Cheapo ThinP3 Player Recommend-me-do

So, if you live in the UK, you will have noticed that the sun has begun to shine again. Yeay! As such I'm going to start walking back into work again (about 70min trip) - and need an MP3 player to accompany me on the journey. As I probably won't be wearing a jacket I need a teeny-tiny MP3 player to fit into my pocket (no bigger than my GBA Micro).

But as my last MP3 player is a 64 meg piece of shit, I turn to your wisdom for help. You are so wise G&T.

I would like the following(if possible):
  • As cheap as possible (<£60)
[*} Small, size of a lighter or less
  • I want to listen to Audio Books, Podcasts, etc - an ability to resume from where you left off, that isn't just pause it all day long.
  • 2-4 gig is the sweet spot size wise - though the price limits that, obviously.
  • Just realised: If it isn't an iPod, in needs to be drag-and-drop, I have an iBook, and no windows access at all. Thanks for all the help guys you are awesome.

I know I am asking for the moon on a stick, but thats my "dream."

It would be awesome if we could avoid a iPod flame war too

    So far I'm torn between:

An iPod shuffle 1 gig and tiny. (I use itunes already so that isn't an issue) About £50

Or a version of this random thing HERE - which I've not found on the web but is similar to the amazon link. It's sold in Maplins, and has either 1gig or 2gig of inbuilt memory - an Mini-SD slot to take another 1gig I have lying around and a fm radio, and microphone. Charged by USB. For £40/£60 for smaller/larger verisons.

Which is tempting - but I;ve never heard of it.And worried it may fall apart. Heres a picture

In terms of the whole, "worry it will fall apart because you've never heard of it" thing, I wouldn't be so trusting that the ipod shuffle wont. I owned the previous generation 1gb shuffle, and within 6 months the headphone jack stopped outputting the left side of the audio (Also, I didn't bother dealing with warranty crap because I usually make do as long as I can even if something is broken)

Maybe they fixed that this generation, but as I paid $180CAD for a 1gb and the new 1gb sells for $85 CAD I'm assuming they had to cut corners somewhere, thus dropping the quality.

Um. You know flash memory just keeps getting cheaper, right?

I love my JetAudio Cowon A2, so I would recommend that brand to anybody. Since you want small form factor, check out the one on Newegg. I know it's over your price limit, but sometimes you just gotta pay the money to get good hardware. They have cheaper ones, I'll dig one up for ya.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855603833 $119

EDIT: Okay here's a cheaper one, although if I was going to recommend one it would be the one above, not this one (it's a newer model).

    Ebay.

I bought an Ipod look-a-like (but does more than an IPOD) for £27 (inc. P&P)

    It's supposed to be 4gb, but it's only 2gb (common - you get a partial refund - which I haven't yet)

Looks EXACTLY the same as an Ipod Nano. Does Mp3, AMV (video) ebook, phonebook, games - the lot.....FN sweet. Mine took 1 and a half weeks to come from HongKong....I bought it from sevenmp4 on ebay.uk

Thanks for this - I'm in the UK though - so need stuff to be available here. I want to avoid international shipping if possible as I don't want to risk import duty.

The Jet Audio does look nice but I've never seen it here. I'll have a look about.

I only walk in once or twice a week - but I work at uni (on a Phd) so I have flexible hours, and never get anything done till after lunch - so it's a good way to wake up.

    I'm in the UK too.

These guys sell to the UK and get lots of business because they're smart...between the Mp3 player and my £140 touch-screen PDA phone from Hong-Kong, i've paid absolutely NOTHING on import tax / customs.

On both packages they've been marked as being "toys" with a ridiculously low value - hense customs do not check the package...thusly you pay no import-tax!

I've heard enough horror stories about knock off iPods from ebay - literally ten minutes ago a friend was explaining that she did the same as you, and it was awful.

It's not something I want to risk. For instance I would be extremely pissed if it was only 2 gig and I wanted 4.

I'm not against importing, I bought my DS Lite from lik-sang. it's just I need it in the next few weeks, and I'm travelling a lot. So I need a quick delivery.
Hey, Sony - Fuck you - RIP Lik-Sang

If I were you, I'd just forget all the bother and go with an iPod shuffle. I mean, if you already use iTunes (and its podcasts feature), iPod is the best choice.

I've owned two Sandisk players, a 256mb one and just recently got a 2gb video playing one, and I've had no problems with either. They're a real solid budget brand.

    I am tempted.

Can a shuffle pause an 1hr long podcast/audiobook say, and resume from there later?

I don't just mean pressing pause though. I mean as in turn it off, and come back a few days later? Or even better after playing a few other songs?

(Also - I've watched that guys reviews before - he's actually quite funny, and yeah thats basically exactly what I don't want.)

Just realised: If it isn't an iPod, in needs to be drag-and-drop, I have an iBook, and no windows access at all. Thanks for all the help guys you are awesome.

Go the Shuffle route. It's so small! Plus if it breaks before a year is out it's under warranty. And it'll all work fine with your iBook. No screen though...

I'd be really really tempted to get a nano just for the screen. If saving more money isn't a viable option there's always the apple refurb store and they come with a one year warrenty too.

Refurbished iPod nano 2GB - White
Up to 14 hours of music playback
    Original price: £129.00
    Your price: £65.00

Egad. Thats tempting. Thats definitly in the running.

But then you get stuck on the feature creap ladder. Only £20 more for 4gig. So tempting.

Anyone have a nano? Sorry to keep going on about it - but if it can remember where you are up to in audiobooks and resume there, then I'm sold. Say you can bookmark a slot or something.

So I can listen to an audiobook and then resumel the next day and so on.

Yup, you can resume the audiobook or podcast the next day. You can even stop the podcast, play some tunes, and go back to the podcast and it starts where you left off.

Gold. And with that I'm sold - gona buy a 4gig refurbish iPod nano for £85 (fucking feature creep!)

But then I have everything I want. 4gig, and decent audiobook play.

Sure it's first gen and gona get scratched (don't care), and the battery only has to last till I get to uni so not I'm not too worried about the "refurbished status".

    You are legends guys.

Glad we could help. I have the 1st gen Nano and while it is all scratched to hell, I can still see the screen perfectly when it's on. It's held up pretty well, since I have had it since the week it was announced.

Right. Spending no more money for, I dunno, forever.

EDIT: Yeah cheers for all the info. I'm not much of an iPod fan, but it seems the best fit for my needs. Lets see how it works out.
