I wish Caneghem would go back to the Heroes/Might and Magic franchise. Heroes 3 is still one of the most addictive games ever made.

You know, I bought and played C&C4, but only out of a sense of wanting closure to the story.

I think the series peaked with 3/Kane's Wrath.

Can't say I'm too surprised. Zero Hour's "campaign" was a series of skirmishes on maps that favored that General's strengths.

The crazy thing about the Generals 2 nonsense is that they originally heavily hyped the game up with the whole "BioWare brings their expertise in storytelling to C&C" angle, and then they cut the single player. Good job there, EA.

  • KingofMadCowsKingofMadCows Registered User regular
If Generals 2 does have a story, it probably won't even be that different than the original C&C's story since that game already dealt with most of the themes in modern day military games. You have the pseudoreligious bad guys with a cult like following. A decentralized enemy force that draws support from areas of the world that have historically been taken advantage of by western nations. Use of terrorism to spread fear and economic turmoil. Conspiracies involving power corporations. Manipulation of the media to sway public support on military action. Fight over resource rich third world countries.

Are they sticking with the 3 factions idea or going back to two sides duking it out?

At least it can't be any worse then the C&C web game, or the Ultima one for that matter.

The sp campaign was a casualty of the F2P nonsense.

Speaking of porting from the PS3 to the Vita:
Platinum Games' hack and slash spin-off, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, won't be appearing on Playstation Vita due to worries about the console's power.

Kojima Productions creative producer Yuji Korekado told Eurogamer that there were reservations over whether Sony's handheld would be able to cope with the game's free cutting system, which allows players to slice enemies anyway they choose.

"As of now we aren't considering a Vita version," he said. "The reason is one of the main appeals of Metal Gear Rising is this option of the free cut. That requires a lot of hardware power, which is only possible with the power of a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

"So as of now, we haven't contemplated bringing it to handheld consoles."

The free cut mechanic is set to be an integral part of the game, with challenges being included that task players to be selective in how they incapacitate enemies.

Korekado explained, "We know some previous Metal Gear titles there have been some challenges, like having no kills, complete stealth. We are putting challenges in the game. For example, there is one challenge where you have to go through the game just by defeating the enemies dealing the least amount of damage possible, perhaps by cutting just one limb."

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/08/21/no-metal-gear-rising-on-vita-due-to-power-concerns

It's starting to sound like there's a LOT of work and compromises involved in going from PS3 to Vita. Given how risk and effort-adverse most publishers are nowadays it's looking a little unlikely we'll see many third-party crossplay titles.

Shuhei Yoshida believes PS3 is in “prime time,” therefore a price cut is not needed nor expected this year, says Sony’s head of Worldwide Studios.

Speaking with Eurogamer at gamescom, Yoshida said with the bevy of titles coming to the system, it was a “great time” for consumers to purchase console.

“We are very happy with where we are in terms of PS3: the services, games, and the pricing included,” Yoshida said. “So, there’s no plan for any change we can talk about.”

Consumers shouldn’t expect a new PS3 model this year either, Yoshida said rumors of the super-slim PS3-4000 were only that: “a rumor.”

...apparently "video games are one of our three pillars going forward" translates to "no price drops EVER."

Meanwhile Prey 2 is massively delayed or possibly cancelled.
Prey 2 is no longer listed on Bethesda’s website. Following a new site design that launched late last week, Bethesda’s Games page has been updated to reflect the publisher’s upcoming titles. Prey 2 isn’t included as one of them, despite its presence on the previous version of the site.

We reached out to Bethesda about the title’s absence.“Since we had already announced it wasn’t coming out this year and we don’t have anything new to say on the game at this time, we simply didn’t think it’d be appropriate to include it on the new site launch,” a Bethesda spokesperson told IGN. “We chose instead to focus on the upcoming titles we are talking about.”

Prey 2 was originally announced in 2011, slated at the time for release in 2012. Earlier this year, rumors began to circulate that the game was in danger of being canceled, but Bethesda quickly debunked the rumor, saying the game had simply been delayed beyond 2012. “The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards,” a statement said at the time.

A more specific release window for Prey 2 hasn’t been revealed, but it’s worth noting that the list of titles on Bethesda’s site does include The Elder Scrolls Online, which isn't scheduled to be released until 2013. Other games in Bethesda’s upcoming line-up are Doom 3 BFG Edition and Dishonored.

Sleeping Dogs Steals Top Spot In UK Debut Week
Sleeping Dogs is in the midst of setting the international charts on fire, particularly the UK charts on which this Hong Kong GTA-styled police adventure has supplanted even Nintendo's own New Super Mario Bros. 2 for Nintendo 3DS.

    1. Sleeping Dogs
    2. New Super Mario Bros. 2
    3. London 2012: The Official Video Game
    4. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
    5. Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympics Games
    6. Batman: Arkham City
    7. The Amazing Spider-Man
    8. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
    9. Dead Island: GOTY Edition
    10. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7

This is an incredible achievement, given that Activision decided to break its relationship with United Front Games during the game's production, forcing the developer to pitch its half-made title to publishers and thanking the stars when Square Enix stepped in where Activision left off.

Good on the Sleeping Dogs guys, it looks like its a great game and a lot of fun.

    Interesting stuff from Iwata:
Unintimidated By Apple, Nintendo’s Boss Says The World Still Needs Dedicated Gaming Handhelds
    -Stephen Totilo

Iwata and I spoke for about 45 minutes last week, his answers translated from Japanese to English during a chat that wound up being one-third dedicated to the future of dedicated handhelds.

    ...

"I think that if we are able to provide experiences on handheld devices that consumers cannot get on another device, then we will continue creating software and hardware going forward, and if it comes to a point when we're not able to do that, I think, yeah, you will see portable handheld gaming devices go the way of the Dodo, I guess."

    ...

"I think a lot of this discussion is based on the premise that the handheld gaming device market is shrinking or vanishing and I don't think that is true and I'd like to address that," he said. He turned to his MacBook Air as he began to cite some stats.

    ...

"As of last week, 3DS sales in Japan reached seven million, and that's the 77th week post-launch. If we look at DS and DS Lite which people were saying, ‘oh my gosh this thing is selling like hotcakes, it's crazy!' it reached the seven million mark at week 72. And for the Nintendo DS that was two Christmases. For the 3DS it's only been one Christmas. And we also had a large earthquake in Japan. And of course now there's a smartphone boom in Japan, we're right in the middle of it. [Note from Stephen: The Nintendo 3DS has sold 19 million units worldwide since launch, as of late June.]

    ...

"I don't think there's not a bright future for handheld devices but I understand that the competition, again with the rise of smart devices is different, and I do recognize that.

    ...

"I think within games you have two needs that people fill. One is the time-filler need. The other is that it's a very important time for me and I want to have a rich experience. Those are two separate needs, I think." His implication was that Nintendo handheld gaming satisfied the latter need in a way that smartphone gaming typically did not.

"The other thing is how much are consumers willing to pay to play. I think that consumers who are willing to pay money for a gaming experience are looking for something that is more rich and are willing to spend some of that valuable time on that experience. I believe that as environments change and as the world progresses we're going to have different ways in which people want to spend their time. That being said, I don't think we're going to see the desire to have, again, rich and deep sort of gaming experiences... we're not going to see that vanish. That's not going to go away."

This was inevitable, but it still feels like a part of my childhood has died. :(
Gamers of a certain age likely remember the days when their main fix of information about new and upcoming video games came in the form of the monthly Nintendo Power magazine that was delivered directly to their mailbox. That experience is set to become yet another relic of a past era, as Ars Technica has learned that Future Publishing is planning to stop publishing the magazine.

Nintendo Power is one of the longest-running game magazines in the country, having been published continuously since the summer of 1988, when it started as a bi-monthly outgrowth of the previous Nintendo Fun Club newsletter. Nintendo produced and distributed the magazine (with articles that were often just thinly veiled marketing copy) from 1989 through late 2007, when it started contracting the brand out for a more independent angle from tech-and-game-focused Future Publishing.

But our source says that Nintendo, which was always "difficult to work with," was uninterested in renewing that contract or in taking part in a number of digital initiatives that Future saw as necessary for the long-term health of the brand. He added that Nintendo doesn't seem interested in taking over direct control of the magazine again (Nintendo and Future representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this story).

Nintendo Power editors and staffers were told of the magazine's impending shuttering last week, the source said, and are currently being transitioned to work on other Future properties, including GamesRadar and MacLife magazine. The move should not affect Future's other gaming magazines, which include official periodicals for the PlayStation and Xbox brands, as well as Best Buy's @Gamer.

It's unclear exactly how many more issues of Nintendo Power are planned after the recently published August issue (its 281st), or how current subscribers will be compensated. Nintendo Power enjoys a total monthly readership of 475,000, according to Future press materials.

Nintendo Power's shuttering comes during a time of continuing struggles for the US magazine industry, which saw overall circulation numbers decline 10 percent in the first half of 2012. Gamers have increasingly come to rely on online sources for more timely and less space-limited gaming coverage, leading the venerable GamePro magazine to stop publishing late last year after 23 years in print.

A little bird told me that Funcom has laid off around 50-60% of their employees world wide today.

Good goddamn. Is Funcom doing anything besides Secret World or what?

Age of Conan, which apparently has been turning a decent profit at little effort after becoming F2P. Anarchy Online is probably still going, too.

Hm. So I guess pegging it on Secret World is pretty accurate, unless Conan and Anarchy have been quietly dropping too.

Reading that thread, it seems the big complaint is the same thing over and over (and was exactly the same complaint I had).

It's a great singleplayer game shoehorned into being an MMO. Like, I could actually see it possible to move some things around and turn it into one in reality.

That's great for box sales and the free month, but terrible for a subscription model. I don't regret buying the game, but I don't regret not getting very far and not subbing either.

Edit: And if they actually had a single player version I would pay the box price again in a nanosecond. The game suffered because of it's model (mmo or subscription, take your pick) not because of it's content.

Edit2: I should say I actually LIKE the subscription model, it's easier to manage for me in every way, and I don't have to pick and choose content through some dumb company store. But I recognize the sub model is becoming almost impossible to use successfully outside of one or two games, and I'd rather see it done away with than another fourteen failed MMOs over the next couple years.

An internal memo attributed to THQ president Jason Rubin sent yesterday to staff outlines plans for layoffs in the publisher's marketing team and desire to boost development. The letter, published by 3D Realms founder George Broussard, notes the marketing and production staff will be cut by "20 individuals."

"It is worth pointing out that none of the development teams are effected, and we do not anticipate the reduction to have any impact whatsoever on the titles in production or the future scale of our output," wrote Rubin. "It is also quite likely that in the long run the company will hire new individuals with different skill sets in their stead. To put this in perspective, Volition alone anticipates growing by about 20 individuals in the next 12 months."

Rubin says the change represents a resource shift from oversight to production, and from centralization out to the development studios. He also notes that the two departments affected by the cuts were "largely unaffected" by the January layoffs.

We've reached out to THQ for a statement on the memo.

I kinda wanted it to do well, just because the setting was interesting. Lovecraftian video games always seem to crash and burn. Combat was terrible and the story and quests would be boring after your first play through though.
