Honestly I remember when I first saw MKX's fatalities for each character and I was like "Oh God, that's brutal... ugh."
Then I pulled it off on my first opponent after getting a close match and it was basically like "Yessss, get rekt!" I do remember one funny moment with two twitch streamers in a skype call together while playing the game, one was playing Takeda and used the initial fatality for the first time, the one where he scoops out your insides with his whip? The first time that happened in the streams, both players literally gasped and nervously chuckled at how brutally horrid it was, and most of the people in the chat acted like they were gonna vomit, lol.
Now any fatality that isn't the most brutal and grotesque thing ever is just gonna not phase me much. It's not real, and it's not gonna effect me any; plus I can stare at Johnny Cage's fatalities all day; they're just too good.
Nintendo's console version replaced sweat with blood and censored lots of the gore from the original MK. It was really jarring when my brother and I went to a friend's house and did a fatality and saw that it was merely an uppercut.
Sega Genesis was the only home console that you could turn on the blood and uncensored fatalities via a "cheat" code.
Small distinction but important when talking about the original MK home versions. Also, while blood and gore is a selling point for MK, it's not entirely unreasonable to say that the franchise has gone too far. I don't know if that's really the case, but some of those xrays make me cringe to watch. There's a fine line between blood and gore and torture porn, maybe MK is heading towards torture porn.
It's hardly torture porn, more like cartoon slapstick kinda gore. Like mature Looney Toons. I enjoy it as nothing more than fantasy. In GoW you chainsaw enemies in two, and in Rampage you eat and vomit tiny people. There's a disconnect because it's all goofy as hell. I can totally see why the more HD, bloody as hell modern fatalites can be gruesome, but I think you gotta take it as tongue-in-cheek. Cassie's selfie one is great example because it's just goofy.
As for feeling grossed out by family fatalites, keep in mind people die and get controlled by the evil side all the time in this game. It's not unreasonable these guys would end up fighting and maybe having to do undesirable acts on each other.

Besides, non-story fights and towers are all held in the Edge Of Tomorrow universe where the recently Fatalitied wake up later healed, refreshed and super-salty about being viciously murdered.
I've been with this franchise since the beginning, and the blood and Fatalities never really bothered me-- they were typically pretty goofy and over-the-top, and despite the realistic-for-their-day digitized graphics, they never seemed that "real."
More recently, though, it feels like we're entering uncanny valley territory. I don't even notice the blood, but the camera angles and close-ups along with the more sophisticated graphics have pushed things a bit from when I was growing up.
But what really makes me uncomfortable are the x-rays. I've had... experiences, let's say, that kind of make me wince when I see them zoom in and show things moving in ways they were never intended to.
They strike me as kind of pointless, though. Unless I'm mistaken, despite rendering the shattering of arms, legs, etc. in such excruciating detail, the victims are all just fine a moment later. Unlike some games, there's no limp, no weak spot to work over... they're solely there to make you uncomfortable, or at best for wow factor.
That said, I can just tolerate the x-rays for the sake of everything else that comes in the package, but I'd love a way to turn off the spectacle of it. Keep the moves, since they're part of the gameplay-- perhaps a key element, even-- but make it so the moves don't go close-up and maybe don't illustrate the bones shattering.
What's funny about all of this is how it almost never makes it into other media. If anyone outside of the players sees something with the MK brand, they're usually getting a product sanitized to Street Fighter levels or better. As such, it's kind of funny/interesting/weird that despite this, the developers are so inclined to push things so much further.

All I was pointing out was that no version really completely censored the game or gave you the option to turn off fatalities they've always been a core feature.
Even in the "no blood" versions (Megadrive without cheat, native SNES) you could do fatalities and with the exception of sub zero on the megadrive, they weren't just uppercuts.
For the SNES:
Sub zero froze his opponent then smashes him, Scorpion's fatality was uncensored, so was Sonya and Liu Kangs, Johnny Cage sticks his foot through the chest of his opponent, Raiden electrocutes his opponent and turns them to ash, Kano just punches through their chest. You could also knock opponents down in to the pit.
For the Megadrive (without cheat):
You couldn't knock opponents in to the pit iirc. Sonya, Scorpion and Liu Kang have the same as SNES and Arcade (though no screaming on burning), Johnny Cage boots the opponent to the other end of the screen with his shadow kick, Kano punches his hand in their chest and I swear pulled out something black (but everything I read online has him just plunging his hand in then holding it up), Raiden zaps them and they fall over, Sub zero just does an upper cut.
It looks like some care and thought was put in to the 'censored' fatalities of the SNES, whereas for the megadrive it seems like they figured 'fuck it', and put in lazy ones assuming everyone would just use abacabb or dullard.
And yeah, I'm in agreement with the "it's all ridiculously tongue in cheek" people. I take it with the same humour that the Simpson kids take Itchy and Scratchy.
I really wouldn't mind a gore-less mode for MK. No fatalities and no zooming in on the x-rays.
The original MK fatalities weren't even that gory. Like, the bigger shock to me was that you were actually killing your opponents at all. At the time i was just used to Guile beating people up and then telling them to be a family man. The fact that the loser was murdered was crazy to young me. It was never "eww gross he punched his head off", but "man, poor sub-zero is dead now". Still, I would let a 9 year old play MK1 way sooner than I would let them play MKX. It's never too early to start loving Sub-Zero.
I maxed out my level with ESF last night. I'm assuming if I switch to another faction, the level will reset? Figure I'll switch over to Lin Kuei because they're always going to win the faction war stuff, max that out and get whatever trophies for winning the war, and then work on the others before heading back to ESF.
Air to surface missile faction kill is kind of funny. Like a Wiley Coyote cartoon gone wrong.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
I did an internet search and April 26th seems to be the concensus for the Masked Murderer pack. May 5th is a Tuesday, so that does make more sense, but maybe it's like you said and PC is getting shafted for some reason.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
What D'Vorah does to Mileena in the story mode has to be one of the most horrifying things I've seen in a game. Especially because of Mileena's screams of agony as parasitic insects burrow into her flesh. I got a little sick from that one.

I think it's pretty unfair to call MKX torture porn. Have you guys seen slasher flicks lately?

Some of the fatalities in MKX are easily on par with contemporary slasher films. Have you seen My Puppet?
See, that fatality in particular seems comical to me. Anatomy doesn't work that way.
That one, in particular, seems like it could have been a little more comedic in the execution (if you'll pardon the pun).
Come on Kenshi, you've already got him suspended by the rib-cage to wrist/ankle tendons, you might as well make him dance a jaunty little jig while you're at it. Could have different dances for different characters maybe...

I'd say it would make more sense if it was someone more evil than Kenshi. Maybe if during the story he became possessed by a demon in his sword like one of his variations alludes at it would fit. I think a better fit for Kenshi would have just been a telekinetic rib cage crush with the bones piercing the lungs and heart. Just lift up and CRUNCH with some coughing wet hacks before the floating kombatant just goes limp in the air.
Some of the fatalities make me cringe, but I usually just laugh at them. I am a pretty big fan of gruesome horror movies, though, so that may be why. Not really stuff like Hostel, but just good freaky shit. Like the V/H/S or ABCs of Death movies.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
So here's an interesting thing; if you double-tap "up" when selecting a character variation, it'll hide your cursor. If you then press button 2, you'll play as the "neutral" no variation version of your character.
Honestly, I like the Brutalities more than the Fatalities anyway. They are much faster and a bit more gratifying, plus they give more points when you're climbing towers.

Inferno Scorpion is something else. His bnb's are so easy to pull off. 30+% no-meter combos are possible with a little bit of practice and relatively easy compared to other characters. Plus he has great vortex if you can learn to link your combos with teleport punch.

Yesterday went much smoother with regard to connections. Ping indicator is still useless but the actual matches were pretty stable and did not feature a ton of input lag. Although I realized when someone hit "select new fighter" that I can only do incredibly basic 3 hit combos and a few specials with anyone other than ferra/torr. Even there the longest I can chain is maybe a 4 hit. A lot of what I am doing it just mix and cross-ups using armored charge, roll, and other specials to keep people guessing. Really need to focus on learning actual punishing combos and appropriate windows for reversals etc. I tend to respond late to a blocked teleport attack for instance and end up still taking damage from their followup since I waited a hair too long to release block and go on the offensive.
High Voltage are now claiming that the patches which have already hit consoles will make it to the PC version in the "coming weeks".
That just fills me with optimism for the port's future.
Yeah this is one of the few times I've really regretted going PC first, and now I'm stuck because I already dropped $80 on the game and the Kombat Pack so I'm not about to spend the same amount on the console version.

Even then you could do a fatality on both censored versions, usually pretty violent even without blood!
This page has a couple: http://www.sidequesting.com/2011/04/mortal-kombats-best-censored-fatalities/
Youtube has them all. I've still no idea what Kano rips out of his opponents chest on the mega drive, i remember it looking like a police helmet.
MK is all about the blood and gore, it always has been. I see zero reason to tone this down.
