At this point it is stale and terrible. I didn't even enjoy Dragon Quest 8, or FFX. I think I'm just done with games that follow that format, even if they do change it up a little.

You know what else is pretty mediocre? Fantasy books/movies. I guess we can add "/games" to that given what you just said.
But guess what? That doesn't make LOTR crappy.
FF was really solid, and that's why it has so many knockoffs. The fact that many of the me-too games aren't as good, well, that's just how it goes sometimes.
One really good thing about the FF series is that their games are actually pretty creative. Plotwise, OK, no. They're almost identical. But up until FF9, no two games shared the same world or characters or anything (No, "there is an engineer named Cid in a bunch of games" does not count.) But going beyond that, the combat/magic/character systems were all different. Every single one of them rewrote or seriously tweaked major gameplay systems. I mean, just pick, like, any three games in a row and look at them. I'll go first.
FF5 - Job system
FF6 - Espers/spell learning along with regular "classes" (which translated to "unique abilities for each character")
FF7 - Materia-based skills which were attached and linked to each on equipment in addition to stat-based level-ups and unique limit breaks
That's pretty fucking awesome that they've basically kept this innovation up for a series that's going into its 13th game.

I didn't play DQ8.
FFX was shitty. FF9 was not shitty. FF8 was shitty. FF12, according to what I hear on this forum and from people I know, is great.

the combat is incredibly bland in each final fantasy
it's either completely "you hit me then I hit you" or "wait until this bar fills up, then you can hit" 12 is the exception to this, but
Actually the combat in 12 is the "wait until the bar fills up and then you can do something" they just took out the whole "Lets fight like its some kind of painful line dancing"

I might try 12 down the line since it seems very different. Right now I am addicted to re-playing Wind Waker, this time trying to get everything I can.

Yeah, uh, it's partially turn-based and partially real-time ("active time" is the term they coined to describe this innovative blend), so what? That's one of the best ways to manage a system with so many choices but also keep things moving at a reasonable pace.
And as you've already noticed, 12 improves on even that formula.
I mean, look, it could be realtime; it could be like Warcraft 3 or something. Like, imagine that you have three or four heroes and you're fighting in an enclosed battlefield. That could work. But having 800 spells and powers at your disposal would get a little hard to manage if the game moved that fast.
tales of symphonia had a realtime, full motion battling system
you controlled a chosen character and set the strategies for the others, with the option of setting some of their attacks to a c-stick direction
and if you had friends they could control the other characters as well...i think
it took a bit to get used to...but it was pretty sweet

It starts off good, but the last 5-10 hours feel really rushed.

I was never able to get a higher score for Squirtle than of that one time I caught a shot of his ass.

FF12 plays like a dream. Except for some oddly missing spells (one level of Water, no earth spells), it's great.
I liked FF10. The story was pretty cool.

I'm slowly getting the hang of it

Got this from my uncle the same Christmas my parents got my brother and I the N64. I'm pretty sure he hates me.
It was actually pretty fun though. Only 4 tracks and a handful of "cars", iirc, but one of the secret racers was the N64 controller.
EDIT: Seriously though, Metal Gear Solid.
No wait, FF6
Or Chrono Cross
Maybe ZOE2
Oh! Super Mario RPG
Those are good games, and one of them is probably my favorite

and, on a slightly related note...i think i will do my persuasive speech on why nintendo consoles are better than sony consoles
i now have 8 hours to write it and be prepared to present it...but i have to poo really bad so that comes first
there are more game boy variations than there are total sony systems
N64, gamecube, wii, ds
vs
pS, ps2, ps3, psp
or hitler or something
it would be topical yet overdone by hippie fags
i don't even know who that sanchez fellow is
i don't do politics
my only argument will be that you can still point to things if you have no arms
