I've gotta say I'm getting pretty fucking tired of the Spider-Man origin story

they seriously do not need to re-hash this shit every time they want to bring in a new actor/director

there have been 22 James Bond films and his origin has been shown exactly one time

and Spider-Man is a far more well-known character

  • GatsbyGatsby Registered User regular
Yeah I was hoping this movie would take the same route as the Incredible Hulk and get it over and done with in the opening credits. I was still entertained at least, it's not like they screwed it up or anything.

I'm kind of upset about this movie. they had spider-man, and it was good, then some suits ruined it while still making a bundle and that was fine because they can always reboot it.

would it have been that hard to make the last scene of spider man 3 be eddy brock in the church? no

    1. The first two Spider-man movies are not very good.

    2. If it had ended there then Spider-man 3 would have still been a terrible movie that would scare anyone from watching 4.

The first two are super fun and campy with fantastic antagonists (green goblin's suit is still dumb though)

See when I think fun I think jokes and levity and those movies are the opposite of that.

They are dry, campy and dry. And I posit that while the actors for both villains are fantastic both are written dumbly. One has absolutely no plan whatsoever and spends the entire movie trying to make the protagonist miserable for no reason and the other involves a sentient A.I. that takes over his head and makes him create a machine that will destroy the world(or New York, I forget).

Man was the Lizard any better?

I liked the antagonists in the other films way more than the Lizard in this.

No. I'm not saying he is though. He claimed that the first two movies had great antagonists and I made a counter argument. The thing is that I don't feel that this movie has a flaw that the others didn't really possess but feel they improved on them in a number of really obvious ways.
honestly, except for Lex Luthor, Superman's villains aren't that memorable

but it would be neat to see him punch a giant robot at least once in live action

Brainiac, Metallo, Parasite and (for a very unorthedox movie) Mr M. are both memorable and would be visually interesting. Lex has to be in the movie and that's fine but the dude does need someone to punch.
they should do somebody totally unexpected

    like Vandal Savage

The worlds most powerful man against its oldest and wisest.

The man of the past vs. the Man of Tomorrow.

    I love it.

Save the smart gorrilla's for Flash though.

I am rarely disappointed by films.

Somebody tried to dissuade me from watching Thor

I interrupted them midsentence with the question, "Doe Thor hit stuff with his hammer?"

they said yes, and then I walked into the theater.

He also gets hit by a truck and drinks a scientist into the ground.

    I fucking love Thor.

There is a very large part of me that just wants to see my childhood heroes moving around and punching shit like they do in the comics.

I love story. I was an English major. I know how to read subtext, and I am delighted when someone does something emotionally interesting with a superhero

but when we get right down to it, if dudes get punched, I am not liable to leave that theater unhappy.

And that's exactly why The Avengers is so good.

    yes and no

there was a Casino Royale made in 1969 but it bears very little resemblance to the Fleming book, and it's not an official entry into the series

it's basically a batshit crazy acid trip movie, not really worth watching unless you're far too into Bond films (like me)

but most importantly for this point, it didn't actually address Bond's origin

for that matter, neither did the 1954 television version of Casino Royale

only Casino Royale 2006 has done that

Avengers isn't deep but it is hardly uninteresting story-wise. The plot is by the numbers but the fact that they have five main characters all of which have equal time and a complete and emotionally satisfying character arc is nothing short of impressive.

You know taking all the air out of a room wouldn't knock him out. He'd still have plenty of time to grab that mask.

More importantly he wouldn't show himself until he had a powersuit capable of matching him and some Kryptonite.

    Eh.

While I agree with shorty that origin stories can drag, and two out of the four movies made in the past 12 years have been origin ones, it felt to me that without Martin sheen in there the movie would have fallen apart.

  • Undead ScottsmanUndead Scottsman Registered User regular
The real shit will hit the fan if Marvel reaquires the rights. They'd really REALLY want to reboot it to fit into the MCU, but they may not be able to get away with it.

Then again, they could just pull an Incredible Hulk. "Here's a well edited five minute clip showing the bare essentials of how the Hulk started."

  • GatsbyGatsby Registered User regular
To a certain extent I agree, him and Andrew Garfield did well keeping the origin story interesting enough for me to not want it over sooner.

  • nightmarennynightmarenny Registered User regular
Considering that they are at best getting the rights back in 10 or 20 year I doubt people will care.

You know I was actually pretty impressed with how Martin Sheen and Sally Fields handled their roles. I never actually felt any emotional attachment with Uncle Ben in the previous trilogy and the same with Aunt May aside from a few choice moments. This time around I really cared for them, more than I had over the course of three films.

Okay, I'm completely confused on what I'm supposed to be buying for the annihilation series. Looking at the wikipedia page, I should be grabbing

Annihilation ($45, missing two mini-series and 1 one shot)
-The Drax the Destroyer miniseries (not available on Comixology)
-Annihilation Prologue (Including in Annihilation Book 1 for $9)
-Annihilation: Nova (Also in Book 1)
-Annihilation: Ronan ($8 for individual issues)
-Annihilation: Silver Surfer ($8 for individual issues)
-Annihilation: Super-Skrull ($8 for individual issues)
-Annihilation: The Nova Corps Files (Not on Comixology)
    -Annihilation ($12 for individual issues)
-Annihilation: Heralds Of Galactus (Not on Comixology)

    Annihilation: Conquest ($51, missing 1 one-shot)
    -Annihilation: Conquest - Prologue ($2)
-Annihilation: Conquest - Quasar ($8 for individual issues)
-Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord ($8 for individual issues)
    -Annihilation: Saga (Not on Comixology)
-Annihilation: Conquest - Wraith ($8 for individual issues)
    -Nova Vol. 1: Annihilation - Conquest ($13)
-Annihilation: Conquest ($12 for individual issues)

    Your list looks good.
The Drax miniseries is included in Book 1.
The Nova Corps files are 1-page wikipedia article style information about the characters in the story that are spread throughout all 3 books. They're neat when you don't know a lot about cosmic, but not essential to the story.
So you're really only missing Heralds of Galactus and Saga. And Saga is just a summary of the Annihilation event before you start on Annihilation-Conquest.

There will likely be awesome trades and omnibi to tie in with the movie, but do you really want to wait 2 years?
Man, I can see why the trades are so expensive on the secondary market now :P

Yeah, but that's 3 books in Annihilation, 2 books in Annihilation-Conquest and 1 book in Nova
Six large trades for 90$ isn't bad

So I'm trying to think of parts I didn't like in this movie
I thought the line the line about promises at the end was kind poorly worded, I mean the point came across but whatever

peter bending the goal post with the ball was dumb (and wouldn't the ball have just popped first?) he should have just beaned a dude in the head with it

peter also loved taking his mask off for no reason, it made sense for the kid in the van but post-lizard why would you run around your high school in the tights but no mask

I remember being bothered by another line that I felt was important and should have been worded better, I think it was something about power and responsibility post uncle ben dying? But I forget so it must not have been that bad

edit: oh also the lizard personality thing, I mean I understand the idea they are pushing that the lizard magnified the more zealous mad-scientisty parts of connors but (to me) it kind of felt like the Doc Oc arms thing where MAN DOES SCIENCE -> MAN SUFFERS FROM HIS HUBRIS and just kind of glosses over how being a lizard man (or having robot arms) suddenly makes MAN amoral

and the story could have been tighter I guess? I dunno I'm not a good story/writing/film critic

I really really liked this movie though, and thought as a whole it was very well done even if it could have been improved

    So, back to Marvel Now.

Implying, well, multiple new Gillen titles.

    $153 on Amazon right now.

Which isn't too bad given how much you get gouged on 3D versions of movies.

    EDIT: For comparison, on Amazin

    Iron Man 1 Disc Blu-Ray: $15
    Iron Man 2 1 Disc Blu-Ray: $15
    Incredible Hulk: $14
    Thor Blu-Ray/3D: $31
    Captain America Blu-Ray/3D: $32
    Avengers Blu-Ray/3D: $30

So $137 if you were to try and get them all seperately. Really good deal when you look at it like that.

Though I'm mostly getting it for the case/documents/bonus disc. :D
