Some of the textures in this game being solid really conspire to get me killed.
For instance, the barbed wire above the chain link fences in holodeck. It is wide enough that you would, on visual inspection, expect a grenade to fit through and that's notwithstanding the fact it's simply just 3 lines of wire. But nope, it's a wall that your grenade will bounce off of!
For some reason when I see cloaked people, I think they're friendly and ignore them. I believe it goes back to TF2 spies?
That makes no sense. If it went back to TF2 spies you should be firing half a clip into them to spy check.
I meant the invis part. Friendly spies are somewhat visible when cloaked. Enemy spies are scouts that run too slow.
Nope still shot them all.
Only way to be sure.

Yea, you just shoot everyone in TF2, all the time. You might have just spawned in a room that's impossible for the enemy to enter and you still shoot your teammates.

And finally, the Blue Portal Gun Weapon Tag is now available for 1,337 GP. Now you too can join the elite group of Agents that are able to dangle a gun off their gun.
Oh, I had seen the Krane Allstar and thought it seemed new, it's exactly the same as the other explosive pre-made revolver except with a scope. Guess I'll have to look at the rest.
So I rented the premade burstfire rifle with incindiary ammo and that shit is hilarious. Very frequently I'd pop a few rounds into someone and see them burn to death behind cover or shortly after they managed to kill me. So useful.
What do the other elemental ammo types do, though? Is there some authoritative source I can look this shit up? Any wikis or whatever I found were paltry and sparse.

they tell you in game
explosive does 80% damage but jars vision and stops revives
toxic is a longer dot + obscures vision + does less damage
incendiary does 70% damage up front 40% on dot
shock does less damage, fucks up turning speed and bones robots

Electric slows I believe
Toxic is also a DoT, obscures vision some?
Explosive blows heads up when killed, so no revival possible

I bought that steam starter pack for $10, the premade SMG is serviceable and the burstfire haz mat seems decent enough for a close range swap finisher, but it's absolute shit past short-medium range. The perm grenades are also a nice touch, they should allow me to build up some GP without having to spend any on weapons.
I'm starting to fear that early premades are just going to become worthless when they start to roll out newer, better premades.
Just started messing around with this game the other day. It seems kind of neat. I'm a little offput by how much it costs to unlock some things permanently (7k for a level 1 armor? Eek.) Also the weapon balance feels kind of... off. I've just been messing around with the pre-mades but they do not feel like they were created equal. I tried some of the heavy machineguns and a few of the single shot sniper rifles and I could generally go about 1:1 on kills, but I felt like I was really working for most of my kills. Switched over to one of the SMGs and it just melts people. It pumps out damage stupid quick, lets you move around really fast and is crazy accurate even if you don't ironsight. It just melts people. I basically went on an unopposed spree straight into a hard suit and mopped up. Usually I was in the lower third of my team and with the SMG I placed second. It wasn't just that I was killing people, it felt like I was playing an entirely different game where killing people now took trivial effort on my end.

It depends heavily on how you play and what levels you're playing on.
I have one sniper load out and one SMG load out that I swap between depending on the size of the level (sniping is useless on the smaller ones like Helodeck) and the strategy that the enemy team seems to be employing. Sniping is a better way to cut through entrenched defenses, whereas the SMG is a wiser choice if everyone is running and gunning.
Of course, some people are just better at one style of play or the other, so that's a factor too.

Yeah, it's pretty simple on the Proving Grounds servers. It's the same deal as Tribes there, lots of fodder. Once you start playing on the level restricted servers you see a bit more competency.

That's true. I wasn't trying to say that the SMGs were the only guns. The sniper rifles seem very strong too. I just know I've never been a good sniper in FPS games so I've stayed away. But all the weapons in between the SMG and the sniper rifle seem to be in a bit of an odd place in my limited fiddling. With the middle guns you'll lose any long range engagement to a sniper and you'll lose any close range engagement to an SMG. Maps seem to alternate long hallways and narrow corners, I'm not sure where I'd really want a mid-range gun.
Drake: How do I tell if I'm on Proving Grounds or not? Quick match never seems to find any games for me so I've just been joining random servers. Sometimes I get low level people like myself but plenty of times I'm tussling with level 20+ people. Also some people that don't have levels but are 'Battlehardened' not sure what that means? Is that just at level cap?

One thing I wih they'd change is how points are weighted in objective based games.
I feel like if I was responsible for all 5 flag captures that wins us a match of CTF, I shouldn't be in 6th place behind a bunch of guys who just acted like it was death match time and did zero objectives.
Same for DOM and KC. In the pub games I've played, the top people rarely capture any points/pick up many tags.
It almost encourages ignoring objectives, which most pubs are almost inclined to do anyway.

Yeah, you can entirely bypass the Proving Grounds servers if you want to do so, playing on level restricted servers isn't necessary at all. Take a look at the filters in the server browser, there's several options dealing with this.
The titles you see under peoples names are mainly from Beta events right now. There are two available in the Zen Store too, these seem to be joke titles. I imagine more will be added over time that signify certain milestones, but I imagine they'll have to get the profiles working properly first.
Wow, this just cleans up on Proving Grounds servers. It's too bad I didn't get this earlier, as I'm about to exit the 1-10 bracket, and sneaking around knifing people has been too much fun.
re: weapon types
assault rifle, smg, burst fire and bolt action all seem capable (boltaction less so unless 200 damage bolt action IMO)
combat rifle seems to be outclassed by bolt action, and I haven't played around with the lmg.
revolver is god-tier, as it should be.
Shameful pursuits and utterly stupid opinions

A combat rifle with some increased damage and a good scope can rival a bolt action for long distance shooting, and also be capable for midrange firefights, too. If I only had one load out, that's what I'd go with.

Had a few rounds with @Corehealer today, playing CTF. Had a lot of fun, and also tried out the grenade launcher. Damn, that thing is ridiculous. Wish I was better with it, though.

I haven't tried it yet, but if you built a combat rifle up to minimize recoil I suspect it might end up being pretty solid.

So did something happen to the burstfire rifle recently? Because just a few days ago I was doing great with it, and now the thing won't hit jack. Red-dot, 3.9x scope, open holo, it just will not hit where the reticle is pointed on any of the three burst bullets. It feels like I'm shooting a cartoon gun that just makes the outline of the target without actually hitting the target, which has actually happened on more than one occasion now; see somebody running along, scope in, put the reticle on-target, pull the trigger, and proceed to watch in amazement as every last round jitters off anywhere besides the center of the reticle.
I mean, I'm getting outshot by assault rifles and SMGs for single-shot accuracy. It's driving me out of my mind.
EDIT: And my inclination is to think that I'm doing something wrong, but I haven't seen anybody else using burstfire rifles. Did I miss a memo or something?

Thats what I run, and its great. Ive got it down to140 ish and you can pretty much pop off shots one after the other with almost no recoil. One headshot+one bodyshot will kill anyone, or 3 bodyshots. Imo it definately outclasses the bolt action.
The only problem ive run into is that the first shot in a clip sometimes has massive recoil. Seems like a bug

the only thing they changed about the burstfire is the amount of ammo you can carry - down from 4 mags to 3 mags
aim better!
Unless there's a special kind of aiming that involves putting the crosshairs anywhere but on the target, I think I'm just going to have to drop the burstfire reciever. Getting tapped by full-auto weapons at mid/long ranges and hosed up close isn't something I have a lot of patience for, especially when even the first bullet won't even reliably hit on-target. Wouldn't be a problem at all if the recoil was consistent, but sometimes you hit once, sometimes you miss with everything, and sometimes all three rounds actually hit near the crosshair and put somebody down almost immediately.

I was/am going to try that as soon as i finish my ar. Ideally, you want like 84 damage, so you 3 hit kill anything, and the lowest recoil possible.

really good with bolt actions, takes the clip from 5 to 7
