Fixed the leg. Bit more to do still. Very dull picture, because I'm finding the glare of light off this much shading quite hard to avoid when photographing...
Your value range in this image is miles more superior than the value in your other drawings of the human figure, and your forms are much more accurate. Good job
In general, stop when you feel you've accomplished/learned what you wanted from the exercise, or if you think it's as good as you can make it. At school, most of the time my stopping point is dictated by the pose being finished :P
Folks, I really need your help, if you would't mind. I'm drawing someone who requested it, and I chose the most difficult expression I could for a bit of a challenge, I just can't seem to get it right. This is the girl:
I've been stuck at the rough sketch stage for about a week and no matter how many times I come back to it, I can't seem to get the lips and nose right. Can anyone point out where I'm getting it wrong?
You can see, she looks terrible. Is the gap between the nose and lips wrong? Is the nose itself wrong? I can't for the life of me work it out.
It's how the area lines up with the tilt of her head. The whole bottom of her face (starting from the bulb of the nose/nostrils down) has been pushed in toward her neck. Also you shrunk down the lips and chin a little, and she's missing some of her left cheek near the mouth.
Getting back to that very shortly, doing an emergency portrait of my aunt and uncle for their ruby wedding. I have 2 days. Goddamnit. Half way through:
I really like that composition, Halen. The lighting choices work (for me, anyway!) and I like the way the color is in that very dusky/street light range. Nice work!
It's my birthday, so I took the day off work, sat in the garden in the blazing sunshine and painted what was in front of my face. Yay
It's not perfect, and the proportions are off, but hey, sunshine!
Draw an egg.
+1

Very cool stuff @Halen! I really like that magpie piece. And also most of your other stuff because it looks great.
This is really making me want to try painting more often (which is to say, more than twice a year). Although, turns out it's difficult to find time for these things with a 5 month old baby.
Tell me about it! Most of the paintings that don't involve people's faces take about an hour, so it's definitely possible! I've got 2 kids, so I remember all too painfully those early months. Every moment the little bastards lovely sweethearts are asleep is far too precious to be spent on anything as trivial as painting... haha.

I'm planning to go full on Lyrium on this.
sigh.
Bit more. I don't really know when to stop. @lyrium, when do you stop?
A lot more to do here.

Fixed some of the more obvious errors:
I saw this guy yesterday looking for bargue stuff and thought of you, maybe seeing his process would help somehow.
Anyway, good work on that latest portrait. Keep it up!
Yea, looking at his tones makes me realise how scratchy mine is. Still much to do! Very useful thank you.

Or don't!
Tried my hand at a little impressionism. About an hour in oil paints:

Did a little magpie experiment:
