So I keep feeling like there's something I'm not aware of about this game yet. I just started, played several matches last night and did pretty well.
But the hook to this game is the drop points/reload points and the wall hack, right?
I expect to see someone with invisibility or something, or something to prevent the wall hack from working on them, etc.
I've clocked a number of hours and I'm still seeing things that catch me offguard. I'll just be doing my thing when suddenly I run into some guy rocking a riot shield, or making a pincushion out of my with throwing knives.
Everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
There aren't any special skills/powers is what I'm curious about.
I don't understand what the distinction is. If you can cloak, that seems like a special skill/power whether or not it comes from the store.
Let me ask a different way.
This isn't like Ghost Recon Online where there's a class system and each class gets a skill to use, right? It's all just the store customization and the HRV or whatever it's called, correct?
yeah, anything special will come from store/unlock stuff, i gather.
i am confused like crazy by the customization screen though, i have no real way of tracking down stuff i've unlocked short of just going through everything? and am i to expect that i won't be unlocking weapons and stuff through leveling for a while? or. i dunnno.

Click the two checkboxes to the right of the item list at the bottom of the customization screen and it will only show items that you have. You'll unlock weapons when you level up the first time or when you complete the training. Actually you never unlock weapons, you unlock receivers, which form the base of the gun.
There aren't any special skills/powers is what I'm curious about.
I have no idea what it was, but in my first game there was totally a guy that tried to slink past me completely invisible except for a predator-esque orange shimmer. I filled him with bullets.
I *think* the "tactical" gear slot gives you these kinds of powers, like the first one you unlock at level 5 is the revival syringe that you can throw at a body to get them back up, it's pretty good. You get other kinds of cool gadgets that can replace your grenade and knife slots as well.
This isn't a class-based game so there's no innate special powers beyond your wallhack mode and basic tools.

I can't wait to unlock those riot shields. It will lead to hilarious shenanigans with me blocking doorways or whatever else I can think of

So what's up with the teams? I've been on bravo every single time. And I still don't understand why sometimes I spawn automatically and other times I have to hit space.
Oh and for the next update, please let us be able to turn off global chat completely. So many idiots.
i think you are always on bravo because its "bravo = allies, alpha = enemies", going with the blue=friendlies orange=enemies color scheme. the spawn thing i think is there's a "reinitialization" counter underneath the spawn menu i think, and i think that automatically spawns you every like 30 seconds if you are dead. don't know the purpose.
I've had it happen sometimes where when the regular respawn timer is up it automatically respawns me, I think that might be what anoffday is talking about. Probably a bug?
There is your normal respawn timer which is a few seconds, and then there is the "interval" timer which is ~30 seconds or so which forces everyone who's currently dead at that time to respawn. I'm guessing this mechanism exists to prevent people from waiting around forever to get revived by a syringe.
I've had it happen sometimes where when the regular respawn timer is up it automatically respawns me, I think that might be what anoffday is talking about. Probably a bug?
That'd be when your head was blown off. Since you can't be revived when you've no head it automatically respawns you.
Right, I mean I know about the reinitialization timer. Sometimes though, with the reinitialization timer still ticking in the background, your regular respawn timer will tick to zero and then force you back into harsh, unforgiving life without any input from you.
It's a thing that happens. I think it is most likely a bug.

Ohh okay. I suppose that could be it. I feel like I lose my head a lot more than this happens, although I suppose that could be because I'm usually hitting space immediately anyway.
Yeah, sometime's it's not immediately obvious. I myself have fallen victim to the jumping at spawn a fair amount of times.
edit: Mashing the spacebar is a habit I should get out of; there have been times when I'm running to revive someone only to miss them by half a second or so.

Yeah I end up jumping a lot when I spawn too because of it.
So as backwards as this sounds, I like to try games out for myself and then read reviews later and I guess gamespot gave the game a pretty low score. And I know it's a gamestop and they're horrible, but one of their big points bugs me. They said the mechs are clunky. I'm sorry, but is there such a thing as smooth mechs?

A lot of them, yeah. Amazingly, the pub servers seem slightly less idiotic than Battlefield3. Which is crazy because there is literally zero monetary barrier to entry here.

Yea, maybe. If there is someone on the team that I've seen trying to revive people that might be worth it. It doesn't seem to happen very frequently though.
As for myself, if I can't get to someone within ~5 seconds or whatever of seeing them die I usually just take it as given that they'll auto-respawn and give up on it. It's a bit of a hit in the objective-based modes to have to do that, but the maps are small enough that it isn't a huge problem.
Incidentally, my favorite use of the revival thing so far has been on a kill confirmed map, I just wanted to hug my teammates when they caught on to what I was trying to do. There was some sweet teamwork going on so there would be just masses of corpses (with uncollected skulls) of both teams, where each side kept trying to push through decisively enough to collect everything. After a couple times of being unable to salvage after the mass slaughter, I started tossing the little res balls at a couple teammates before going down in a blaze of glory, and they'd get up when everything was clear and collect all the skulls. It is a simple strategy but it felt pretty sweet at the time.

I haven't had too much trouble with idiots in pubs. People are generally quiet in the games, but global chat is awful. I really want an option to just turn it off completely. I have no desire to talk to any of those people.

i like that the mechs are clunky. the pause after a sprint feels punishing, but at the same time anything shorter and the mechs would be sprinting across maps and just destroying people. they are well balanced in that with appropriate support and in good non-open areas, they really dominate. however, they are easy prey if they are by themselves, in the open, etc. i think they are a well balanced "killstreak", to use cod terms. powerful when used right, not always the right choice with your game credits, and can be taken down with not a lot of effort on the enemy team's part (stingers are easy).

well, not so much idiots as opposed to people not having a clue what to do. Help defend the points instead of running around like headless chickens, damnit.
They need to add a symbol for medics, when you have syringes you see downed people and can go get them. Nothing on the other side to know if you should be holding out for someone to pick you up.
"Tactical" Gear slots have 2 types, Back and Regular slots. Back slots provide revive/health/ammo/etc type items you can only have one of that provide a distinct ability. Regular slots allow you to bring melee weapons/grenades/mines to the table.
Every level or so you unlock a handful of stuff, and the game typically also floats you a 3 day pass to use that item. You can check your active unlocks in your inventory if you want to get an idea of what you got so you can give it a shot.
Typically at the lower levels you won't see much variation in the equipment, but people that shell out realbux for it can unlock any item at any time. So there will be a rare few people with the level 40 throwing knives or riot shield.
If you are looking for anything special besides complete character customization (Can gear armor towards mobility versus health) and weapons with complete customization (To make them say better CQC weapons with higher mobility, or super accurate) The Hardsuits (power armor) add quite a bit of fun to the game, using HRV to pin point weak points and dropping them with burst fire rifles is a blast. I'm hoping they'd eventually incorporate different Hardsuits with other abilities, one that jumps wouldn't hurt.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to HRV hardsuits though, if you going up against one that is the only way to deal damage with a ballistic weapon. Also you can look at your own suit before equipping it to know which way to face when under fire so you take less damage.

Maybe there are, but it's still a weird point. The mechs are intentionally cumbersome and (due to the lack of HRV) basically blind, these are the strategic things you're supposed to take into account when using one. It's not like it takes that long to get 1400 CP in-game, they're not supposed to elegant, unstoppable killing machines. Just (potentially) tactically advantageous killing machines.

That's what I'm saying. I feel like the person who wrote that has never played any games with mechs or seen a movie with a mech in it. They're huge metal robots that you can sit in and control their arms and legs. They're going to be clunky. They're already powerful. Do they want them to be unstoppable too so then they complain about how the game has OP items?
You guys are telling me you don't find people constantly spamming GABEN and ASKFSGH in chat scintillating conversation?
I've seen the riot shield in play a few times. I love how it expands when you deploy it, it seems super useful. Someone set it up to guard the point they were capturing (KOTH, so no hacking required, just proximity), which would have worked well had I not been carrying a grenade launcher.
A lot of them, yeah. Amazingly, the pub servers seem slightly less idiotic than Battlefield3. Which is crazy because there is literally zero monetary barrier to entry here.
I realized yesterday that I haven't seen anyone teabag, which is sort of refreshing. There's even a teabag taunt, but you have to pay for it, so no one has it. Speaking of taunts, man, some of those digital ones are so cool that I'm tempted to blow money just for them.

All very true. I was actually pleasantly surprised when I'd played for a good bit and found out how well balanced the hardsuits were within the game.

Hahaha, that Gamespot review is awful. I just checked it out and the two main negative points are "things cost a lot" and "hardsuits are slow". Um, no shit, Sherlock? It's a F2P game that costs nothing to enjoy but they need to have some way to make money. As for the hardsuits, they're one of the best tactical force multipliers I've seen in any game. Massively powerful when used properly, but big, expensive coffins when used stupidly.
Anyway, rented the revolver and the bolt-action receivers. Big fan of the revolver; the standard pistol is pretty much garbage, but the revolver is a beast. It's almost like a pocket sniper rifle, though it doesn't have the range to do that properly. Also definitely like the bolt-action as long as the map isn't one of the stupid tiny ones; looking forward to when I can boost that up to get to 200 damage a shot, because it's already a decent weapon even when you have to two-shot people.
Is it normal if I can't keep my aim on fast moving enemies? I've resortig to just spray&praying at close range, aiming down the sights always got me killed. I just try to aim left to right over the general direction of my enemy, and most of the time it works. Only really have problems with hitting enemies at range.

Close range I can't aim for shit so I fire from the hip and pray I get a kill. With the burstfire rifle this seems to work decently so it's not too big of an issue. At medium to long range though I have no problems mowing dudes down aiming down the sights.

That's how I do it. I don't even bother trying to aim down the sights at close range. There's no point. By the time you raise the gun you're already dead at that close.
Hip firing works fine at close range. Save the sights for medium/long range dudes.

Yeah, trying to keep a guy in your sights with manual aim can be extremely obnoxious if they're too close. Trying to aim down sights all the time is actually a bad habit here, since it makes you slow enough for a moving player to hip-fire to death pretty easily while close up.
On that score, I would advise learning the names of the maps and just not play on the bullshit tiny ones that just favor constant sprint-and-shoot. There are at least 3-4 larger maps that are a lot more fun to play since everyone isn't just jammed together and there are a lot more opportunities to play something besides hip-firing SMGs/automatics.
I mostly use a reflex sight SMG that sights in a sixth of a second so I usually aim unless they're within 10 feet. If they're so close that you can't keep up with their turning there's no reason to sight in though.

I just had the most frustrating match of KOTH ever. Not one point captured. I almost got one by myself but I couldn't hold on forever. My team was running away from the points. It was like, "onoes it's those guys with the guns that way!" I think I may stick to some Pure Gametype servers over the Pure Map servers. At least when people are playing a certain objective over and over it sinks in. Maybe I'll just use the Pure Map servers to really get to know a map and then abandon them.
