man I don't want to go to space. I can barely deal with how big the ocean is

The ocean scares me much more then space. The ocean just terrifies me.

The ocean's small enough(!) to be accessible mentally; we're just not built to wrap our heads around things that can be measured in light-seconds or AUs.

(Also, we know for certain the ocean has carnivores much, much bigger than us. That probably doesn't help.)

Actually when you think about it, the ocean at its deepest gets deeper than, say, the United States are wide. That is terrifyingly deep.

Now cube that for three dimensions.

Trust me, there are very few people on Earth who truly grasp just how much ocean there is.

How can that possibly be true? The U.S. is like a two thousand miles across? Maybe I am misunderstanding you...

The Mariana Trench is like 2,550 KM deep bro.

    No, no it's not.

When it gets about 90 degrees outside my air conditioner stops working.

We can put a man on the moon but we can't make a better air conditioner.

there seems to be a fundamental lack of knowledge about the Earth's size going on here

the fact that someone could read "2000 km deep" and think "yeah that seems reasonable" is like one step removed from thinking the earth is flat

Porno is just pictures of two (or more) people bumping uglies.

    Air conditioning is vastly superior.

  • -Tal-Tal Registered User regular
notice how all the best stuff started being invented after the invention of the modern air conditioner

you think they could have landed on the moon if that base wasn't exquisitely air conditioned

And don't go telling me the formula to figure the diameter using the circumference.

    I can't do maths.

  • KilroyKilroy timaeusTestified Registered User regular
    Divide the circumference by 3

You now know a rough approximation of its diameter

  • -Tal-Tal Registered User regular
Earth's diameter is only ~7900 miles

but I mean, you weren't the only person doing it, SimBen thought the same thing

thinking that the Earth has effectively infinite depth seems to be a common problem!

I about cried when I heard this, and I don't usually do that for celebrity deaths. It's just that it feels like, in losing Neil Armstrong, we've lost something more than just an amazing person. He (and everyone else who's gone to space, but especially him) was like a living example of why you shouldn't take the path of least resistance through your life.

This was sad news to wake up to, but the man did live a long life so it's making this a little easier to cope with

Neil Armstrong only lived about 16 miles away from me. I wonder if there will be anything local for him.
