I have heard a LOT of negative stuff about FFTA. I haven't played it, obviously, since I don't have a GBA, but I have to say TRY THE ORIGINAL because all the complaints I hear are like "the fights all have these retarded judges that make you do shit like not fight with metal weapons or whatever" and that kind of arbitrary, annoying restriction does not happen in the original. In the original, it's anything-goes, and you can basically choose a wide variety of strategies and tactics and make them work.
The best example I know is myself and Musashi. As the names imply, I use highly defensive and self-preservative strategies, while Musashi's strategies are largely aimed at destroying the enemy so fast that they don't have time to kill you. Both of our strategies work, though, because we picked jobs and abilities according to our overall visions. The game basically lets you do what you want as long as you do it right and allocate your various resources (exp, jp, characters, money, etc) well out of battle and then employ sound tactics when you're in battle.
EDIT: Oh and also the storyline is a million times better than most of the stories in "main-series" Final Fantasy titles.
The only similarity, really, between FFTA and FFT was that they were both grid based strategy game, and that they were loosely in the same universe. Other than that, they're really different games, and I think they should be considered differently.

I kept comparing FFTA to the original Final Fantasy Tactics the whole time I was playing it, and found myself underwhelmed in so many ways. I mean, i'm sure it was a good game, but man, I was hoping for so much more.
Did anyone actually buy and play Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon (or whatever the title was)? It looked like fun, but there's only so many hours you can spend playing PS1 rpgs back then. It seemed like every month, there was a new rpg for the PS1 a person just HAD to try.
I made this thread while talking with Manifest about how G&T terrified me and that if I were to introduce such a thread into here that it would be turned to zombie cocks within a page.
I have been failed.
Also, my real answer is Knights of the Old Republic. I do love that game so much.

FF6 had a massive amount of fleshed out, interestesting chracters and an incredibly epic storyline full of drama and excitement.
Basically it was pretty much the most awesome thing ever.
by fleshed out characters you mean that yeti and that that guy that lived in the wild and a cat with batwings and a ninja that had a friend that died
and what I'm getting at was that a 5 minute scene for all but 4-5 characters is not character development
First, moogles are cute little teddy bears, not cats. Second, you missed the mime; the mime would've been better to use than the ninja, since the ninja did have a personality. Third, there are SIXTEEN characters and you picked the three most minor ones.
The game was structured so that whatever characters you took with you as your "main party" felt like they main characters of the game. There were so many character-specific events and side plots that you'd end up triggering over the course of the game that the characters you ignored, the game ignored. The characters you focused on, the game focused on. That was REALLY cool.

I always held a negative opinion of 9. I hate thieves. every RPG I've ever played that had a Thief class, I'll avoid it as much as possible.
So, of course, I had a very low opinion of Zidane.
(I realize its a dumb opinion, but its mine damn it)
FF9 was really good. It felt like it got swept under the rug because it was technically a PS1 game. I found some exploitable flaws in its combat system, but I was like 80% through when that happened, so it didn't ruin the game for me.

i beat the uber boss of ff9 completly on accident and was sort of disappointed
does anyone remember what ozma's story was, anyway?
Ozma had no story really, alos he was a luck based fight.
Defender. The majority of characters had a 20 minute background sidequest and that was it. That's all you got. That and a bit of dialog that was essentially the same for whichever character you chose. It's not a bad game, just very overrated.
Also, you could tell the fans were like "Ok, his is fine, but I want a Ps2 FF game". If I remember right, FF9 came out at the same time the Ps2 was first released. So yeah, it didn't get the credit it deserved.

Also, Kefka was a terrible villain holy fuck.
You know, I didn't mind Kefka. I don't like Amano's art style, and Kefka being a big faggy clown was not my taste.
I feel that there was a bit more than that. Maybe my memory is hazy since it was over ten years ago. I do remember that whatever character you liked seemed to have all these story events and characters you didn't use didn't.

you were supposed to do that to win
What was I supposed to do?
farm dragons for dragons crest, steal from everything to lvl up thievery and spam shock
also, know what boss you're going against and wear a corresponding armor

for some reason i don't picture defender calling that an exploitable flaw

Uhhhh...pretty much every Final Fantasy can be made horribly easy if you're willing to farm/grind/powergame. I'm talking about just playing through the game as normal, not rocketing yourself to level 99 with every secret item and shit.
I didn't use the tactic you described at all. I didn't farm/grind/powerlevel at all. I won based on a strategic/tactical choice, not a brute-force method of overpowering my party.
What I did was realize that healing-over-time from Regen is based on TURNS, not on actual TIME. So I put auto-regen and auto-haste on a bunch of my characters, which upped my attack ability considerably while also giving me some seriously overclocked healing. I wasn't totally unstoppable or whatever, but I did beat the last boss in one try because of the edge that I gained from that ability combination.
EDIT: Potatoe, I probably wouldn't even call that a flaw; pretty much all FF games have this unwritten rule where if you are willing to sit around and powerlevel, the game will let you win. It's a way to let low-skill players have a victory. They can't figure out how to use their limited resources to win a battle with a moderately-levelled party, so the game lets them trade in time and effort (grinding/farming/etc) to power themselves up and then it doesn't scale the boss battles, so it just gets easier the more you grind. If you powerlevel up to 99 in FF4, for example, you can beat the last boss just by holding the "A" button during the battle.

How long was 9? I can't remember. I just know I loaned it to a friend on thursday, and he came over and beat it on Sunday. Either he was bored as fuck, or FF9 is a bit short.

I'll take that as a victory I guess.

same here.
Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
That was FF9. It doesn't get enough credit; it was a great, great game.

i'm looking at the lit of ff9 characters on wiki...and i'm not convinced eiko is wearing anything to cover the (what should be) naughty bits

Every character has one job, and that's it
I really like those styles.
