in the finals it's bo7 even though First hasn't actually lost yet? that seems silly.
It's Bo7 between TheStC and Leenock because TheStC came from the loser's bracket and Leenock from the winner's bracket. Leenock vs First will be a regular non-extended series.
The extended series rule will now go into effect only if the players have met before in the same phase of the tournament. This means that a match result in the Open Bracket or Group Play will not trigger an extended series in the Championship Bracket.
Like the Summer Arena, the Championship Bracket is now split into two double-elimination brackets, with the winners of each bracket meeting in a best-of-seven Final series. This ensures that the Finalists will not have met earlier in the Championship Bracket.
As a consequence of the above two changes, extended series are not possible in the Championship Bracket except for the Semifinal matches.
This is a pretty early MLG though, usually the match before finals finishes at 1-2 am, this one seems to be done earlier. Probably due to the lack of TvT at the end.

I don't mind that they're doing it, they're trying to work out the winners/losers part in the semifinals (upper and lower finals)
but first hasn't lost and he won't get an advantage for it which I just find surprising. I'm fine with it, I think finals should always be 7 games.
And well, looking at the crowds on stream, they are generally smaller. Maybe something else going on, or a smaller city?
The LoL crowd is way smaller than the SC2 one as well, and they are just coming up on the final game of the tournament. So not looking that bleak for sc2 to me!

I mean, it's in the same exact venue it was last year. No idea why it'd be smaller.
This MLG has had the worst player line-up since like, 2010, and they did absolutely no hyping before the event. I expect attendance to gradually increase as the season goes on.

Weren't the finals always best of 7?

Yeah but Winner's Bracket advantage is a thing. Typically they start 2 up in the bo7.

Well, he did get to avoid playing a ton of games today, which means he's better rested than anyone who dropped a game.

it's only a bo7 because STC won 2-1 over leenock making it an extended
He saw the Lair and Spire. He saw the banelings building. I mean, you can't always have perfect information. More bunkers would have helped, though.

Worth noting, that cheese doesn't even work that well anymore because Queens outrange Marines now.
Leenock!

Haha, I even thought it was Reapers and then went "no, they're 5, I must be thinking of Hellions."
I haven't played this game in a long time, in case you couldn't tell
