Reiko, Havik and Fujin all play a role in the prequel comic. In fact, Reiko is prominent enough that he just might make it into the game.
The comic really makes me think that Reiko and Frost should be in the game. That they apparently aren't is... odd.
They're probably gonna wrap it up with them dying or something. Or save Frost for a later game. I was almost positive she'd make the game after Killer Frost's involvement in Injustice, when Killer Frost was such a minor DC villainess. Then again, maybe it's because a lot of people hated fighting her that they didn't want to involve her kind of playstyle in Frost, lol.
It occurs to me that I'm really pleased with how they're handling the season pass this time around. It might be a little pricey but at least they've announced the characters up front. Unlike how they handled Injustice, which I'm still annoyed about.
BTW it occurs to me that I have no idea why fans wanted Tremor so badly. He was such a lame boss from such a shitty and forgettable game, who made one cameo in MK9... so why are people excited for him and why did he get petitioned in? The internet makes no sense, man.

Tremor got in because the Mortal Kombat team is awesome.

Just marking boxes off on the "minor characters who haven't yet been in a main game yet" list.
Next up, Hornbuckle and Zebron the tuxedo-wearing zebra.
Because Mortal Kombat has a history of weird shit like this. A game glitch from MK1 became a character in UMK3. An unnamed background character in MK2 became a secret character in MK:DA and then a boss in MK:A.
Animalities came from a rumor that Sub-Zero could turn into a polar bear for an MK2 fatality.
With all this talk about characters, I have to ask: has there been a pirate in Mortal Kombat? I mean, the series is well served in ninjas, robots, cyborgs, cyborg ninja robots, 4 armed monsters from other dimensions, wizards, sorcerers, gods, mercenaries, drug lords, motion capture actors, live action actors, special force operatives, native american stereotypes, and even a cop. But it seems to have somehow missed out on a pirate fighter.
Just seems like with the time travel shenanigans the series has been playing with, there's a lot of possibility for a hook handed, sword wielding, peg legged, pistol slinging, parrot throwing, pirate captain.
Maybe that's what Reptile's Kraken skin is. Reptile dressed in a straight up Pirates of the Caribbean costume for no reason.

Actualy, you know what? Top 5 MK4-7 characters they should add to the next Mortal Kombat
Special Mention: Reiko (MK4): Originally he was going to be Noob Saibot, but they wanted more new characters, so they basically pallette swapped him to make Reiko (which is why they both use shurikans) and the only thing they really had going for him is that he might have bee secretly Shao Kahn, but they basically lampshaded that plotline in the Konquest mode in MK: Deception. So he doesn't get on the list because he got retconned into a nothing-person.
5. Meat (MK4/MK:A): Not really any story (He's another experiment by Shang Tsung, like Ermac) but man did he have some cool moves. He throws his head as a projectile and would basically "Splat" into the ground as a teleport. With the new gore system, they could really do some crazy shit with Meat.
4. Fujin (MK4): God of Wind and peer to Raiden. There's not much more to him, but I think seeing more of Earth's gods is interesting and controlling the wind is a fairly unique powerset (though I guess it might edge too close to Kenshi's and Ermac's telekinesis)
3. Nitara (MK:DA): Boring backstory (Her realm was conquered from Shao Kahn in the olden days, so she's looking to free it from Outworld in the wake of his death) but VERY unique visual design (a lady with batwings and missing an eye) and she has vampire powers which is a fairly unique powerset in Mortal Kombat.
2. Havik (MK:D): I'll get the tough bit out of the way: Havik has a boring backstory. He worships chaos, that's it. Why is he number two? Because his shtick is that he can contort his body is impossible ways; he can spin his upper body around like a helicopter, breaks his own neck as a taunt and in general is really amusing to watch in action. Though his backstory is boring, it does make him flexible, as he'll support whoever will cause the most chaos, so that occasionally means helping the good guys avoid defeat. (Good guys vs bad guys creates lots of chaos, you see.)
1. Ashrah (MK:D): She looks similar to Raiden, though she still looks cool, and she has a lot of spinning movies ala Kung Lao, but she has the best backstory out of all of the characters on this list. She was a demon and a member of Quan Chi's brotherhood of shadow, but she found a holy sword in the Netherrealm that was designed to kill demons. But every time Ashrah uses it to kill a demon, it purifies her soul a little bit, making her story one of redemption. I think that's really cool. Also she has a voodoo doll fatality, so that's cool.
Fujin has appeared in a screenshot or two for MKX, though whether he's on the playable roaster remains to be seen. My gut feeling is he will be.

Holy fuck there really isn't a better example of 90's video game cheese than that
The best part of it is that they use that ending for all the characters involved, except Sonya's ends before Jarek gets up, and Jarek's ends before Jax shows up.

That ending is forever etched in my mind from both seeing it 3 times and that hilarious death scream.
All the endings in MK4 were pretty bad. Some even had the characters just outright die, like Reptile's ending. One of the silliest ones was Sub-Zero's ending, where after a rather cheesily animated scene of Scorpion saving Sub-Zero's life by killing Quan-Chi, and telling Sub-Zero that he'll no longer hunt him, Sub-Zero just whispers: "Arrright"

That same sound is at the end of Raidens ending as well. Sounds so odd. Just watched all of the endings, and I did not remember them being that bad at the time. But they're all pretty horrible.
After that the MK vs DC movie (all cut scenes ) started playing. I've never played it, they actually made the story make sense didn't they? I'm only about 5 minutes in, but I'm impressed.

Yeah the MK series kind of went downhill when the switched to 3d.
Bad gameplay aside that was about when arcades started to fade and i believe they had other company troubles too.

Midway was going bankrupt. WB saved the franchise, quite literally.
I am confused about the whole lack of fatalities thing seeing as how deathstroke just straight up murdered somebody.
Also, I never really notice how serialized characters are, I mean, I do, but it never bothers me nor do I normally pay attention. I've played the DoA fighters. But, wow, the boobs are on center stage in this game aren't they? Cat woman is certainly a little over the top.
I'm sad I missed this game though, the story at least seems really well done.

I honestly didn't hate MK4. They were trying out a TON of different things with its release. They maintained roughly the same combo concept the previous games had, and I was actually decent at the game with combos, particularly with Reiko.
It was also the first game with summonable weapons and interactables in the series, and the first with full voice acting for story.

In some ways, 4 was pretty respectable. But good lord the backgrounds were mostly terrible, as were the designs of most of the new characters. And some of the returning ones, for that matter.
Ironically, remaking Mortal Kombat 1 with MK4's engine sounds like something that probably would've done better at the time.

I really enjoyed it at the time, and found it a blast to play. I remember enjoying the endings at the time, or I think I did, and liked the new characters and fatalities that were there. It hit at the right time for me as I think it came out right around summer vacation or something. I know I had at least a week off of school and had friends over during the day playing it. It probably stands out in my mind because my GF at the time liked MK I found out when I got it.
Looking back at it now though, it just looks really bad.
I find I still enjoy MK3 from a game play perspective, sucking at beat em ups as I do I like the dial a combo system, and despite some weird character designs and lazy fatalities there's actually some good stage design in there.
When I finally made the move from Amiga to PC it was one of the first games I played.

In MK4s defense that's true for almost every PS1 game.
I'm playing MK9 now and the story is okay pretty good so far, the amount of extras is amazing, and the roster is big but the gameplay feels so clunky. Anyone had hands on with MKX? Is it smoother like Street Fighter or Killer Instinct or just as boxy feeling as 9?

No MK and Injustice will always have that feel. Like, their systems have their own unique flow, but it just dosen't feel, I don't know, comfortable? From an execution standpoint?
It's pretty much the only reason why MK isn't my favorite fighting game franchise.

There are only a handful of playable MK characters that I think are completely unsalvageable (or would require so much work they'd essentially be a different character).
Jarek, Hsu Hao, Kira, and Kobra are probably the only ones I'd drop for good. Mavado is salvageable but I'd drop the idea of the Red Dragons since the Black Dragons are already under-developed so why add a second group? (even though storywise I think they retcon'd it so Red Dragons were first). Taven and Daegon are also salvageable, but I'd still probably lean towards just dropping them.
Although perhaps I'm just biased against post-MK3 Black/Red Dragon stuff since I just realized every character I'd recommend dropping is directly connected to one or the other.
I still think Hsu Hao could be really funny as a recurring joke character, like Dan in Street Fighter. His design is just so ridiculous it seems like they could have some fun with him.

I know she wasn't supposed to be, but I always thought Li Mei looked like a pirate in Deception.

And the basis of her backstory doesn't seem bad if they worked on it a bit.
She'd need her own moveset though.
I loved Kobra, in all of his shittiness. It's like they put Dan into the game and weren't aware of it.
