "you get 100GP" thing is like 10% which is a joke. Those chance packs aren't Zombie's fault though, Perfect World their publisher are cocks and made them do it.
I do like the Renting something for a day, great when I have a Saturday open and wanna play around with a new gun type, though I actually steal guns from higher level players a lot too which is interesting.
this thing, it makes me sad
Well, I and everyone in the match had a good laugh about it afterwards but next time I'll know. I'll know.
The customization is seriously very broad, there is so much you can do.
Having a silly team mate accidentally drop their hardsuit on the hardsuit you just called in is pretty far up there...
Team warlord basically is most points on your team and high threat is a dude who's been killing a ton of dudes in a single life; you get a bonus for killing them too. Something to that effect.
The earning 0gp thing is a bug, I think if it keeps happening I heard you should submit a bug report or something? I don't know, perhaps the official forums might have the answer but it is a known thing and they are working on it.
Oh man I'm gonna shoot so many mans and buy so many guns.
Boo.
I shot a guy in the back last night just as he was about to call down the mech.
i am going to play the shit out of this tomorrow
this is exactly what i wish neotokyo had been

stuff to note:
PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOURE BUYING i didnt notice some stuff was only being rented because i just clicked through the menus LOL
everybody be cool this is a robbery
i still slightly prefer elements of neotokyo but this is looking pretty interesting, but i wish recoil was much more severe for almost all guns because spray is pretty horrendous atm
This game is surprisingly fun.
