Hi

Since i have reformatted my pc yesterday i have noticed a few problems with my dvd drive. It is a optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A drive. Firstly now and then when running games such as supreme commander it makes odd noises similiar to the sounds made when loading a disk but quieter and it stops and starts for a few seconds.

Next installation times seem to take much longer now, but once installed they play fine.

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

System Manufacturer: System manufacturer
System Model: System Product Name
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Page File: 267MB used, 3673MB available

DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode

they are my specs, could it be busted?. Some games just dont install, even when they installed just yesterday on another pc. This pc is 4 months old.

Any ideas as to why the installation times are much longer now? A game such as dawn of war the dark crusage takes 10mins to get under half way installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like the ide drivers that are being used by xp aren't the specific ones for your motherboard chipset (its probably using the generic xp ones). Try getting the latest chipset drivers from the chipset manufacturers homepage. (ati/nvidia, via etc).
