Does your state have early voting?

You probably qualify for some sort of dispensation. My grandmother was able to vote from home on an absentee ballot for the last ten years of her life, I'd suggest contacting your Supervisor of Elections (or equivalent position).

NJ doesn't do in-person early voting, but anyone can submit a request for a mail-in absentee ballot. I think I may just do that. NJ is a lock for Obama, Sen. Bob Menendez is fairly safe too, and there aren't any state senate or legislature seat up. But there is a chance (although not likely) that I can dump Jon Runyan as my congressman. That right there would be enough motivation to make me fill out the request. The very strong likelyhood that we'll have a gay marriage ballot measure throws an anvil on that scale.

I just printed up absentee ballot request forms for me and my wife. smug.png

Like the guy said it's about business. No need to politicize your catering.

Also cancelling or not awarding contracts to people because of their political views is the exact opposite side of the coin from the accusation that you show favoritism towards supporters. It's kind of a dangerous road to venture too far down as a political candidate.

Unless we're talking about union shops versus non-union shops, which is a different can of worms.

Again, I didn't mean to imply this. I can see how it can be read that way. Contracts shouldn't be awarded to supporters only. I just find the shirt incredibly unprofessional and think they could have asked him to bounce.

Just as a bit of information, I'm pretty sure absentee ballots are not even looked at unless the margin of victory is super small, so it kinda doesn't even really count as voting, in most instances.

This might/probably varies by state though.

I think it shows more class that they just took it in stride and didn't take any action about it. The shirt says more about the individual wearing it than anything. If that guy is comfortable looking like an misinformed goose then so be it.

Yeah it does vary radically between states, like Oregon and Washington only do voting by mail. Although I don't know of any state that doesn't count absentee ballots, provisionals maybe, but not absentee.

I'm under the vague impression that you're correct. Which kinda bothers me. But if it's not close enough for my vote to have mattered, I'm not really that concerned.

Oh, yeah. I forgot about provisionals. I think that's what I was thinking about, too. I guess that makes alot more sense since the public outcry out be deafening if the military's vote wasn't being counted every time.

Provisional Ballots are counted (like, how many there are) but the votes on them are only tabulated if necessary.

    Absentee ballots are absolutely counted.

Untrue -- all states count absentee ballots. I know because I've had to request them for electoral targeting. Not all states count them in the same way, though; some states count them on election day, some states count them after election day but before the secretary of state certifies the results. Some states record the vote in the official tally with the precinct from whence the vote originated, while some states count all absentee ballots from a particular municipality together and report them as a single absentee precinct.

Provisional ballots, now -- hardly anyone ever counts their provisional ballots.

    I think that's a common misconception.

But think of it this way: if it were true, military votes wouldn't count. And what American politician would allow that to go on without trying to get some sweet sweet positive press over trying to end it?

I don't think there would've been anything wrong with OFA asking the guy to leave with the shirt. That is a remarkably shitty way to treat customers.

Now, certainly if they canceled it just because he happened to be a Republican, I could see that being silly. But the shirt was a bit far.

And of course the government just helped him grow his business...

Yeah, the appropriate response here is no response at all. The guy looked like a tool, he just cost his company the business of any Democratic organization that ever needs catering, and (hopefully) any number of other potential clients who now know that this guy is an unprofessional jag-off. Obama's campaign looks good by virtue of not taking the bait.

Self-compassion and resentment are perhaps the greatest western sins.

Seriously, a politician points out that the Job Creators Most Holy didn't take out Hitler or create the infrastructure necessary for them to make any profits and they are still completely rumpraw about it? Scum.

I don't think this is likely to hurt their business much. It's not like Iowa is a deep blue state, so there'll be plenty of people who agree with the guy. The exposure will almost certainly be larger than their previous customer base, so it's pretty much impossible for this to cost them more business than it gets them.
