Why are there iron-sights in the game?
You can look down the sights of the .357 for a slight zoom and increase in accuracy at the expense of your rate of fire. It was a mechanic that was present in Half-Life: Deathmatch, but we've brought it into the singleplayer to help solidify the weapon's role. We've added an option to the main menu to completely disable that functionality, as a result of the feedback we've received from the video.
The .357 and crossbow are the only weapons that you can use the sights on, and they're for decent gameplay reasons. We aren't casualising or consolifying the mod; you don't have regenerating health, there aren't chest-high walls, you won't get strawberry jam on the screen when you're hurt, etc.
How is aiming down the sights and being more accurate "casualising"? The only thing that makes games with iron sights easier is if the auto aim puts your sights on the player, otherwise if a gun has sights shouldnt you be able to aim down them to be more accurate? honestly now a days I expect iron sights in games, its kind of how you use a gun.
Maybe im confusing the word "casualising" to mean easier, but still, I dont see the problem with iron sights unless there is also auto aim with it.
I thought valve farmed out everything for CS:GO, or is that just the console ports?
It was developed together with Hidden Path (the Defense Grid people), but I don't think they've said anything about how much of it is Valve and how much is Hidden Path.
All of the publicity talk I've seen of it has been by Chet Faliszek, who's a Valve guy.
How is aiming down the sights and being more accurate "casualising"?
It doesn't. People just latch on to things like iron sights as emblematic of newer FPS games that they don't like while being nostalgic about older ones. It's silly but it's very common. There is nothing "casualising" about iron sights - any way you look at it (unless there's auto-aim, as you mentioned, which you can have without iron sights too) it's slightly more difficult and more realistic than just shooting from the hip all the time. Talking about it in relation to "consolifying" the mod is also nonsense, console games are no more likely to use iron sights than PC games, and aiming in console games is shit no matter what (which is why many have auto-aim...)
Regenerating health I can kind of at least understand people having a problem with, although let's face it, the old system of being able to run over a convenient health pack and magically heal yourself doesn't stand up to logical scrutiny either. But very few people would want to play a game which treated gunshot wounds at all realistically (get shot once in the torso, collapse, bleed out and die). Well, given the popularity of DayZ maybe I'm wrong.
Jam on the screen is just a cliche thing people are tired of.

Heh, I remember the first time I played a game that had iron sights on every weapon. It was the first Call of Duty, and it was on the PC. Man, that game was awesome.

M1 Grand. First time I saw Iron Sights in a game, blew my mind.

Pfft, Iron Sights? Back in my day we played Thief: The Dark Project, and we only had wooden sights to guide our shots. And most of the time we weren't even aiming at people, couldn't hit them more than two feet away!
Many years ago I worked as a security guard at this empty building used for storage. I had my computer up there to keep me company. I would pretty often play Minesweeper or Freecell when I just wanted to zone out for a bit. One of the other guards started getting on my computer and playing Minesweeper, so we eventually had a little competition going to see who could get the best times. Neither of us ever beat my time of 14 seconds for the smallest one. I don't remember the others, but I do remember that one.
My record on the smallest is 2:) Although that was very lucky. 6 or 8 with out extreme luck.
For those of you who have not yet experienced Nimbus, this is my recommendation on Steam.
I make it a point to recommend those games that others would overlook. Nimbus deserves your time and does not deserve to be overlooked. It's a simple-seeming momentum based flight puzzler that is far more engrossing than its premise would have you believe. Toward the end, you'll find yourself flying in loops through speed gates to try and find that last gold coin before GODDAMNIT COIN COME TO MY TINY SHIP I ONLY NEED ONE MORE FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT!

The leaderboards are fantastic. It uses your Steam Profile friends list so you can compare your speed to fellow PAers and cry at how terrible your are compared to Adda and Ante

When some people see iron sights, they automatically associate it with Modern Warfare. Don't ask me why. It's a dumb thing to do.
When I see iron sights, I associate them with games like Crysis, Red Orchestra, and STALKER, in which you have iron sights in order to, you know, sight your shots. Modern Warfare has a left shoulder zoom mode in which your weapon is, unrelatedly, moved to the center of the screen.

See, that's exactly how I think of them. When I think of Modern Warfare, I remember the weird, pseudo-iron sights like you describe. Gun moved to the center of the screen, view zooms in, but you're still aiming with a reticle. This is entirely different from the other games you mentioned, and stuff like Arma and Killing Floor, where "iron sights" means looking through the sights of the gun, sans reticle.
Me, I love me some iron sights. The more irony the better.

I have five Beta keys for AirMech for whoever wants one. PM me.
I just ask the first one use my referral. I don't need the referral currency, but there are just so many achievements just for friends leveling up. Then they are free to go nuts with referrals if they wish.

CS pack midweek is nice and all but I was hoping that it would include the other Source shooters... I want me some cheap(er) Day of Defeat!
Day of Defeat Source has been known to go on sale for $2.50 before. It will surely happen again.
Oh, absolutely. I can totally wait until the next sale unless the old WW2 shooter craving creeps up between now and the then... and then it's only $10.00 anyways. What I really want is an updated Wolf:ET though. Ah well.

I had an email about updating their policy so you may have to go accept that.
I want to know more PA people on Twitter.
While that's prob completely true, I'm pretty much a Valve fanboy and willing to pay the extra $6-$10 to support their games on release.
RE: Paypal
Yes, they were having issues with paypal earlier, but it appears to be back up now.

All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.

Just so people can maybe get some Fallout action in a Vegas that is new, but not quite so new as to be new.
