I could never figure this game out when I was younger.
We just knew it was cool as heck but then frustration set in. . .
It's not a game you really play for the goal. Like, beating the game and getting to the end isn't really the point of the game, IMO. It's more about the journey and the experience. For that reason, I consider it one of the few truly infinitely replayable games out there. It never gets old. The frustration is guaranteed, and it's all about how far you can make it, not necessarily making it all the way.
I personally enjoyed the 2nd one much more than the first.
For shame. And you're even a Diablo/Torchlight fan.
This is the original Diablo!
When I was a kid I thought that the 2nd one was the first one. :P I didn't own a Genesis though. I was a Nintendo-bro all the way up until the PS2 generation.
Kinda hope they have abit more instruction than the orginial versions. My prominent memory of the first game was not having the faintest idea what the hell was going on
Huh. I actually owned Ready, Aim, Tomatoes. Didn't know it had any tie-ins to anything.

I love ToeJam & Earl. I didn't care much for the second one, to be honest. So put me into that pile.
My friend and I would play the shit out of the game. I think we beat it while staying up all night (and then sleeping late, leaving the console on because it didn't save, IIRC), and then playing it immediately after waking up the next morning. It would just get so frustrating. You'd get poked or scared by the Boogie Man off of level like 18, and you'd fucking drop down to like 12 or so. And then you'd have to slog your way all over everything to get back up there.
Though, after we'd tomato every enemy to death, we'd spend HOURS running around every edge, inner or outer, to find secret paths.
I think I've beaten it a couple of times. I do know, that once in high school and after I had a job, I bought the game and Game Genie, and got sick revenge on everything.
GiantBomb quick look in case you need convincing. Looks to be Toejam & Earl and Panic on Funkatron. No Ready, Aim, Tomoatoes or TJ&E 3 (which I've never played but desperately want to).

Seriously.
You've got Diablo:
The Amazon:
Act 2 Bees:
Deckard Cain identifies all your items:
Treasure Goblins:
"You now speak to Ormus:"
I could honestly make comparisons between these two games all day. :P
Post of the year right here.

You never noticed both Toejam & Earl on the score screen?
