Doesn't it control similarly to GTA? I thought GTA-style games controlled fine with mouse and keyboard, although I haven't ever played GTA (planning on getting the complete pack during the winter sale).

I want to know this too. What I usually end up doing with these kind of games is using the controller for driving and KBAM while on foot. But frankly, that's a pain in the ass.

I never, ever use controllers for games, which has been a major impediment to my actually using my PS3. I find them foreign, almost alien objects.

Sleeping Dogs controls okay on mouse. The word "okay" is very deliberate. There's mouse smoothing, the sensitivity is low (and if turned up, messes up the driving), and in general it feels like the designers couldn't decide if the mouse should control the camera or player movement, leading to a slightly uncomfortable mix of both (not helped by the very close camera, which would be an issue for me regardless of controller or mouse). That said, it's perfectly playable, and I've been having a lot of fun with it using purely KBAM. It just 'feels' like a console experience ported to PC - well ported, but ported nonetheless.

Yes. It's been a long time though. Played a few games of Half-life Tron back in college when we could get people together to try it.

I started my first Zeboyd game today (I know, I know, I'm slow to getting to games). I started with Breath of Death. It's like they took everything that's annoying about JRPGs and fixed it. It's criminal how cheap they've sold these for, because this is BETTER, mechanically, than almost any JRPG that I've played.

So what is this Big Picture thing supposed to be?

I don't understand how it'd even work. I mean, I'd love to play my PC games on my TV, since they're currently both in teh same room, but I'm not gonna get that long of an HDMI cable to run the things to each other. How could Steam work on a TV, unless it came built in? And even then, it'd have to stream info from you pc to the tv, which seems no small feat and would require a lot of bandwidth.

Or am I totally misunderstanding what it is?

    I've been waiting for this.

    Intensely

It'll be especially nice to finally be able to read Achievement pop-ups, which are super tiny on my big TV.

I know I'm a couple of pages late to this, but I am also very much so looking forward to this.
My computer is in my living room, and is hooked to my 55" tv and to a monitor.
I love using the big screen for gaming, but steam is almost impossible to use.

No, that's just dead space 1's port. Mouse control is not good.

Well, first step in trying to use my PC on my TV more often is complete. I picked up a wireless keyboard and mouse tonight at Best Buy. The keyboard I'm not sure of yet, it's a bit smaller than my old one and has little square buttons instead of my old cushy kinds. The mouse is cool though - it's got 2 buttons on my thumb which should be somewhat helpful and it claims to use lasers which somehow seems more futuristic than my old mouse.

Maybe some folks disagree, but I thought it was miserable. The mouse controls are very, very slow/low sensitivity and it just feels... off. Like it's halfway between controlling the camera and the player. It's weird. I failed the tutorial chase sequence 4 times before I gave up on it. It's SO much better with a controller. It doesn't play so much like GTA or Saint's Row (which I played with KBAM). It's less of a shooter, and much more of a third person action/brawler. Much closer to Batman or Uncharted, actually.

Hmm... thank you both for the opinions. Games like this I tend to pick up on console, but I end up missing out on the great online community for PC ports (MODS), e.g. Saints Row 2. Ah well, a few paycheques to go before I can comfortably afford to pick it up so I've got some time to mull it over.

It's definitely worth it on PC. With maxed graphical settings (which aren't too taxing on moderate hardware), and the high-res texture pack, it's pretty fantastic looking. No reason not to enjoy a console-type experience on a superior platform =]

The KBAM controls killed dead space for me. So much so that I haven't even bothered grabbing DS2 at 5 bucks even though ppl say it's fine. So much frustrating fighting the controls rather then the monsters.

Valve has been sort of insanely busy this week.

    -Released Mann vs Machine
    -Released details/beta Test new Community
-Released Co-op Portal 2 map maker
    - Announced Saxxys (Source Filmmaker awards)
    - CSGO trailer/ Beta for anyone that's preordered
    - Dota 2 Spectator mode released
    - Announced that Dota 2 documentary thing

Kinda makes me want to go tinfoil hat and try to somehow tie this into the hypetrain for HL3. Just a little.

I have kind of skimmed the conversation, but just wanted to say that Sleeping Dogs is the best technical PC game this year. They put a lot of effort into the PC version and it really shows. Great optimization, a wealth of options, etc. I've heard the mouse controls can be a bit wonky, so hopefully they figure that out. I went directly to xbox controller, as I tend to do with this sort of game. Also, it takes a lot to impress me on this front - see my impassioned bitching in the Dark Souls thread.

Well, I can't say that I have played every single game this year - but I have played quite a few, and Sleeping Dogs manages to look better, be more optimized, and have more options than every single one. It's obvious that a lot of work went into it. A wonky mouse is easily fixed (and I'll probably try out the keyboard controls later on just to see exactly how it is). A "wonky mouse" being the worst that can be mustered when most PC games ship with a few basic options is pretty good.

If you have a list of every PC game this year and would like to buy them for me, I'd be happy to review all of them for you and give a full, objective opinion. I can only really talk about what I've played, though. I suppose I should have said "that I've played" but I guess I just assumed that no one would assume I was trying to speak for every single PC release this year, whether I had played it or not. Always someone more pedantic, though.

For all AA uses in games, I've been using this: http://mrhaandi.blogspot.com/p/injectsmaa.html

According to GAF, it offers the best AA with the lowest performance loss, and considered a superior alternative to most in-game FXAA.

It works just fine with Sleeping Dogs.

Just a general PSA, browsing the new community tab for a decent chunk of games is a good way to get things spoiled. Upvoted images of a lot of endings or big story moments, just off my recently played there's Darkness 2 and Alan Wake's American Nightmare. And these are part of the general collage that's meant to get you to visit the page, not from just visiting the direct game hub. Hopefully they add some sort of tagging feature to the screenshots so spoiler moments can maybe be kept seperate.
