- 3DS takes a small dip but still selling well, the Vita continues to flounder.
Well, summer is when things reach a low point in sales. October, things will start to spike, leading to the typical peak in December, and things will drop back down next year again.
Pretty weak week all around. Vita's a little stronger than it has been, but 13,000 still isn't much to crow about.
Meanwhile, the worm will turn.
Will there ever be another Earthworm Jim game?
It's a case of when, not if, David Perry, who founded Earthworm Jim creator Shiny Entertainment and programmed the first two games in the critically acclaimed 16-bit action platform series, told Eurogamer at the Develop conference in Brighton last week.
"Our problem is that the team is all doing well in whatever they're doing right now," Perry, boss of new Sony subsidiary Gaikai, said.
"It's just a bunch of guys who all have their own thing. Everyone has their own company. So, to get them to stop what they're doing and work on a game is very difficult, but it's something they all want to do.
"We have our own little discussion group on Facebook. We've been having this discussion: when will this happen? When could we do it? What would make sense?
"We feel the Kickstarter thing would have been fun just to see how much money could be raised out of a Kickstarter, because we would have put a lot of effort into the video, for example.
"It's one of those things that, no one's got the time right now. I'm sure it's going to happen, I just can't tell you exactly when."
...
So, what is Perry's vision for a new Earthworm Jim game?
"The thing we had talked about in the past is Jim had been in retirement," he told Eurogamer. "So, he's been sitting at home watching movies and eating popcorn. He's grossly overweight now. The plan was to start with him literally getting off the sofa, and it's a disaster because he just hasn't done anything since. But he's got to get back into action again."
Earthworm Jim creator Doug TenNapel had created sketches for this new game, showing a "wimpier" Jim. Perry isn't convinced of this direction.
"There's an interesting tension between Doug and myself. When he started to draw the new Earthworm Jim, if I showed you the sketches of what he wanted the next Earthworm Jim to look like, I can guarantee you'd go, no! Don't go that way! Because he's going wimpy. My job I to fight him on that. No, don't go wimpy. We don't want wimpy."
What he is sure of, though, is that any new Earthworm Jim game will be 2D. "2D by definition is just a camera moving with you. The answer is, I would do 2D, but if you wanted you could play with the camera a little. But I don't like it when you're doing very 3D, because then your jumps become very hard to predict and then your controller starts breaking. It wouldn't be fun."
Man, with all the craziness going on with smaller digital games lately Earthworm Jim would be a perfect fit there.

A new Earthworm Jim based on this:
"So, he's been sitting at home watching movies and eating popcorn. He's grossly overweight now. The plan was to start with him literally getting off the sofa, and it's a disaster because he just hasn't done anything since."
Would be goddamn fantastic. And it would be a perfect chance for them to ape on a lot of shit going on in the industry. That right there in the quote could goof on Max Payne 3, for example. Imagine an EWJ Splinter Cell: Conviction type scene.

Some interesting sales info from Japan:
Less than 800,000 PlayStation Vita units have been sold across Japan in the past six months, new data suggests.
A new look at sales of Sony's latest handheld - provided by Japanese magazine Famitsu - suggests that the system has sold about 790,000 units.
Sony Japan appears to have told Famitsu that the sales data is in line with internal projections, according to a translation of the quote by local media.
In March, Sony revealed it had sold about two million PS Vita units worldwide. Nintendo's 3DS handheld had shifted about 17 million units by the same period, though this rival system launched several months earlier.
The original PSP has sold more than 71 million units in its eight years on the market.
Meanwhile, hot release Persona 4 The Golden has managed to shift 189,000 units since its release on June 14th, quickly making it the best-selling PS Vita game in Japan for the year so far.
Also something else I noticed on the media create is that Resistance Vita....it did terribly. I guess Sony's Decision to not continue with the series was a good one.
Anyway, for me the key factor in any new EWJ concept is one thing:Tommy Tallarico. God his music was great in those first two games.
Also getting someone to burp the name of the title.

Art assets from Runic Games' Torchlight franchise bear more than a passing resemblance to those used in iOS MMO Armed Heroes Online, from Chinese developer Entertainment Game Labs ("EGLS"). And Runic Games head Travis Baldree is calling foul, taking to Twitter this week to say, "So, wow - this game is releasing on the app store. They wholesale stole most of the assets from Torchlight," and linking to the EGLS game website.
Baldree made the image seen above as well, comparing the two games' art assets from source material he found in YouTube clips of Armed Heroes Online with those of his company's game. Beyond talking, Baldree tells us that Runic "have contacted Apple with a takedown request but haven't heard back yet." The company's goal at the moment is "simply to get the game removed from the App Store until it no longer infringes upon our copyright." It's unclear if representatives from Runic's parent company, Chinese MMO company Perfect World, have been in contact with EGLS separately.
Baldree says Runic "have been unable to directly contact the company," but a rep from EGLS posted on Touch Arcade's forums with a lengthy public statement today. "We can hardly agree with Mr. Travis Baldree who judged that EGLS 'wholesale stole most of the assets from Torchlight!' only based on the similarity between several small monsters. The judgment is simply untenable," the post reads.
It goes on to say that some EGLS employees "are both crazy game fans and ecstatic movie lovers," alleging that the comparisons drawn are nothing more than an accident at best. Bizarrely, the statement then compares Torchlight to WildTangent's PC RPG Fate, as well as Diablo 2 – both games that Runic employees were instrumental in developing.
Armed Heroes Online remains available via iTunes for now, but we don't expect it'll be there for much longer. The game is free-to-play with in-app purchases (read: microtransactions). An EGLS rep didn't respond to request for comment as of publishing.

This pretty much happened tho.
Bullshit, the Breath of Fire series fought it good and hard. Etrian Odyssey doesn't buy into ATC either. Actually, I'm pretty sure ATV has been limited to Square games mostly.
ATV, yes, but we're talking about active time combat which is something else as far as I'm concerned. Turn based combat RPGs are few and far between these days.

Isn't that pretty much the "Johnny Bravo goes to Hollywood" movie?
After an initial investigation into whether or not THQ misled its investors about the demand for its uDraw tablet – and a subsequent lawsuit – shareholders have filed another lawsuit against the beleaguered publisher, reports GamesIndustry. The class action suit has been filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California by New York law firm Levi & Korsinsky on behalf of THQ shareholders. The complaint alleging that THQ "misrepresented or failed to disclose" that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of uDraw were not selling and, thus, THQ "lacked a reasonable basis for their positive statements" about its current condition.
As GI points out, this is the second such lawsuit that THQ has faced in as many months. Shareholders wishing to join the suit may do so by filling out a form on the Levi & Korsinsky website.

New York law firm Levi and Korsinsky has filed a class action lawsuit against troubled publisher THQ, claiming it misled shareholders over its uDraw peripheral.
"The complaint alleges that THQ and certain of its executive officers issued false or misleading statements concerning the Company," said documents the documents filed by the firm.
"Specifically, it is alleged that defendants misrepresented or failed to disclose that: (a) the Company's uDraw GameTablet ("uDraw") for Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 was not being purchased by owners of those gaming systems; (b) because demand for uDraw was below internal expectations, the Company would have to take back, or provide price protection, on hundreds of thousands of units that it had sold; and (c) as a result of the foregoing, defendants lacked a reasonable basis for their positive statements about the Company and its prospects."
The lawsuit is open, at no fee, to any stockholders who bought THQ stock between May 3, 2011 and February 3, 2012.
THQ is already facing a similar class-action lawsuit from shareholder rights firm Robbins Umeda LLP, accusing it of "materially false and misleading statements."

uDraw is the gift that keeps on giving.
Yeesh, I am starting to actually feel bad for the company. But if they had just been smarter about the product, the marketing, and doing some research into who would actually use that thing, they may not be in the situation they are now.

I'm confused about something though.
Wasn't the original uDraw on the Wii and didn't it do pretty well?
Surprised that they would switch consoles like that. Maybe they thought people wouldn't buy the sequel on the Wii if they already had the original.

I'm sorry but the stock market is all about risk. Your money is yours to handle. If people bought into the typical "We're gonna kick ass!" sales pitch and lose money, it's their own damn fault. What, are people going to sue casinos when they come away with less money than they had going in? Give me a break.

Yep, it did pretty decently on Wii. Problem is that it didn't occur to Ubisoft that perhaps the audiences for the Wii, 360 and PS3 are a wee bit different.

Yeah. This suit does sound BS. But really, even if it gets thrown or THQ wins that's money they have to spend on litigation.

I'd say when they dump all the leftover stock in some desert in New Mexico, but even then I think all the concentrated trouble might only evolve to form some kind of evil entity of its own, sort of like THQ's personal Draw-Tak.
Jokes aside, the bolded part seems pretty much par for the course when it comes to failed projects - it's all absolutely fine and dandy until it's not, then all of a sudden it's shit, and out of fear for facing the shit head on (and the angry stockholders with it) the company takes the only route it can by denying the problem entirely. I guess they hoped to sweep it all under the rug and let the uDraw go quietly into the night, but as evidenced by these recent events, it's come back to chew their ass some more.
Wanna bet the stockholders are choosing to sue THQ at this point in time because they think there won't be a company to get any money from shortly?
Alright and in this next scene all the animals have AIDS.
To be fair, it sounds like they're accusing them of being deliberately misleading, not simply being overly optimistic. One of those is dandy, the other is a valid target.

The sphere of failure that's projected from the stock would merge with the one currently still projected by the remnants of the ET cartridges out there and create some sort of singularity that will tear space-time.

He would be a fat worm and not in a suit.

Ah, uDraw. When will you ever stop causing problems for THQ?
Yeesh, I am starting to actually feel bad for the company. But if they had just been smarter about the product, the marketing, and doing some research into who would actually use that thing, they may not be in the situation they are now.

This lawsuit is bullshit. "WE SHAREHOLDERS ARE GOING TO GET OUR MONEY ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!" Yes, punish an entire company over a single product. Jesus jumped up Christ.
Wasn't the original uDraw on the Wii and didn't it do pretty well?
Surprised that they would switch consoles like that. Maybe they thought people wouldn't buy the sequel on the Wii if they already had the original.
Yep, it did pretty decently on Wii. Problem is that it didn't occur to Ubisoft that perhaps the audiences for the Wii, 360 and PS3 are a wee bit different.
I got a little excited when I saw your ship.
The sphere of failure that's projected from the stock would merge with the one currently still projected by the remnants of the ET cartridges out there and create some sort of singularity that will tear space-time.
Probably.
Uh... They're Communists.
The people, at least.
Yeah. While THQ has made actual mistakes regarding it being in hard times, this is completely unfair that they have to put up with this.
