[PATV] Monday, August 13, 2012 - CheckPoint Season 2, Ep. 15: Final Fantasy Apology
I actually liked Spirits Within better than Advent Children.
I did wonder what SW was for until I realized that Square wanted to prove they could put together a movie without having to rely on the franchise. No Chocobos, Mogs, or super magic needed to be present.
I'm not sure you can say that Spirits Within doesn't rely on the franchise when "Final Fantasy" is right there in the title. Also I'm pretty sure there's a Cid in it. *looks at wikipedia* ... oh I see, it's not "Cid", it's "Sid". So there's 2 solid connections to the franchise we all know and love.
It's either incredibly lazy marketing for a final product they didn't think could stand on its own merits, or it's an attempt to start up a FF film franchise by ditching the chocobos, mogs, magic, etc only to faceplant out of the gate and ditch the sequels. Not sure which.
Spirits Within was actually a pretty good movie...it was just doomed by having "Final Fantasy" in the title. Gamers didn't want to see it, because it had nothing to do with FF, and nobody else wanted to see it, because it was an early video game movie.
They did say they will show plenty of gameplay at Gamescom, this week. They just put out the cinematic trailers to help explain the story behind the world changes first.
The Spirits Within would have sold better if it had, like, memorable characters. Or a story more developed than completing an eight-part gathering quest. Steve Buscemi tried really, really hard to rescue the crappy writing for his character, but he couldn't carry the movie on comic relief. TSW was a beautiful movie - don't go confusing yourself into thinking it was a good movie.
Yo, the Agnis Philosophy demo was a tech demo and was rendered in real time: it was meant to show what future titles would actually look like in game, not in cutscenes. That's a pretty significant error.
@BadData they didn't say Agnis Philosophy was a cutscene, they said that Square keeps trying to turn their commercials into tech demos like Agnis Philosophy. Which is a problem with a lot of gaming companies, but Square is really really bad about it.
Graham even said "That Agnis Philosophy Tech Demo, it was super pretty".
@LordFizzlebeef
Just because the name is in the title, doesn't make it a movie that either fits the game or is even about the game. The Resident Evil movies have the name of the game, almost all the major characters, the major villains, and still manages to be completely not a "Resident Evil movie" in any way shape or form. Same goes for the Uwe Boll movies, but invoking those unleashes horrible things that crawl in the dark recesses of the mind.

Well put. TSW was an excellent example of computer animation. It just wasn't much of a movie.
Here's something else that's been bugging about the FF14 remake: Apart from the cinematics, has anyone seen anything else about it? Like gameplay or environment? You know, the stuff that people complained enough that forced them to actually remake the game in the first place?
Is this checkpoint show supposed to be funny? Because that is not the impression I'm taking away from it at all. What I'm seeing here is banal attempts at video game comedy with two personalities which could not be anymore annoying.
That aside, I couldn't possibly see anything they are talking about here as anything other than misinformed and useless. At least I know to avoid this show from now on.
@Black_Heart ; yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion, man.
BTW, what was misinformed? Asides from FF7 having some pretty badass cutscenes, too. But 8 really did kick it up a notch.
@LordFizzlebeef ; "an attempt to start up a FF film franchise by ditching the chocobos, mogs, magic, etc only to faceplant out of the gate and ditch the sequels." is what I took away from it. FF7: Advent Children is what they should have made. FF7:AC was beautiful and did a much better job capitalizing on the series' identity.
I think the problem with Spirits Within is that they wanted it to be accessible to a general audience that may not know what FF is about. Still, they should have made it more in the vein of FF6, where it's high magic and lots of steampunk. I think that would have gained a lot of traction. I believe that it didn't really matter whether the audience knew the world of Final Fantasy or not. If you make it cool, interesting and have a decent story, people will like it. SW was slow, plodding, too much drama, and kind of confusing. Chocobo chases and gigantic airships would have been much cooler.
I enjoyed the show as always.
Well except for the fact that you have the sllloooowwwest servers ever.
I have a 6Mb pipe and I had to let half the show download before I started to watch and it still ended up not being enough.
It's hard to watch that FF trailer and give it any sort of reaction. It's a run-of-the-mill trailer using a run-of-the-mill formula that's supposed to make me excited but all I can think is, "Not this bullshit again..."
I'll check out gameplay when it comes out just in case they've actually done something right for once, but I have no hopes for it at all.

...are you a hardcore Hasbro fan or something? What could possibly have enraged you enough that you felt like this was an appropriate response?

Maybe it's just a timing thing and you're getting it a high traffic time. I've never had an issue with it and I have a slower connection than yours. Heck I just watched this ep from my bro in laws super bad wireless in hong kong and had no issues.
@Bewildered_Ronin i was thinking the same thing, i think it's just some overly emotional FF fans that can't come to grips with the fact that lately square has been making VERY BAD CHOICES and anyone who disagrees is just "uninformed" of exactly how badass square is. Lets face it, at some point square has lost their way. I hope they get back to focusing on story more and cutscenes less. I mean the scenes are awesome and all but I would love to get back to the great stories they used to pump out and maybe get rid of some of the timesinks and overly complicated crafting they seem to love. I would love to play another square game that uses story to pace the game and not level grinding or crafting to slow you down.
Spirits Within was horrible story wise. looked great but it simply wasn't final fantasy aside from Gaia theory. What they really should have done was taken 7 or 8 and cut it up into movie sized bits. both games had definite "chapters" in the story that they could have ended movies at and it couldn't have done any worse in the theatres than spirits within did.
Wha... What? WHAT!? Timesplitters had a-WHAT!!! WHY WASN'T I INFORMED!? WHY WASN'T CHECKPOINT INFORMED!? WHY WAS THE ENTIRE GOD-DAMN POPULATION OF THE GALAXY NOT INFORMED AS TO SUPPORT A 4TH GAME!?
I'm so sad... oh wait Pikmin 3

So in my eyes SW was better thant AC.
