Honestly, Portal is arguably more revered than the Half-Life series at this point. Seriously, that thing was a phenomena.
And again, Valve released nothing that you would qualify as "groundbreaking" between Half-Life and Half-Life 2, so I'm not sure why this time is different? Because its longer?
Because it's longer and because there weren't any valve games between 1 and 2 like there are now. So one could assume that they were just being consistently awesome at that stage.
Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic and Day of Defeat all came out during that time period. All three had retail releases.
None of those are from valve. They are all mods that valve bought up after the fact.
Is there some other point that you're trying to make that I'm missing? Because I feel like you know that already.

Well, firstly, TFC was entirely developed at Valve (TF, a quake mod, was what was developed outside of Valve; Valve hired the TF guys before Half-Life was even released).
But ultimately, the teams that made these games were hired by Valve and put to work making Valve games. The projects became Valve projects with the full weight of the company behind them, just like any other project at Valve. The people working on them are Valve employees; many of whom still work there to this day. (Robin Walker, one of the creators of Team Fortress, was one of the bigger names working on Half-Life 2 even)
Like, it's irrelevant where the projects started. Valve is the one who finished them and Valve is the one who should be judged by the state they reached in the end. If they are, as you say, not groundbreaking enough, then that's on Valve: not the handful of people who were working on it beforehand.
EDIT: If you want to see something that was 100% entirely developed at Valve, start to finish, in that time period, take a look at Ricochet.
EDIT2: Ahahahah. Valve is still charging $5 for Ricochet. What the hell?

Ricochet is great and I don't care if I'm the only person in the entire universe who knows this.

Ultimately you're entitled to your opinion, I just personally think it's a little weird to look at games like Portal, Left 4 Dead and DOTA2 and go "Valve has lost what made them special." Especially after reading about the development of Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and Portal 2. (If you haven't read the "Final Hours" pieces, I highly recommend them. Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar was pretty great too, but it looks like its out of print.)

Raising the Bar is such a good book, so glad i have a copy.

I've been trying to get a copy of raising the bar forever. Also I was unsure if valve made TFC. At the same time it was pretty clear that it's idea was based heavily on TF for quake. It was also made in the time period when valve was still great so I don't think it effects my argument. If anything it revolutionized multiplayer games (I don't think the original tf was popular enough to be able to claim that), which only bolsters my argument

Of course it's also possible that the people responsible for valves awesomeness could all have been too busy making HL3 for the past 10 years to work on making any of their other games awesome.

I've been wrong before... but there's just something in the air.
I really think that this is going to be the year we see something about a new half-life.
Well they officially announced the engine at least finally. I imagine we should see some game of theirs being developed with it by the end of the year. Whether that is Half-Life 3 or not, remains to be seen. I had a dream recently that Valve announced Team Fortress 3 as an 8v8 FPS MOBA and simultaneously announced Team Fortress 2.0 using the Source 2.0 engine to appease TF fans angry about the change in direction for the series.
I am gonna be so lukewarm on L4D3 if it isn't a massive return to the aesthetic/atmosphere of L4D1 rather than 2
I'm gonna be lukewarm on it because fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck zombies until the end of time.

Ew, no.
I don't want to catch corpse rot.
In fact, I don't want anything to do with zombies.

I thought "zombie" was just code for "thing that looks like a person that we can shoot without repercussions"
No, that's "nazis".
I'm real tired of those in games too
Zombies are already as if not more played out than Nazi's ever were. Wolfenstein TNO is more fun to play than any zombie game in years for what it's worth.

L4D3 with actual zombies rather than infected could be cooool.
I do kinda like the idea that, seeing as a zombie apocalypse that tries to ground itself in reality is really rather implausible no matter how you spin it, instead going with the old school magic zombies and making the whole thing be controlled by a secret cabal of necromancers.

Now that Source 2 has been announced, does that mean we will finally get a sequel to Bloodlines? Valve is going to bring Troika back from the dead to develop it RIGHT?

c'mon, man.
Yeah really. We already know that they operate in "cabals" or groups of teams each working on their own project. So it's entirely possible and I don't think there's really any way for me, or you to know for sure. It's plausible that the people responsible for half life would want to make a half life game.

One of my all time favourites had to be Sven Co-op. Because of that experience, I pretty much want MP co-op for just about every game ever.

Geth.
Why I fear the ocean.
Geth is merely aware of the inevitable clash. Geth anticipates and welcomes the coming conflict, as do I.
The machines were just waiting for humanity to make the first move.
Good job, Drake, you played right into their hands!
That would be correct
