Blacklight: Retribution is a free to play first person shooter. You can install it on Steam while you read this post! Basically two teams of up to 8 players each fight. There are lots of different game modes: deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, king of the hill, control point capture, and some sort of crazy control point capture the flag hybrid. There's also a version of team deathmatch where kills don't count unless you can get to the enemy corpse. It's pretty fun!

One of the best parts of Blacklight is all the awesome gadgets. There are riot shields, EMP mines, EMP grenades, grenades that cloak everyone in a bubble, thingies that let you revive teammates, rocket launchers, flamethrowers, poison gas grenades, and many others.

The most important tool is one that everyone gets: the visor. Turn it on with "V." It's basically a wallhack:

pUqLo.gif

You can't shoot while using the visor, though, and you're slightly vulnerable for a second after you turn it off (still can't shoot), so you have to be careful about using it. Oh, and of course, there's the grenade that causes BSODs in the enemy's helmet:

Blacklight is a cyberpunk styled game, which is great if you're a fan of that. Think Neotokyo, the awesome Half-Life 2 mod, or Ghost in the Shell, but a little less Japanese. Aside from some text and stuff, it's not overtly Asian so much as it is THE FUTURE. Things are mostly grey but also mostly pretty. There's a ton of weapon customization and you can call down a mech suit to pilot around. It comes with a minigun and a railgun and to fight enemy mechs you have to use your visor to find their weak point!

The assault rifle you start out with is pretty much the best. If you like sniping, I recommend the Combat Rifle. I tried a shotgun once at it was pretty fun too. Everything is super customizable, so it's mostly a matter of finding a scope you like and a gun you like, and then fitting parts to it that match your playstyle. I go for cone of fire reduction and speed increases so I can run around shooting people in the face.

Thankfully no, at least not in my opinion. Everything important can be bought with points that you earn in-game. The gun you start with is also pretty great. As you rank up you'll get a bunch of packs that let you unlock items temporarily so that you can try things out for free. Some tips for using the store:
  • Renting stuff is a really good deal: rent something for a day or 3 to see if you like it before you buy it.
  • The "named" guns generally can't be customized so it might be better not to buy those unless you know you'll like them. For example, the ones in the Steam starter pack can't be customized.
  • You can get free shit by signing up for Raptr. I signed up and haven't been spammed or anything and they don't ask for you Steam password or anything, just your account.
  • Buying stuff from the little stations during a match is free: these are in-game powerups like health refills, weapon unlocks, and mech suits. They don't cost actual currency, they just cost "points" you earn each match that go away at the end of the match.
  • Don't buy the chance packs. The odds are bad.
  • Enter code 98WRE68 into the redemption page for a voice pack by some YouTube guy who I've never heard of, but the voice pack is funny.

Come play with Penny Arcaders! We have a Steam Group. We have two clans too, one for US and one for Euro. Please give plenty of appreciation to the two people who purchased clans for us, because it costs real money, and because it's their job to invite everyone now because only they can do it! If you're US, thank minorincident and ask him for an invite. Otherwise if you're Euro, as Roshin and give him your thanks.

This is the NeoTokyo soundtrack. Turn the ingame music to zero and just listen to this. Trust me.

If you run a widescreen monitor, and you want the game to let you see more on each side rather than cutting off stuff on the top and the bottom, go to your Steam folder, head to "steamapps\common\blacklightretribution\Blacklight Retribution\Live\FoxGame\Config\PCConsole\Cooked" and find the "PCConsole-FoxEngine.ini" file. Change "AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_MaintainYFOV" to "AspectRatioAxisConstraint=AspectRatio_MaintainXFOV" and then edit your ingame field of view until it looks good.

Nice thread. I agree with everything you said except for the starter assault rifle being the best because it is the worst.

Haven't played too much of it myself, but if we get a good team together, that will work together, I'm certain this will be an amazing game.

If it's the worst, tell me how I'm #1 on my team basically every round using only that rifle.

    You're good at FPS games!

That Raptr site is pretty okay actually. Free stuff for doing nothing but signing up.

Actually, what is the best gun, or a better gun, at least? I've only been playing a couple of days so honestly I shouldn't be talking. Heck, I just started hitting the level of matchmaking where players have items of their own like riot shields and stuff. I haven't bought anything yet. What should I be looking to pick up?

  • FreiFrei A French Prometheus Unbound DeadwoodRegistered User regular
I actually don't know, I've only been playing a little bit, as well. The starter AR just doesn't feel very right for me, though it's a perfectly serviceable weapon. I'll be experimenting with stuff just as soon as I can get some solid game time in.

I got 2 permanent unlocks from that Raptr site, and I think 2 other temporary ones and I think it included 2 weapons so I'll be trying those out.

I've heard mixed things. If you like the guns you get, then yes, it's worth it, but you can't really know that ahead of time (although you could play a bit and try some other guns out). You've got 5 days to decide while it's still half price.

I've been using this burstfire rifle with an open scope. Then I hang back a bit and look for long fire lanes and offer mid to long range support. It's not super great at long ranges but it can still make a few enemies duck their heads.

Tried out an SMG receiver, tricked it out for running speed, but I just don't have much luck with that thing.

Also, the Revolver with an open scope can provide some fun times. The gun customization is going to consume me completely.

The combat rifle reciever is nice. 80 base damage lets you kill most players in 3 shots. Useless in CQC tho.

Is time a gift or punishment?

I will say the starter AR has the shittiest cone of fire when shooting from the hip. You definitely gotta aim down the sights with that one, but when you do it's a perfectly serviceable gun.

Also Hardsuits are incredibly deadly if your team sticks with you, but if you're alone you're pretty exposed. It only takes 2 rockets to kill you and the rocket launcher is really inexpensive.

You're also slow as heck, so you'd better be smart about where you call it in and where you commit to going once you've got it.

  • MegaMekMegaMek Girls like girls. Registered User regular
Also you can use the flamethrower to barbeque people out of their hardsuits and steal them.

Yeah, I didn't think about how slow and big they are, and how they can't jump, and I called one in behind some guardrails by a wall and was stuck in the sonofabitch and the enemy team just avoided me and I sat there the rest of the round feeling like a fucking idiot (I couldn't figure out how to get out of it, if you even can).

I'd like to chime in and say this is a really solid FPS. The F2P model is a bit Up and Down in places, mostly that time needed to unlock a new gun isn't bad (almost to 5500 GP after 17 hours of play), but then all the extras are all about the same, so 6 pieces for a gun is about 6 weeks of play (for me, with about 2 hours a night), though at least many pieces can be interchanged so its kind of like runes from LoL.

Note to everyone that I gleaned from official forums, NEVER BUY THE CHANCE PACKS. They are horrible stilted, they list 10 things you could get, but its not a 10% chance for them, the things you really want are actually like 2% and the "you get 100GP" thing is like 10% which is a joke. Those chance packs aren't Zombie's fault though, Perfect World their publisher are cocks and made them do it.

I do like the Renting something for a day, great when I have a Saturday open and wanna play around with a new gun type, though I actually steal guns from higher level players a lot too which is interesting.

"E" gets out just like it gets in, I think. You might have to hold it down.

This game looks incredibly cool, I really wanna give it a try. Has anyone had any luck resolving the account creation issues, though? I've made multiple accounts across several (eh, 3) different e-mails now with absolutely zero luck.

this thing, it makes me sad

Put a decent amount of playtime in just now. This game is great and the customization really hooks you. The gametypes are fun, the visor is a great mechanic, and the shooting is very solid. I am not a wizard when it comes to FPS games, but I'm doing pretty decently. I tried out the SMG and found it to be much better than the starter assault rifle (the optics on it really help, and you can actually hipfire it if need be, unlike the rifle). The visor is amazing with SMG gameplay as you can pinpoint enemies and quickly flank when kitted out with a specific build.

The customization is seriously very broad, there is so much you can do.

Renting is super cheap generally. I can play a round or two and rent just about everything I want for a day. Then the money I earn in proceding matches goes to buying one or two pieces permanently. Actually is a pretty good f2p setup.

Having a silly team mate accidentally drop their hardsuit on the hardsuit you just called in is pretty far up there...
...I was the former in that one case...the guy actually took it pretty well and we had a good laugh though.

Two hardsuits walking up the street on the construction map is the most intimidating thing. It's also the funnest thing to do.

Okay, so I was just playing this and it was pretty fun, but...how do you earn money and get new items outside of $? It'd say I earned 190gp at the end of a match, but the currency counter in the corner would still say 0 and if I tried to buy something it listed a balance of 0gp. Also what does team warlord or high threat mean? Those came up a few times and they sounded cool but I don't know what they do.

Team warlord basically is most points on your team and high threat is a dude who's been killing a ton of dudes in a single life; you get a bonus for killing them too. Something to that effect.

The earning 0gp thing is a bug, I think if it keeps happening I heard you should submit a bug report or something? I don't know, perhaps the official forums might have the answer but it is a known thing and they are working on it.

Oh hey. When time runs out on a piece of gear you rented you get the option to rent it again for a low price. This is pretty great. You can build a gun out of anything you've unlocked for peanuts basically and then live with it and tweak it for a while without too much expense in GP. You should still be able to easily save up GP while checking out all kinds of stuff, and if you like it enough then you can save up to make a permanent purchase.

Oh man I'm gonna shoot so many mans and buy so many guns.

there is no reason to replace the starting assault rifle for the first 20 levels really

    stuff to note:

PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOURE BUYING i didnt notice some stuff was only being rented because i just clicked through the menus LOL

everybody be cool this is a robbery

i still slightly prefer elements of neotokyo but this is looking pretty interesting, but i wish recoil was much more severe for almost all guns because spray is pretty horrendous atm

Most if the time I rock the Combat rifle, with attachments geared towards recoil reduction and damage. Its working out okay, though ive yet to find a suitable sidearm. I think the shotty is what i want, but thats a few levels away.

I have the day off and thought I would play this and get some levels. The server browser displays a proud total of five (5!) open servers, which are all full, of course. All other servers require a password. Chat is overflowing with "Wuts going on???", "I can't get into game!!" and various troll messages. Quick Join can't find anything and there's no information about any of this in the launcher. Server status is green, yo!
