In honor of FTL's release tomorrow I will be giving away some copies. To enter, regular rules apply. You must PM me your most epic team up, whether it be in a game, work or some other challenge in life. Best entries get a copy of FTL. All entries must be in by 4pm EST Friday afternoon.
It's Christmas Eve in Bangor, WA. It's an odd year and we actually had snow so that's nice, but I am on duty. What's worse, we're going underway on January 2. Still worse, the VSFD for the #2 Drain Pump is broken and the replacement just showed up. Since I have another electrician on duty with me, we decide to get 'er done. The part came in a pretty big crate so we crack it like an egg and pull out the part - a 2' cube of metal, weighing about 150# and full of sensitive electronics. This is already seeming like a bad idea but we're committed; can't leave this out in the weather, and in any case we're going to sea in a week. So me and my fellow EM man up and carry this awkwardly shaped, handhold-lacking chunk of metal down the pier, across the brow and to the weapons shipping hatch.
Now it becomes really awkward due to the angle, but it's still a better proposition than the LET without rigging gear. We get down the hatch, down a ladder (we call stairs ladders on boats, but this ladder was at an angle) and do the easy part - walking ~300' aft to the engine room, including a maneuver through the watertight door. After going down another angled ladder we finally realize what should have been obvious from the beginning - the only path from here is a vertical ladder. After a bit of swearing we procure a random length of rope (not weight tested in any way) and haphazardly finagle the VSFD down the ladder, with my buddy underneath guiding it as I play out the line... but it worked. The actual replacement is a breeze, a matter of four bolts and maybe 16 amphenols and we congratulate ourselves on a job well done - until we realize that the broken VSFD still needs to get off the boat. To make a long story short (TOO LATE) we took the same path in reverse and eventually just left the broken VSFD in the splintered remnants of the shipping crate to survive the elements.
As reward for a job well done, I got to relieve the SEO and stand another 6 hours of watch; at least it wasn't the midwatch.
VSFD=Variable Shunt Field Device, controls speed of a pump's motor
Drain Pump=How we get water out of the people spaces - fairly important to a submarine
Brow=How you get from the pier to the boat; ours was actually a zigzagging contraption that went about 30', then dogglegged and did another 30', then went across to the boat. Since it was low tide the trip down was easy, but up was a sonuvabitch
LET=Logistics Escape Trunk, normal method of ingress/egress
SEO=Shutdown Electrical Operator
Midwatch = 2330-0530
Finding adequote pictures=a bitch
My best team up I can think of right now was playing a game of Flash Point (board game) with 5 people on advanced in the Urban Structures office building. Fire had spread throughout the building, walls were being destroyed left and right, and we had multiple people stuck behind fire. We planned ahead, played every character to their strength and rescued all but one person (you're allowed to lose 3, the 4th is game over) and put out nearly all the fires. We ended the game with 21 of the 24 damage counters used! One more explosion probably would have finished us off, but we rolled well and managed to keep the fires from spreading.
Everyone felt like they had accomplished something great at the end of that game. It was just a good, fun time.
About a year and a half ago, one of my brothers (I'm the oldest of four, this was Three of Four, or Brother #2 from my perspective) got married. He and his wife had met playing World of Warcraft, and incorporated a number of appropriately geeky themes into their wedding, including the WoW Level-Up sound played after the minister announced "You may kiss the bride." Clearly a wedding like this required an appropriate toast given by the groomsmen (my other brothers and me).
Cue the Reception. The three of us walked to the center of the room, got the mic, and shushed the room for our speech. I led off. [REDACTED], we've know your husband a long time. His whole life, in fact. So what we know, is that he is (my brothers join in here, as we switched to an a capella freestyle)
"Never gonna give you up,
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you.
Never gonna make you cry,
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you."
Yes, we teamed up to Rick-roll our brother at his wedding. Fortunately we all have good singing voices, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway. I'm pretty sure that when we're old and grey, we'll be laughing over that story at family gatherings, and grandchildren will look confused, wondering what a rick-roll was and why Grandpa and the great-uncles all think it's still so funny.
@handgimp and @shdwcaster won on stories, @arcsyn won because Matt and Justin love board games and so that struck a chord for being a part of FTL's inspiration!
Awesome! Thank you gents! Classy folk right here, I shall get my ship exploded many times tonight in your honor!
FTL is amazing. If anyone is on the fence, it's only $9 on the developer's site and it gives you both a DRM free version and a Steam key. http://www.ftlgame.com/
I haven't gotten to play it yet, and it's missing Xen so it's not a complete replacement yet, but so long as the actual narrative has remained unchanged, I think it stands a chance of sufficing. Obviously if it's poorly paced, or the voice acting is too distracting, it might turn some people off; but the original Half-Life already turns people off due to it's age, so any port in the storm, I guess.
I just got the end of FTL and I beat the Flagship. But apparently I didn't? I beat a big ship that left me barely together and then it told me the Flagship was still alive and still had to be beaten. That's kind of really frustrating. I'm not sure what happened.
Also, I just got a 50% coupon for Anno 2070 if anyone wants it!
@AnteCantelope gifted me To The Moon. It is lovely. I will second APOD in saying that everyone should play it. It really did a fantastic job of making me care about the characters. So thanks a lot for a very unique and wonderful game.
Played up to the first turret in Black Mesa. It was worth the wait. This is what HL: Source should have been.
They've stayed quite true to the original game, which I was hoping for. The only noticeable difference I've come across so far is that BM doesn't rain headcrabs on you during the elevator ride, which is a change I'm actually alright with.

@Viking just dropped The Walking Dead collection on me when he learned I don't have it.
I'm now looking forward to making bad decisions and sacrificing those around me so that I may live another moment.
On my first run, I lost all but my pilot by the middle of sector 2. I didn't make it to sector 3.
On my second run, I died to a boarding party, one of whom was my own engine room crewman!
I made it to sector 5 on my last run and died in an asteroid field in a close fight with a pirate ship.
Gonna try the engi ship I unlocked tomorrow. What a game!
Question: If I buy FTL, can I effectively live out a fantasy of being Capt. Mal Reynolds?
From the previews / WTF Is... of it, I get a strong Farscape vibe from it. Mostly the idea of starburstjumping after each encounter. Also, it apparently has aliens, which Firefly does not.
That said, my first ship will absolutely be Serenity; and my second Moya. Then perhaps White Star or something.
I'm playing FTL on EASY and I got a fourth crewmember so I was all excited, then I warped into a solar flare region and fire broke out EVERYWHERE and two died before I could vent all the air from the rooms that had fire. Then I got boarded and lost my newest crewmember, so now I'm in the third sector (map?) and I've been just barely squeaking by with my one guy piloting and jumping away. I've got no scrap left and my ship is nearly dead.
i actually just had a really good game. had like 6 or 7 crew, but then i got boarded by 4 mantis, and that was that
Yes, I had an easy run too. Seven crew members and some nice upgrades. I almost made it to the end of sector 4, when I ran out of fuel and couldn't do shit. I hit my distress beacon and was promptly shot down by pirates.
Protip: Keep an eye on your fuel.

However, it's probably the buggiest version of the game.
Though, if you don't have the dresses/weapons DLC for the consoles...well, it's a simple INI tweak to enable that in the PC version.
I'm not sure I would consider it to be a complete replacement. There's quite a bit that's changed.

Black Mesa: Episode 1. Don't worry. I'm sure it'll come out before Half-Life 3. Probably.

I've never heard of an externally-installed mod on Steam that has Steam achievements. Is this for real?

Also got some SMNC stuff as well.

There's a torrent out there. I wasn't going to bother because I didn't want the game to be listed as a non-Steam shortcut.
But apparently it does register as a Steam game, and also includes achievements?

I know. Damnit people. Borderlands 2 unlocks in 4 days. I don't need more games right now.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes or will I need to roll back?

Seemed like a good price for a crazy teenage girl. Better than most Craigslists, anyway.
