Router wifi problem, perhaps time for a new router?
So I got an email from my dad this morning saying that he unplugged our modem and router, but when he reconnected them neither his laptop nor wifi radio could see the router network. However, computers hooked up via ethernet work fine. I had him connect to the router's control panel and confirmed that it says it's broadcasting the SSID. He says he's restarted the router multiple times since then too. I'll have a closer look when I get home in about 7 hours, and I intend to take a better look at the settings and possibly do a full router reset.
Does anyone have any ideas? It's a Linksys WRT54GL router that I got about 4-5 years ago. I put DD-WRT firmware on it maybe a year later. It survived a lightning strike that blew one of its ethernet ports two years ago, and despite that the wireless has been fine.
Now, if it comes to getting a new router, what's good these days? We're having visitors this weekend, so I'd prefer to get a router from a local store tonight rather than order online. Hopefully this won't be necessary, but it'd be good to know for a future purchase anyway.
I liked it so much I bought one for my parents, my brother, recommended it to my friends, etc. I also came from a Linksys WRT54. My D-Link was able to handle 3 Xboxes (all wireless), multiple laptops, smart phones, etc. Now, I bought mine from Amazon so if you need one before this weekend, I can't help on that front.
I have been using Huawei E5186 and the signal strength is very impressive. My modem is upstairs, while the USB wifi adapter (connected to my PC) is downstairs,
and the signal strength is still relatively strong.

The good news is I was able to fix the router. Had to do a hard reset, but everything is back to normal!
