Remember some of that stuff Pachter said about Activision putting the squeeze on Nintendo...as we figured none of it was based on any so called "facts."
“I am putting two and two together to conclude that Activision put pressure on them. I do not know this either first-hand or third-hand; nobody told me. I am merely deducing it from what we know, and it’s an educated guess.” - Michael Pachter
After all, you can’t really play blockbuster games like the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II with the Wii U’s tablet controller.
Has anybody told Pachter that the tablet controller has the same buttons as the regular controller? I mean, he was at E3, right? Hasn't he held one of the darn things by now?

The thing is, I would buy into third party pressure forcing nintendo's hand, but it being capcom, since they've already done it twice.
Citation needed on the end bit there. And I can buy into the idea too, but it wouldn't be a delivered ultimatum. The pressure would come in the form of expressed discontent with how things were with the Wii. It'd be heavily implied and nothing more. Anything delivered directly, Nintendo has the balls (and currently the clout) to shrug it off.

I think he's talking about the Classic Controller Pro and Circle Pad Pro, since Monster Hunter was basically a big reason for both. Though there's really no way to know if Capcom really forced them to make them.

Honestly, how the fuck do you get hired as a video game analyst? I'd love to just sit and guess at shit and get paid. Heck, I already do that as a hobby, may as well go full bore.
And why does anyone even listen to Patcher anymore? Everytime that guy opens his mouth I wonder if he's ever played a video game in his life.
I think Patcher must be making money for someone if only through creating self-fulfilling prophecies since he seems so high profile. In regards to Nintendo their stock has fallen pretty badly over the last couple of years so an investor would probably trust him.

According to Giant Bomb, Pachter is actually a great dude. And NeoGAF has him around as well. So we're just not getting it. I'd love to interact with him and turn my perception around from "ugh, stop making bombastically dumb statements" to "look, you're a nice guy and all, but I disagree." It sounds like there's potential for it.

You have to wonder? The guy obviously hasn't touched a game in his life, or at least in the last 25 years. You don't need a video game degree to become an analyst.

Part of being an analyst is knowing what the audience wants. Video games have two general audiences; the broad audience that this generation brought into liking video games, and then the audience that's, well, us nerds. But the knowing part involves the potential analyst involving themselves in those demographics. I think NeoGAF is an attempt by Pachter to do that (if it's true he posts there), but I'm not sure if he's really "doing it right."
So many of us fit that nerdy demographic. We desire indie games, we appreciate the non-multi-million titles. But we're also a part of that broad audience. Some of you have families. We have careers. We have our mortgages and foreclosures. We go out to drink on weekends (and some weekdays too). It's why a lot of what gets said in this thread is more accurate than what Pachter can ever bring to the table. His perspective is generally accurate from a broad-audience way, but without really 'getting' the rest of us, he can't really predict or analyze much. Because despite everyone whining about Kinect and waggle and Sony killing BC, the industry itself has NOT forgotten us and still makes decisions based on us.
Edit - Ugh, that got Brave Heart-y at the end there. I'm just a guy who likes video games, fuck it.
Part of being an industry analyst, to a very large extent, is also appealing to the type-A, profit-oriented stock market traders who would rather have something short and definitive rather than something long and nuanced so they can make their decision NOW. For instance:
Wrong: In my opinion, the outlook for Nintendo is dependent on how several different factors play out. As of right now, the Nintendo 3DS is selling well, though it's not selling as strongly as the DS was at its peak, Nintendo has a somewhat spotty record when it comes to delivering broad-appeal, high selling game on an evenly-distributed calendar basis and it remains to be seen how much of the portable market has been eroded by smartphones and tablets. As for the Wii U, while it appears to have strong initial interest from third-parties and a much improved online initiative, we don't yet know whether the public will view it as primarily a game machine or a tablet, and precious few tablets have been able to stand up to tsunami of iPad sales.
Right: Nintendo sucks.
Pachter excels at the latter. Never mind that long and nuanced can potentially help people make better decisions.
This is true for pretty much every industry, not just this one.
With the F2P thing, I think the biggest F2P game out there right now that started that way is League of Legends. That game pulls near WoW numbers of players, and makes it very easy to accidentally spend more than the $60 you would spend on a full price retail game over the course of a couple weeks thanks to selling not only cosmetic content, but also access to characters that take a long time of playing the game to unlock with the in-game currency. In fact, they probably have enough people on the hook buying each character as soon as they come out that they may as well have a large amount of people on subscriptions.
Now, I don't have actual numbers to compare precisely, but I'd think that it's safe to say that either LoL or TF2 are the biggest F2P money makers out there right now (except for maybe stuff like Farmville), and are proof that the pricing model works for more than just breaking even on struggling games.

Free to Play is the most exciting model of video game development. There will be good pay-for options and bad. There will never be a utopian or distopian form of it.

Yep, those two.
As for pachter, analysts are all about observing general trends to make predictions, and Nintendo consistently do their own thing. Probably why analysts are always wrong about Nintendo and tend be dismissive of them.
The problem is that that statement is just a pure 100% bullshit random comment, with nothing about it based on anything. And he fucking admitted it too. He could have said anything and gotten a similar effect.
"I believe that Sega must be putting pressure on Sony to develop a faster disc drive. The 2x speed of the PS3's Blu-ray drive is too slow for Sonic games."
All that came out of his mouth was "Random company A, Random company B, Peripheral", using a dartboard to come up with the specifics.

F2P is interesting, but the ascertain some make that ALL games will become F2P is ludicrous.
Even the most money-making-driven of companies know it won't work for all games. They certainly may try, but a failed attempt may result in a game getting canned, rather than being put out in a traditional "buy the product" way (if the company was hell bent on making it appear that all their games are F2P). But see, the video game industry is full of people watching on the sidelines who see new things and say that those new things are going to usurp the entirety of the industry. And I only perceive that as being a trend that picked up enough steam to be noticed with this recent gen. Can you imagine if that mentality existed prior to this generation?
"Multiple disc games? UGH NOW EVERY GAME IS GOING TO BE LIKE THIS."
"Active time combat? UGH NOW EVERY RPG IS GOING TO BE LIKE THIS."
"3D gameplay? UGH NOW EVERY GAME IS GOING TO BE LIKE THIS." ... Actually this one had some merit back in the day but it died off.
I think Pachter's real job is to get the Wedbush name out there and to recruit investors from the tech/gaming industry for his securities firm. He isn't at E3 to see new games or hardware, he's there to throw a very expensive party for prospective clients.

While it's certainly stupid to a magnitude only encompassed by Pachter that ALL games will become F2P, it's not a terrible idea for most companies to make at least one good F2P game. Set aside a small team to run the thing and use it as a fairly good source of ongoing income; it doesn't have to be a megahit success to turn a continuous profit.
Well, if there was any room in the current industry attitude for moderate success. Which there clearly isn't, what with all the batshit crazy people running things.
70 per cent of DC Universe Online players connect to the free-to-play game via PlayStation 3.
The fact that only a minority of gamers play the PC version proves "free-to-play on PlayStation 3 is huge", Sony Europe boss John Smedley claimed.
"Right now, it's us with DCUO and Free Realms and our friends at CCP with Dust 514 that are going to prove that this market really works," Smedley told Eurogamer sister site GamesIndustry.
"There's a lot of people that go through that store and it's so easy to find and download these games that it's a great business model. A lot of people have already stored their credit card information so it's very frictionless if they do want to buy something.

NSP, you're preaching to the choir on that. I love the F2P model and have dumped tons of money into several games that utilize it. Having a F2P game and mobile apps, aside from traditional games, would help all publishers or major independent developers out a lot. Oh, and reducing the goddamn extreme costs going into game development.

Goddamn, Etrian Odyssey crashed and burned between launch week and this week. What the hell?!
Maybe the entire fanbase bought their copy on day one.
I'm just glad that Atlus isn't a company that's like, "WE NEED MILLIONS NAO!" They're probably fine with things selling steady over time. I guess the 3DS still isn't the hottest, biggest install base just yet. And I haven't paid attention to how much it's trending in Japan. I'm just paranoid these days that "NOT SELLING ENOUGH, FUCK IT" will catch on to all companies.
So it's not all that bad. Seems like it'll sell around the same amount as EO3, which was the previously best selling entry.
And IV is on a system with a smaller install base than III. So the numbers for IV aren't looking bad at all in that context.
I feel better now.

Thoughts on this weeks Media Create:
- Pokemon continue to dominate, which is no surprise. No matter how many iterations is produced, the franchise just continues to defy expectations on sales and popularity.
- Terry's Wonderland is also a sales surprise for me, and I really hope they localize it as I loved the first Dragon Quest Monsters.
- Ouch at Time Travelers. I really do want Nintendo to buy Level 5 out, as Nintendo could make fantastic use of some of their franchises. (Plus I really want Layton to be officially a first party franchise.)
- 3DS takes a small dip but still selling well, the Vita continues to flounder.

So it's not all that bad. Seems like it'll sell around the same amount as EO3, which was the previously best selling entry.
And IV is on a system with a smaller install base than III. So the numbers for IV aren't looking bad at all in that context.
I feel better now.
