Is there good sov war action going on right now? Or is it just shooting stations and such?
A little from column A, a little from column B.
If you ignore column B, there's probably huge sov war fleet battles every day in various timezones. Maybe a good one every 2-3 days in GSF?
Other people are also having wars that aren't all up in the news sites as well.
TDS coalition (which I am in) has been having a shooting war with the Stain RUS brigade for a couple of months now, and we're seeing regular engagements with 400+ in local on a near daily basis very much on a "win some lose some" basis.
The Unthinkables along with Darkspawn and a couple of other minor players have been beating the shit out of Red Alliance for the last few weeks.
Basically everything from Fountain to Scalding Pass is pretty much on fire.
EDIT: OH and I forgot: 401K are marauding through Tribute.
So apparently I slept through TEST unleashing their devastating new superweapon - a sympathetic CCP Dev rebooting the node to left them escape. Well.
Don't be silly. It was a simple fuckup for which CCP have unreservedly apologised. They were trying to reduce the load on the node so you could kill TEST faster.
tl;dr is that CCP shut down every system on the node other than QP99, so all the node's resources could go to the system where the fight was happening. Problem: the fight was happening in Z9PP, so it got shut down too.
I just got an e-mail for the new update. The exploration changes look interesting... enough to maybe come back for a bit.
What's the general setup for someone exploring now? I have a covops sitting somewhere, I believe, but I recall having trouble finding sites that I could access without leaving and bringing back a larger ship...

I am curious the perspective of TEST / Goons people on Mad Ani's stream of there fights / stagging area 24/7.. I figure that's a pretty fine line of Spying / reporting type of thing.

Well Mad Ani is showing both sides at the same time so it's fair really. In some ways it might be spurring both sides on to fight more, which is always good.

I am fully aware of the real story, I just thought it was funny. We still managed to skullfuck a good chunk of their capitals. A baltecfleet I was in yesterday went 1 v 4 for an hour before Tidi would let reinforcements arrive, and we still came out ahead.
The rotting husk that used to be TEST is horribad.
The changes to exploration seem good. Data and Relic sites not spawning enemies unless you fuck up fits what I wanted pretty well. I'll have to start scanning around high/low-sec to see how profitable this ends up being.
The system scanner... the one that triggers when you enter a system... is simultaneously cool as hell and yet seems ultimately useless. Since I'll have to use the scanner interface to find any relic, data, or gas sites. I wish it could be the effect when you are running scan probes instead. As it is seems you just end up in the map/scan interface anyway, moving your probe formation around. Also, when I first enter a system, my priority is seeing if I am in danger or not. Not watching the horizon for possible scan targets. Still, looks awesome. I guess for people running complexes it might be nice.

Well INIT. (or rather: the INIT family since that includes IM as well) is rather bigger than it used to be, and we can get 200-250 in fleet when we really want to, with a high proportion of high SP, well funded members. We're an old alliance and we've been through all this a few times before, and we stick together. The coaltion is basically a defensive arrangement since it was pretty obvious that we had to stand together or the Stain russians would easily overwhelm us.
If & when INIT. lose our space then it's no biggie; we'll just get some more somewhere else as we have several times already. But we do like shooting at russians. The RUS have almost entirely focused on chipping away the alliances they see as the weaker links of the coalition, who don't have the longstanding bonds that INIT have and don't have the 0.0 campaign experience. So far morale seems to be fairly good and we've won quite a few fights. Last weekend the RUS were making the running; the weekend before we were making gains, and so it goes. (we've focused on moonsl they've focused on space). And I've been pleasantly surprised by the commitment to the fight that Unclaimed have shown, they're bringing really good numbers. It can be a bit wearing trying to educate them on the finer points of 0.0 fleet procedures, but we're getting there.
They've made some progress taking some systems in Esoteria, and to be honest, they probably want the space more than we do. I more or less expect them to take it in the end, but that might be just wishful thinking on my part - I much prefer living in NPC space and I'd be happy if we went back to Curse tomorrow. On the other hand, they might find defending space is somewhat harder than attacking it from a safe base in NPC, and we reach some sort of equilibrium. Both are fine outcomes as far as I'm concerned.
We'll see if Grath's *star power* gets more TEST to log in.

I don't know; he was saying something about INIT had "turned into something I don't like", whatever that means. As far as I can see we're pretty much the same. Maybe Bliss was mean to Grath's spy alt or something.
Anyway Grath has a much more visible and justified target to focus his angry on now...
So does anyone have any tips in starting a career in cross region trade? It seems simple enough to me - goto one region, see what the prices of several items are, then go back and check the other region. Buy low / sell high as you see it. Anything else to know?
There are websites that track this stuff, but they're mostly out of date and/or being manipulated for scams by the time you view them. I made my first 100M pretty fast as a newbie doing cross region trade before I moved to Deklein to live with MRCHI (to discover that 100M is peanuts). I made characters to scout the markets in Amarr, Jita, and Dodixie, and used a frigate to transport low volume semi-expensive goods (mostly rigs); stuff that richer, more serious traders won't bother with. Just be careful of scam orders.
Only problem with trading rigs is the prices of salvage and rigs hasn't stabilized since the introduction of capital sized rigs in June. You may suffer losses if you don't take care, time for Spreadsheets in Space. HiSec ganking of industrials can be a problem if you are trading cross-region. Fortunately/Unfortunately the fail gankers I've encountered get taken out by CONCORD and you don't get any Killboard credits. You do get kill rights which can be fun when you are bored with trading. My current ship has claimed a number of gankers but I've never lost an industrial or transport ship. That doesn't mean I'm invincible, it just reflects on how bad the gankers have been in the trade hubs.
What makes trading difficult is when you enter a market where your opponents doesn't care how low they drive the price to get a sale. Some people will undercut the going price by a fraction of an isk and other people will cut their sale price in 1% to 10% increments. I'll accept low profit margins (e.g. 5%) and drop the sale price in large increments and that can really upsets the fractional ISK traders. Every now and then you get comments or complaints in local which is good for the LOLs. Sometimes they're so upset they place trivial bounties. I assume your're meant to be upset or worried by a piddling 100,000 ISK bounty. I couldn't give a stuff about such trivial bounties. I'm only a small, not very serious trader so turnover is only in the Billions of ISK per month. I've started trading a couple of times with 30m ISK and build it up to a billion ISK in a couple of months. Admitidly I have the Tycoon Trading skill to help sell many different items across HiSec but that is not mandatory.
Trade across all regions and you have a better chance of maximising your profits. If you are buying Rigs or modules on market you do need to find the source to get the lowest price. This might not be from Jita.
Ok so I like the exploration changes. I got me a few million isk worth of stuff in the .8 system I was running missions in. Found a few more sites nearby after I dropped that off, then got greedy and snuck into a .4 system, and was promptly blown up trying to hack a data site.
So, normal day in EVE, really.
There's no plan, there's no race to be run
The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
So, avoided low-sec today (my initial foray showed that my hacking skill wasn't up to low-sec sites anyway).
But just flying around in 0.6-0.8 space near my 'homebase' netted me quite a few Data and Relic sites (and one gas site that I ignored). I figure between them I got maybe 15-20 million worth of decryptors alone, not to mention raw mats, a few blueprint copies, etc...
Honestly I could have kept going, there were systems nearby I hadn't checked, but it was getting late. I think I like this a lot. Obviously it's not the obscene sums of money that you get from high-level missions or null-sec mining, etc... But it's a start, it seems to be sustainable, and for me at least it's super fun.

Just curious, what kind of ship/fit do you fly? I've been considering a Gallante Vexor fit for scanning, but I'm curious if there is a better option.
I'm just running around in a Probe, since I only have Minmatar stuff trained up. (working on the other races when I can for versatility) The only really expensive stuff in my setup is the rigs (not sure I really need them) and the cloak (mostly for peace of mind in case I dip into low-sec). It's a super cheap setup, once you have the skills in place.
Either way I've paid for it several times over tonight.

I feel like I'm nearly ready for nullsec. I haven't learned a bunch of bad habits yet I don't think.
What kind of skills should I aim for before I make the leap? I don't want to end up sitting in station all day because I'm only good for one thing and that thing isn't needed right this second.
Whats the PvE like, how do you make isk in nullsec, and should I be able to fly a certain ship before I attempt it?

I am also in this same boat, was curious if theirs like a basic guideline for skill sets... Let Tackler needs [this list at least] to be useful. Miner needs [x list] to be useful mining in null sec ETC.
It dawns on me I obviously can't just move my stuff out there.. I've read its recommended to basically pod yourself out there. Though once out there, How does one go about getting ships and such, is there a decent market? How much ISK should I have saved.. etc.

Don't forget to set up a Jump Clone back in High-Sec :P
My nullsec experience was a few years ago and I haven't gotten around to re-applying to Merch yet because I want to get my hack/archeology skills up to snuff before I even think of heading down, but it really depends on what you want to do.
Combat: You probably want to be at least able to tackle for people, if not fly a larger ship. PVE when I played was mostly belt rats, though there may be more options now with Exploration combat sites. T2 weapons and tank are the name of the game. You probably want a Battlecruiser or Battleship. But loot and bounties on belt rats can be pretty decent.
Mining: Very profitable, very boring.
Exploration: If high-sec sites are anything to go on, explorers could make a decent living. But there's a lot of risk there too because you're very vulnerable in an exploration ship. You also probably want Hacking and Archeology at least level four if not all the way to 5.
And there WILL be PVP, you will get podded at the worst possible time. Don't fly anything you can't afford to replace.
There's no plan, there's no race to be run

I have the SP to tackle, but I'd love to have something to do when I'm not feeling like doing that.
I'll look into exploration skills.
I'm roughly 30 days from being able to fly a battleship with T2 everything but weapons. Think T1 Meta 4 weapons might do in the meantime, or should I wait the extra 60 days to get to T2?
Do people form mining fleets or anything, or is it mostly solo miners scurrying around?
Sorry for the barrage of questions, I'm just trying to make sure I don't end up wishing I hadn't made the leap.
Generally, if it's a 'friendly' sector (like, Merch has a base there), Miners can call out for help when belt rats spawn. Sometimes people soloed, other times they'd group up.
Either way, have a safe spot and be aligned to it. Be ready to bail AT ALL TIMES. Especially when mining. Keep an eye on local chat. Someone you don't know enters the system? Be ready to bail.
I have no idea what T1 Meta 4 is. So... maybe? Is it something you can afford to lose?
If you plan to do exploration content in null-sec, I'd invest in being able to fly a covops well. I'm still working out what else would be needed myself.
