The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
At the same time he makes a lot of complaints about previewing games in general when I think he really meant to bash E3 previews, so he comes off a little insane.
I really disliked listening to arguing for two hours... mainly because Dyack made no sense and you could tell he was being irrational trying to defend his baby.
He admitted that the E3 build sucked, but thought EGM had no right to report that it sucked.
Hmmm...
The conversation should have been 30 seconds long:
"So, I hear you thought the E3 build of Too Human was less than spectacular"
"yeah"
"me too"
THE END.

I can't believe what I'm hearing...
"You guys should be more critical. Unless you're talking about me."
"You guys should be more critical. Unless you're talking about me."
Did he really say that?
No, but it's very much how he comes across.
He says several times that they should be extremely critical to him and his games. It's the timing with which he takes issue. Though I disagree that a bad E3 report can doom your game.

Well, the thought that a preview should give critical problems as well as "zomg new pants" is a good one. Previews should tell me potential downfalls of the game along with spewing all sorts of awesomeness.
The problem is that Too Human was one of the few titles that actually got some negative press that I can remember. This is not a problem with EGM, but with the gaming press in general. When games that come out are buggy, with shitty control and horrid graphics, but 3 months earlier got a "frothing demand" preview, there is a problem. The negative press about titles before they come out is almost non-existant.
I thought he was actually saying that Nintendo games get praised when other games would get insulted and that previewing games years before they come out is stupid, with some of his games as examples.
I was thinking about this game a little more today, and it's sounding more and more like something I'd really like to play. A Diablo-style RPG with the fighting engine of a God of War/Devil May Cry and with online multiplayer. I don't care how crazy Dyack may or may not be, if he pulls this off, it could be a great fucking game.

I crashed the E3 build 3 times and every time they looked at me and said oh my that's never happened before.
I felt bad for Mark. This guy is completely full of shit. If they KNEW that the build wasn't very good I can't understand why they wouldn't expect bad feedback on it and then proceed to bitch/whine about said bad feedback. This guy is full of it.
He had a couple of smart and well thought out points but they were completely lost in all his defensive ramblings.
I mean, I agree the previewing early builds is not exactly something that's good for the industry but in the end, if he can't produce a good build of their game, then it's completely on his shoulders. But then he started hassling Mark because he was critical of the game and it just sounded like he had sour grapes against him because his game is "potentially" good.
Having said all that, I've never really had any interest in Too Human. I didn't like the design of Eternal Darkness at all and what few things they added to Twin Snakes, I didn't like. So Silicon Knights games are clearly not for me.
He's just overstating his point. Not really crazy.
By the way, calling him a "fucking moron" without even understanding his point and his problem in conveying it only makes you look like a fucking moron.

He contradicts his "point" several times, but only when his "point" would apply negatively to himself.
No he doesn't. He's trying to make the point that you can never judge an unreleased game on a reasonable level and that journalists have very subjectively filled in gaps on previews of E3 builds.

But he also says that game journalists should be more critical. The thing is, EGM WERE more critical and what is Dyack's reaction? E3 sucks! You guys should've been more lenient (sp?)! Blah, blah, blah.
The funniest part to me was when he was pretty much saying "I feel sorry for you guys because you'll have defend yourselves when my game ends up being the best game ever! No-one doubts me! Mwahahaha!" By that point I was wishing he'd shut up and save himself from further embarassment.
Luckily though, the latter half of the podcast improved.
Yeah more critical on games from companies they love and released games. The problem is that game journalists blindly give companies/brands they love the benefit of the doubt when previewing their E3 builds. But on games like Too Human that don't have the name recognition hype, EGM was not only critical but was insulting it. So a wide disparity exists in E3 previews.
There, that's his point. If you still don't get it throw schoolyard taunts at him all you want, it'll only be an ironic reflection of yourself.

EGM reports on what they see. If Bungie produced a trailer of Halo 3 that looked rubbish and ran at 10 frame a second, they'd be insulting it too. It's Dyack's (and Microsoft's) fault that they decided to show the rubbish demo and they have to live with the consequences.
IMO Dyack is only one rung down from Molyneax on the ladder of excessive-hyping, except that he has actually said "our game is going to be WAY better than those other games" while Molyneax focusses completely on his own games. It's alright to think you're making a good game but to hype it up as a revolutionary game just makes it look like you've got a big ego.
Btw, I like how you accuse me of throwing 'schoolyard taunts' at him when I haven't. Nice way of making yourself look like a condescending prick there, Jack.
I tend to mix people of similar posts together (consciously, because most of you seem to mimic each other). Anyway, I never said I agreed with his point just that you were completely getting it wrong by saying he contradicted himself. But I do think he's right. Halo 3 really looked subpar in what Bungie has showed so far and 1UP has been gushing over it and throwing out rationalizations. Fanboyism is a strong force in gaming journalism when it comes to any kind of preview. In the chaotic context of something like E3 it's much more flagrant.

the halo they were talking about in the pod cast was Halo 1 the first year it was on the show floor. not anything recent.
Edit: same with the original starcraft demo on the show floor, back when it was still in the Warcraft II engine, the demo was so bad, they pulled it.

I think the stress is getting to him.
He's putting the pressure on Mark, though.
But only because it builds up anticipation and then I have to wait. Like in Spores case.
He has some good points, really.
So it's never Dyack's fault? I can tell he does not seem to think so.
edit: and now he's saying that "people" he knows think the game is awesome.
Man is a fucking idiot.
Edit: oh god, i was only a little way through, the farther it goes the crazier he gets. Full of himself and his project much?
wow... just wow... this guy is a fucking idot.
YOU EGM GUYS ARE GOING TO REGRET IT WHEN TOO HUMAN COMES OUT AND ITS SO AWESOME AND YOU GUYS MADE A BAD REMARK ABOUT IT ONCE AT E3

But hey, maybe Too Human could end up near the awesomeness he says it is. It sounds kinda cool.
