My girlfriend and I adopted a cat about three months ago, and he's a great little guy, but I've noticed recently that he has quite a lot of what I can only describe as a dark eye goo, as you can see below:
No other cats I've ever owned have had this, so I'm a little concerned. And I can't seem to find any great information on Google. He seems healthy overall -- had a little bit of a cold when we first got him, but nothing since then. Anyone know what might be up with poor Rex? Should I be concerned?

Some cats just get more than others. Make sure you're cleaning it out. What does your vet say?
We don't have a regular vet, but there is one that works at the shelter weekly, so we can ask if you think that's necessary.
You need to take your cat in for a check up and get a regular vet. Make sure all his shots are up to date and what not. That's the responsible thing to do.

His shots are definitely up to date, but I'll look into a vet regardless. It just seemed to me that this might be something others had experience with and that it's nothing to worry about since his health seems fine aside from the eye gunk.

it might be nothing, but it is annoying to deal with considering cats love rubbing their faces on things. My grandmother's cat has this issue and the gunk stained my shoe.
Does the cat ever sleep on or near heat vents or any place that might be dusty? I ask because back when my mom's cat was still a kitten she thought it had an eye infection or something and the vet spent a few weeks playing her for a little over $2k in tests and antibiotic eye creams until my mom realized that the kitten was climbing under her bed and sleeping on a heat vent, getting dust blown in its face. She kept the cat away from the vent for a little over a day and the supposed eye infection cleared up completely.

Hmm, that's interesting. The cat sleeps right on our wooden floor a lot, so that might be kind of dusty, but nothing else that I know of.
My cats get this often, but it usually is just irritation as has been suggested. If it's chronic and lasting for more than a handful of days at a time, or is constant, you probably want to call a vet.
My cat had this from the day we had her until she died 13 years later. As Esh says, some cats just have it more, our vets confirmed this. The only time you need to worry is if its yellow which could be a slight infection. Just keep his eyes clean is what I'd say.

Is it yellowish or just clear?
It it's pus-ey looking it could be resulting from a cold, flu, or herpes (which is forever, but is basically like a flu and it comes and goes)

No, it's dark. It's right there in the photo.
