Final Fantasy is a long standing JRPG series which started in 1987. Yes it has a stupid name that everyone knows the story about. Yes it has a lot of genre cliches. Yes the first game totally rips off D&D which totally ripped off Tolkien who totally ripped off a bunch of norse and celtic myths. Swords, sorcery, crystals, knights, mages, dragons, chocobos, moogles, men named Cid.
MAIN SERIES
They've made
FOURTEEN main series games and over fifty spin off titles. Here's what the fans says about them.
I hate Final Fantasy because it is glitchy/too easy/too hard. Also DQ III is so much better.
I hate Final Fantasy II because beating yourself up to improve stats is extremely dumb and passwords are so cliche. This isn't a SAGA game!
I hate Final Fantasy III because some of the jobs suck and I don't wike chiwbi gwaphics waaaah.
I hate Final Fantasy IV because they made too many different versions of it. It's too hard/easy/bad 3D/bad flash gamey looking.
I love Final Fantasy V because it is Fiesta time and I can play it for Child's Play.
I hate Final Fantasy VI because I'm a soulless monster without any redeeming qualities.
I hate Final Fantasy VII because it's cool to hate popular things.
I hate Final Fantasy VIII because it has teenagers and a nonsensical plot. I've also never played any other Japanese game.
I hate Final Fantasy IX because they have big heads. Also Tetra Master is legit terrible.
I hate Final Fantasy X because HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (belt dress)
I hate Final Fantasy XI because it is too hard and too online, also all my friends played WoW.
I hate falling asleep while not playing Final Fantasy XII. Also its too British Star Wars.
I hate Final Fantasy XIII because it's not like FF (insert number here) and I don't like featureless tunnels, only two characters, main character death game over, or one of a million other things.
I hate Final Fantasy XIV because I have good taste.
SPIN OFFS
Everytime profits are down SE makes some more FF games. There are a lot of them, too many to list them all so I'll just continue the theme with the more popular ones.
I hate Final Fantasy Tactics because the Advance series is so much better.
I hate Final Fantasy Adventure because it's actually a Mana game/really is an FF spinoff (It's called FF Gaiden in Japan!)
I hate Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles because I have no friends.
I hate Final Fantasy Mystic Quest because it's too easy and I don't like having fun.
I hate Final Fantasy X-2 because it is pretty princess dress up and female empowerment scares me. Also I'm no good at math so Sphere Break is right out.
I hate Dissidia because IT'S NOT MY DADDY'S FF. Alternatively I don't like stupid names.
I hate FF XIII-2 because of preorder DLC, stupid time plots and...(to be continued)
I hate 4 Warriors of Light because of its dumb auto-targeting and it's too old school.
I hate Chocobo Dungeon Wii because I am tone deaf and excellent music angers me.
I hate Crisis Core because I am LOVELESS.
I hate Theatrhythm because I can't spell or pronounce it.
I hate Final Fantasy Tactics Advance because Matsuno worked on this more than he did on FF 12.
I hate Dirge of Cerberus because I have good taste in action games.
I hate Dissidia Duodecim 012 Final Fantasy because of its stupid name. I never actually got around to playing it.
WHICH VERSION IS BEST?
A new segment to the FF Hate thread OP. This is the definitive version list by me, XoB.
FF1: Released on...well, just about everything. NES/Wii VC is the go to platform for the original experience. As far as the upscaled ports go you have PSX, GBA, PSP and iOS. I like them all, but while PSP and iOS have one extra dungeon and new spiffy graphics, those said graphics just seem unnatural to me. Like a newgrounds game. Still they have everything the PSX and GBA versions have, only more EXCEPT for the PSX's option for an old school difficulty level. So it's sort of a tossup here. I like the GBA version the best because of it's compromises, but what I really suggest is for people to play the original NES version.
FF2: Released on, the same platforms as FF1, usually bundled together. The lone exception being the NES, as this was one of the last games in the series to come out here. Also unlike the NES version being the best of FF1 for that old timey feel, the ports get it right with much needed balance fixes! Play one of them instead. If you like the PSP/ios Graphics, get that one, if not, GBA or PSX is fine!
FF3: Released on the Famicom, DS, iOS, and now PSP in Japan, though it has the same translation and is the same damn game as the other two English released titles. These three versions are almost exactly the same and none of them are quite as good as the original.
FF4: Released on SNES, SFC (TWICE!) PSX/PSN, GBA, DS, PSP. SNES version is easy to ignore these days as its translation is bad and its based on Easy Type. PSX version is a port of a Wonderswan Color version (so are the first two FF ports actually) and the rest of the versions are based on that one, though again with new translations. GBA version is the first one with new content but the NA version has an ATB bug which pisses some people off. PSP version is the latest one and it includes the mobile phone/Wiiware sequel The After Years which some people including me dig, but it has that crappy Newgrounds Flash game looking art. The real winner here is the total remake FF IV DS. 3D like FF III but with a new augment system, harder fights, brutal optional bosses, and a ton of fleshing out of the story.
FF5: Released on PSX/PSN, GBA. Get the GBA version. It's the only thing the thread agrees on.
FF6: Released on SNES/Wii VC, PSX/PSN, GBA. I like both the SNES/Wii VC and the GBA release. PSX has shitty sound effects, load times, a slightly uncensored but very little other altered script, and two cinematics that you can youtube. GBA versus SNES is a fight between new and old script, acceptable sound versus orgasmic sound, bug fixes or weird ass bugs, bad font versus awesome font, new content versus original. I love them both.
FF7: Released on PSX/PSN, PC. PSX. The PC version had to be built from the ground up and has terrible sound but has some better models here and there. The minigames hate being run on modern machines. If the new version is up to spec in all ways then this might change.
FF8: Released on PSX/PSN, PC. PSX is the version to get. FF8 is rare as hell on PC and while it does better than base FF7 PC it's still not perfect.
FF9: Released on PSX/PSN. Done.
FF10: Released on PS2. Done. HD version might come out eventually. If you want to be pedantic about it, get the Asian version of FF X International.
FF11: Released on PC, 360, PS2. PC version for obvious reasons.
FF12: Released on PS2.
FF13: Released on 360/PS3. PS3 is one disc, better cutscene resolution, better music. PS3 version.
FF14: Released on PC, with future PS3 release. Don't buy it.
THE FUTURE
We've got a decent slate of games on the horizon.
FF Type Zero: AKA Awesome FF game for PSP that will never be released in the west because the PSP is dead.
FF XIII Versus: Still not a fighting game. Also never coming out.
FF VII PC: Re-release. Might be good, not on steam.
FF XIV 2.0: They said they fixed it. Don't believe
Ondore's Wada's lies.
KINGDOM HEARTS
Is light. Talk about it elsewhere.

Sounds legit.
I hate Dissidia 012 because item farming is balls convoluted compared to Dissidia.
And to be honest I hate FFXIII-2 because it's not Chrono Trigger.
That being said, I'm still of the opinion that if we don't get an announcement at this TGS its been moved to next gen.
Also this.
My stall-for-time-play-the-earlier-Final-Fantasies-while-waiting-for-FFX-HD plan has hit a snag as I need to fix my PS3. Ironically this will mean I'm stalling for even more time. :P
You can always hate it because it will never show up on the PSN. Ever.
Oh, it's a great song. It's just odd that we're getting that and nothing from Final Fantasy 14. Hell, the game's DLC includes stuff from 13-2, which came out a year after 14, I believe.
Also this.
// Switch: SW-5306-0651-6424 //
I hate Theatrhythm because 2/3 of my dark notes use either Mambo de Chocobo, Something to Protect, or Ending Movie (FF12).
Somnus was supposed to be out this week in Europe, but it's been removed from the line-up.
I kinda want a rhythm party of assholes and foul mouths.
// Switch: SW-5306-0651-6424 //
Level them up, I guess?
Unless you're hell-bent on getting random items or kill bosses in dark notes, it really doesn't matter who's in your party. I guess it's a nostalgia thing... "I'm playing with Vivi, yay!"
I hate Theatrhythm because I'm going to end up spending £43 on its DLC.
Also because rotating notes on Ultimate/Dark Notes 90+.
I also get Ending Movie FF12 all the time, my main second offender is Fight With Seymour.
Good point.
HATE!
HATE!
HATE!
[/Obligatory]
So as an introduction to the series, I got my Godson FF4 for the DS. I haven't played that version, but I figured it would have the least messing around with stuff like Jobs or Espers, it's more straight up "everyone has a designated role, you must make them better at this role". I haven't heard if he's started playing it, but fingers crossed! (He's seven, by the way)
The original being Tactics Ogre (1995)? :P
To each their own, but the PSP TO is probably one of the most polished, satisfying game experiences I've ever had, up til the entirely optional postgame item farm (which after 140 hours I grew sick of and just downloaded a save with every item just so I could play for fun again). War of the Lions was good fun but kinda muddy, slow and small in comparison.
Yeah, I did know TO came out before FFT, but I've only played the PSP version, hence my strange chronology. Also, when I meant original, it was in relation to FFT Advance.
That said, TO on the PSP was pretty good, but the story didn't grip me like FFT, the crafting system bugged the shit out of me, I felt damage output from was anemic and killing things took forever, it felt like every map was you down hill to a bunch of ranged units, it felt like getting enough ability points (or whatever they were called) for decent skills took forever, and I couldn't get the hang of leveling up classes instead of units.

I'm nowhere close to that in the Dark Notes. That just sounds awful. No, don't tell me what those notes are. I need to be fresh for that sort of hate.
I get Fight With Seymour constantly, but I think its fun so I let it slide. I'm getting pretty much every XIII track way too often too.
Still, Theatrhythm has kept my 3DS on for nearly a week straight. I just keep popping in and playing one or two Dark Notes.
Okay, it needs SOME hate. Being stuck at 7/8 crystals for four different character unlocks. Haaaate.

That whole animation pacing issue and screen stretching asshattery that Square pulled with War of the Lions killed the game for me.
On the plus side, when the planets align and the Hale-Bopp comet returns and PSOne play makes it onto the vita, the original FFT is also available on the PSN as a PSOne title. Fun times will be for to having that day.
(I wonder why the FFT games are half the price of the PSP TO on the PSN right now even though FFT is the more "mainstream popular" game...)
The crafting was appalling, I'll give you that as well (% chance to fail, why? Especially when you can save beforehand :rotate: ). I love the story, especially as it's one of the few games I've played with actual moral choices and repercussions. And the fact that you can go back and play the alternate routes, and they're completely different stories? Wonderful.
Gameplay mechanics... eh. Plenty of esoteric shit and some fiddly menus, but I can't say I had a problem with learning skills, dealing damage or levelling up. And oh man, the Chariot system. Just... goddamn, so great. I wish I could use it more because I always go for the no incap/no chariot titles, but I love games that provide variable difficulty like that.
The chariot system was nice because I don't think it told you your %chance to succeed beforehand, or even if a spell wouldn't work due to obstructions in the way. There were lots of good points, just one too many grating one for me.
I always thought you a leaned individual Kime, but it seems I was mistaken.
First TRhythm character unlocked! ...It is some dude from FF2, the only FF I haven't even attempted to play despite owning it (I only have the PSX version).

Maybe if I'm bored, I'll post a "Everything you wanted to know about dark note farming and didn't care to ask" guide that I've managed to work out via my own experiences with it.
A sequel to this game could be amazing. They have all the systems in place and just a tweak here or there could make it even more amazing.
