the reveal about how there are multiple iterations of the Matrix does sound similar to the Ragnorak cycle idea. Thor being an unpredictable element as a result of his experience as a mortal in this cycle is also similar to how Neo became an unstable element due to him being in love. Both the Ragnorak cycle and the Matrix reboot were broken due to that instability. They both died as a result. Although, Thor actually came back while it was only hinted that Neo would return.
Although, the Ragnarok cycle does raise a lot of questions like, how often does it happen, is today's Thor the same as the one during the time when Norse mythology was created, did the Asgardians journey to the other realms in past cycles, did the Asgardians even have worshipers in past cycles, etc.
Considering how it was the influence of the mortal world that broke the cycle, that would suggest the previous cycles did not have influence from outside of Asgard.
Although, I do like the idea of gods feeding on the power of other gods like a divine food chain.
The Ragnarok thing actually reminded me quite a bit of the Mass Effect 3 ending.
A glowy child explaining that it's all been done in a cycle, but how that's broken now because of the Main Dude's actions. I don't recall a lot of details about that story, but I played it post Mass Effect 3 and was stunned at how similar it was.

Almost too similar...
Its not exactly fresh ground plotwise.
Though in Mass effects case it was made explicitly clear by the time you finish the first game that some other hero threw a wrench in the mix mix and you're batting clean up.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

an absolutely spot-on (and spoiler filled) look at Journey Into Mystery and how it tweaks the whole "Illusion of Change" deal:

this part in particular blew my mind as I hadn't considered that the characters were referring to/talking to us, before:
(again, JIM 645 spoilers)
Kid Loki goes to oblivion saying just that. He won, because he got to change. The Old Loki won’t. No, I will, Old Loki says, and Kid Loki replies, “They won’t let you”.
Who? Not the other characters – that’s the story we’ve just been reading, about people who do (in the end) let Loki change. Who are “they”? The executives, the audience, the readers, the creators, all of the above. Sooner or later when Journey Into Mystery is safely filed away at #4 on a list of cult classics of the 2010s, or more likely before, someone will want to use the Old Loki unthinkingly, as a trope of villainy, a moustache-twirler in a horny hat. And they will, and Kid Loki will have won. Not the best of victories really. As Loki says, at the end, looking straight out at us through his newly hateful child’s eyes, “Damn you all.”
And from this perspective, Loki in Young Avengers struggling against the nature of the medium itself and its resistance to change is just so delightfully meta that I am even more excited about the book now.

Perhaps the Asgardian gods are bound by the beliefs of their worshipers after all.

That review sums up a lot of the reasons why some of my favorite comic book characters from the big two are relatively younger or newer ones like Cassandra Cain, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, the Avengers Academy kids like X-23, Reptil, Striker, etc. Because they're not slaves to the expectations of fans or DC/Marvel and actually have the potential for major character arcs and changes. Of course, it just pisses me off even more when DC/Marvel screws them up or don't exploit that potential.
Somehow I didn't realize that was the same link. Sorry.
Anyway, its like what Chris Claremont told me when I said I didn't like Reed's Ms. Marvel. He said that was fine because eventually someone will come along and change her, and then that will be undone by someone else.
I appreciate the new characters' lack of baggage, but I am capricious in who I like, especially now when I follow creators and not characters save for one or two exceptions.
That is brilliant and insightful, yet wonderfully innocent as well.
Kid Loki will forever dwell in twilight. We will always doubt whether he is truly gone but if he is brought back, even if it's by Gillen, we will doubt if it's truly him. A god who "lives" in the doubts of his worshipers, that is rather fitting for Loki.

It also helps that he loves talking to fans and is very vocal about all of his work.
