The Christopher Nolan was "wasted" argument only carries the tiniest of weight in the sense that he hasn't been overwhelmingly prolific. He's only done about 7-8 films that people might be familiar with, in the span of a decade or so. That's not terrible in terms of output, but it's also not, for example, Danny Trejo levels, either, where Trejo would get involved with anybody with $100 doing an art film.

That said, Chris Nolan is only in his 40s, and conceivably has decades more of filmmaking ahead of him. So what's being lamented here, the "What could have been??" talk, is about somebody who has barely even gotten started.

True, and I'm not wringing my hands exactly, but what I am saying is that David Cronenberg is right in saying it's not the kind of thing guys like Chris Nolan need to be devoting too much time to. Just about every great director out there has one or two mercenary jobs on their CV, especially at the start of their career. I just don't want to see someone like Nolan turn into "Mr. Comicbooks."

Mercenary jobs don't have to be a waste for those involved. Only hacks waste good opportunities and Batman is a good opportunity to any director with a brain.

I always thought of Tony Scott as a Michael Bay impersonator.

But still... a really, really good Michael Bay impersonator. The first time I watched Crimson Tide, I totally thought it was a Bay flick.

Tony Scott was Bay if he had any talent besides blowing things up.
Okay I just need to get this off my chest.

My father thought John Wayne's The Green Berets was a good Vietnam war movie, while he though Full Metal Jacket was not.

    What. The. Fudge.

That is bizarre.. did he serve?

    No.

Netflix kept recommending it to me, so I finally saw Sunny. This is one of the funniest films I've seen in recent years, and it has a very sincere touch to it, I kept thinking back to the Sandlot/Stand By Me in how it balances the funny with the character development. The story revolves around a forty something lady who has a very good life as a housewife and mother, but is a bit unfulfilled and when visitng her mother inthe hospital one day she comes across her old friend from high school, who is dying of cancer. Her last wish is to get the whole group back together before she dies in a few months, and from there we flashback to Korea in the 80's, in what seems to be 1986. You have the past and present flesh out the story as we see how the group came to be, and where they ended up now and reuniting. I thought the film was going to be some kind of Sisterhood of Traveling Pants thing, but it's not, at least as far as I can tell having never seen that film. It's got foul language, and really shows how teenagers act.

It also has this truly great fight scene, where it's the girl group vs another rival group from another school in the backdrop of the military and activists fighting all to the music of Joy's Touch by Touch. This scene pretty much sums up the movie in 4 minutes:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl4-StMGYAw

On top of that it even has the ladies in the present beating up some high school bullies, and truly beating them up, it's hilarious.

If you loved the 80's, you'll like this film. If you liked the Sandlot, you'll like this film. If you like comedies, you'll like this film. Hell, if you liked The Man from Nowhere you'll like this film, despite being a completely different genre.

    With the whole Cronenberg/Nolan thing;

Besides it being a silly statement from Cronenberg considering the quality of Nolan's batman films, didn't Nolan originally take on those films to get experience making big budget films in preparation for making Inception? Plus, without the financial success of TDK, he probably wouldn't have had the pull to get something like Inception made, at least not on the same scale.
I don't see how someone could have a problem with a talented director making good films for the purpose of gaining more artistic freedom.

No, he's just weird like that. Love him to death, but it's like he's playing devil's advocate all the time.

I have a friend who's 15 years older who when watching Nolan's Batman movies or Craig's Bond movies, just wants to see cool gadgets. I can't tell him he's wrong for wanting to watch a movie a certain way, but I feel like he kind of sets the bar really low on what he's expecting.

If it was it's not anymore. That's the one I was hoping for, too. Or maybe Days of Thunder since that's one of the few films of his I haven't seen before.

Also: How did I not know that Tony Scott did Spy Game?

EDIT: AHA! HBO Go has Days of Thunder.

So, what do you guys think are the chances of us getting Star Wars Blu-rays that don't have the most recent changes? Like, I have an incredible problem with Hayden Christiansen being in Return of the Jedi. However, with my son being born soon.. I feel like I need to have copies of these movies.

But I really don't want the newly butchered versions. :(

    Guys, go see ParaNorman.

It's still a kids movie but parents will get a huge kick out of it. It might not as "deep" as some adult movies but boy did I enjoy the ending.

I eagerly await Laika's next project, especially with
how they animated the clouds and Agatha.

Ok, so just saw Bourne Legacy, and now I'm miffed by the mixed reviews it's gotten. This is a legit good movie. Spoilery stuff below, but I'll just say right off the bat that I hope it does well enough for a sequel. In today's age of lazy reboots, I'm actually shocked they didn't just say "Fuck it, let's remake the Bourne Identity with a new Bourne." I mean yes, it isn't like the film is completely original given that it's a spinoff of an existing, and heavily popular, franchise, but at least they spun it off in a new and interesting way.
Pros for this movie are just about everything. To start with, there is some seriously good acting. Everyone in this movie, no matter how small the role, has serious chops and it shows. You know those scenes where you feel like, "Holy hell, everybody's bringing their A-game here"? Well, this movie has a lot of those. The action is very intense, and there's at least one scene that is pretty terrifying (the office shooting). Although the Bourne series has kind of always been about the fact that you can't hide from big brother, Legacy seems to take it to the next level. There is no "disappearing" The best you can hope for is a head start. This gets extra scary when they bring predator drones into play.

I didn't even have a problem with the the bad guy coming out of nowhere towards the end. In another film series, it may have felt contrived that there was another super-soldier program, and another super-soldier was a plane flight away, but in the Bourne series this is sort of par for the course. In fact, it would be kind of silly to assume there wouldn't be another super-agent lined up and ready to go.

The only con I guess would be the fact that movie is very open ending, and when it's all said and done, it feels a lot like Aaron Cross: Origins. We don't get the story, we just get a story. Cross needs something to help him keep running from his evil handlers. In the end, he gets that something. His ends up right where he started. No longer worried about his meds, but still a marked man on the run, and we have little reason to believe Norton and Co will let up anytime soon.

Yeah, it's not amazing but it feels like it should have at least gotten a Fresh rating on RT. The casting is fabulous (I'm loving Renner more and more in these kinds of roles, so here's hoping for a sequel) and it serves its entertainment purpose. My major caveats:
    1. I might scratch this gripe down to me only having seen the first Bourne movie like five years ago at the time, but I lost track a bit of all the names and relationships being thrown around in the opening sequence. Not the Alaska stuff, I think it establishes that he's on some training mission and the purpose is deliberately opaque for the moment. But I reached a point about 15 minutes in where I went "FUCK IT WHATEVER"

    2. Cross' reasons for wanting the chems was one of the most compelling and poignant parts of the movie but also felt a bit underdone? It's like in Iron Man 2 where you emotionally invested in Tony's health battle but then OOPS WE FIXED IT IN FIVE MINUTES ALL GOOD. I wish they'd played with the process and implications more and made it more of a conclusion centerpiece. [edit] As a side note I was thinking the exact same thing during this scene (and glad they played it the way they did).

    3. Da Terminator Chase sequence of doom and lack of a real confrontation made the ending simultaneously welcome and also abrupt. I agree one of the problems is this felt too much like a Part One of a bigger story (When the credits rolled I was actually surprised it was the end! I was expecting another scene at least). I can't speak for Ultimatum since I haven't seen it but Identity and Supremacy both had real confrontations in a character and story sense, with Bourne coming to terms with something about himself or interacting with someone from the organisation. I realise that's an easier construct when your protagonist is an amnesiac and their arc revolves around self discovery, but Legacy's conclusion felt really underwhelming.

Things that were pretty rad: Renner and Weisz make a great team and I really just want to see where they take these two. I was surprised Norton isn't in any of the other movies because he felt so at home in this movie. Basically the first 2/3 of the movie was good. All the action and chases were well done and I love a good "Oh shit" moment when Norton realises who they're dealing with. Cross' back story wasn't what I was expecting and I thought they did a good job taking that in a different direction. The cabin conversation scene also pretty cool, makes you realise how tightly wound these people are all the time.

Basically I left the cinema with two thoughts; 1. I really want to watch the Bourne Identity trilogy. 2. Can someone make a Hawkeye/Black Widow movie.

Even his 'purist' editions still have some of his own changes, and leave in a lot of Special Edition footage. Someone else has already done a DeSpecialized Edition of all three movies. Everything is 720p, but it's a damn sight better than the grubby laserdisc transfers on the theatrical DVDs.

I remember, back in 98 when the Special Editions were coming out (which, btw, I don't mind - the edits weren't terribly offensive back then, save for Han), Lucas claimed that after they did the remaster/restore for the original VHS tapes, they then used those remastered/restored prints to make the Special Edition, destroying the remaster job forever.

That made no fucking sense to me then, and it still doesn't to this day. We live in a world where multiple seasons of Star Trek were remastered by piece by piece recompositing and re-filming the negatives, but we can't get something out of 7-8 hours of Star Wars?

(Also, speaking of Remastering, someone should seriously redo Babylon 5 one of these days. The CGI used on the show could be done in Source filmmaker these days, and they still have the original widescreen transfers.)
