Risen 2 - Play a Pirate that Learns Voodoo, Drinks Excessively and Trains Animals

So, is anyone else playing this game?

I never played Risen 1 as it looked like a generic medieval RPG, but Risen 2 goes another direction with a setting heavily steeped in Pirates.

In this game, you can do the following things:
Carry around a trained parrot that will distract enemies so you can stab them in the face
Drink Rum or Grog to heal yourself with no side effects
Use Voodoo spells to cause enemies to kill themselves or attack each other
Solve any dispute with NPCs by kicking the shit out of them and then robbing them for good measure

You can't do the following things:
Fight non-human enemies with any methodology other than continually attacking and hoping for the best

Risen 2 was just released on the 360 and PS3 last week and seems to have gotten virtually no attention, which is a shame as aside from some mechanics issues it's a very fun game. It's been out on the PC a while, and the PC actually has dodge functionality included but I guess they figured Console players didn't care about well crafted battle systems.

Seriously, the combat system is pretty bad. You get parry, riposte, counter, etc. moves but only when fighting against human enemies. You can't even block or dodge non-human enemy attacks, which seems mind-bogglingly stupid. Fortunately you can get guns that make it less of an issue, but this game seriously needs a dodge added to the console versions. Plus, enemy attacks frequently stun-lock you while attacking them does not. I've been playing the game on Easy (which I almost never do), and that's made it much more enjoyable.

The story and dialog is actually pretty clever in parts, and the voice acting is above average. The animations are PS2-era but the environments are well done and feel like actual islands for the most part. I am having a surprising amount of fun with the game and am glad I picked it up, but it could be so much more.

I liked the first one, but man, I was all thumbs when it came to the combat. Those lizards were brutal.

Was always curious about how this one compares to the first.

I finished the first one on the 360. The combat was awful. I'm of the idea that Dragon's Dogma does a 100 times better anything Risen tried to do.

I sided with the Order but I used swords almost all the time. You got a staff at the beginning but it was just easier to use your fists and magic was almost useless.

I'm looking forward to this one. I named one of my pawns in DD Patty. :)

I bought Risen on the 360 blindly and absoulutely hated it. Mainly because the combat was so awful. I don't know the last time I played an awesome pirate game though. Monkey Island I guess...

I'm interested, but I'll probably just get it from GameFly, or wait til its like $10.

I was interested in this because fantasy pirate RPG seemed like a nice change of pace. Then everything I heard indicated it was completely dire, and the videos I watched didn't so much to dissuade me from that impression.

Thanks to the Steam summer sale, I now have Two Worlds II and its fantasy pirate DLC, though God knows if I'll ever get to playing them.

Combat is really bad for sure, but for some reason the game has clicked with me.

I got it from GameFly though, so I might have been more aggravated by the game if I paid full price.

I actually kind of enjoyed Risen 2 despite the fact that they completely fucked up the combat. Gothic 2 (+NOTR) is still by far their best game, though. I don't really know which way they should go in terms of style, but they really need to fix the combat.
