it continues to be really strange to me that 'super heroes' hasn't as a general concept been more-used in online games; there's Marvel Heroes (way old at this point) and I think DC licensed a MOBA but other than that Marvel vs Capcom and the Lego games are really the only ones out there. Something like Destiny or The Division but with a 'superheroes' (whether they license marvel or do an original IP) coat of paint seems like it ought to be something that'd print money, but somehow nobody seems to be making it
I mean hell do Powers Bureau, that'd be a fun setting for a game

There is also champions online. But we don't talk about that.

I tried playing champions online once but I kept dying in the starting zone over and over and I wasn't really sure why it was overly difficult. It's not like I'm bad at video games but it played more like Lineage than it did a Western MMO.

I played at least one character to max level and don't remember having any real issues? The game has its hard parts, but they're not in the starting zone.
It just has a simple builder+consumer combat system where you build up energy and then consume it with big attacks. With a bit of fiddling you can customise it to play like a slightly clunky reticle based game.
It's an alright MMO, but I don't much care for the art style and it doesn't do anything well enough to keep bringing me back.
Champions Online was weirdly a lot more fun right before release. You were able to fight a dozen enemies at once and then the release day patch either nerfed the hell out of players or buffed mobs enough that you could only handle 2 or 3 at a time. That pretty much killed the game for me.
I think the reaction/action was a little strange and off putting. I couldn't quite put my finger on why I hated it but it seemed to be like a rhythm game but without the fun arkham batman rhythm shenanigans.

DCUO is still going, right? I get sucked into that one and then drop it because the f2p spam is obnoxious. But I'm surprised it doesn't come up here. Most CoH thing I've played since CoH. I started a character based on Jack Kirby's the New Gods one time and lost like 12 hours without realizing it.
It's a shame Champions isn't more fun and is pretty dead as far as new content goes, because damn was I able to make some amazing characters in that game. By far my favorite character creator, not to mention how free it was with your powers.
DCUO I'm a big fan of. The char creator is disappointing compared to CoH and CO, but the gameplay is pretty fun. That said, it missed a lot of things that an MMO needs to have to keep me playing it. I basically fire it up for a week or so every 6 months.

It's not just the super hero aesthetic of City of Heroes that makes me want it back. It's that it had a breadth of abilities and customization of them that other games probably wouldn't allow at all. It didn't have a gear equip system. You directly upgraded your powers.
Some friends on the PS4 got really into DCUO for a while (which they refer to as Duck-Woah, which I can't help but hear whenever I type that out), and I joined in on the PC to test it out, but I wasn't impressed. The character creator wasn't anything to write home about, the gear grind and zones I ran around in didn't exactly blow me away with the gameplay and storytelling, but it wasn't without some charm. The 'dungeons'/boss encounters did include a bit more in terms of mechanics that I enjoyed/appreciated, and as I got in during last winter or so, they did seem to have a pile of seasonal stuff going on. Maybe my time in CoH and WoW coloured things harshly for me, but it felt like the gameplay was restricted to account for players using controllers, and the graphics/UI weren't exactly endearing to me even on a gaming rig that could manhandle its requirements.
I really wanted it to be fun, if not amazing, as having a game be cross platform compatible was a first for us (and a rarity in general), but I just couldn't keep with it.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
I think I went through the tutorial mission of DCUO five times to try out new powersets before the urge to kill myself became dangerously overpowering.

Shame about Marvel Heroes. I'm sorry I never got around to checking it out, but now I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it. That has only been out for 2-3 years, right?

it was launched in June 2013, rebranded as Marvel Heroes 2015 so that they could get away from the deservedly terrible reviews from the game's launch, and rebranded again as Marvel Heroes Omega when the console version launched earlier this year

Wait, what was it called before it was "Marvel Heroes"? Or do you just mean the year was tacked on?
MH actually became a decent game with time. And then last year's series of... "events" (or lack there-of), from timed events not happening, periodic updates stopping to the guy in charge being revealed to be an abusive ass (and known to be one before they put him there).

I'm unhappy because this is another example of something I hate in our current era: video games that just go away.
I've got no investment in NCsoft's moba and some, uh, anti-vestment? in it. But it's still a shame for it to disappear just because the people in charge are done with hosting it.

This. So much this.
I actually had bought a lifetime sub, then got it refunded because the release patch made it unfun.

I'd love to see laws come out that require companies to release server executables to self host stuff

If you enjoy games with create your own superhero stuff, maybe check out Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2?
It's got a character creator that is actually pretty neat. Previous versions of the Lego games had character creators but your powers were determined by using bits from existing characters (so Iron Man's helmet gave you his powers, Cap's shield gave you his, etc.)
It would let you make unique kitbashes of characters but they were still kinda knockoffs?
However, the new game lets you truly customize your dude, choosing your own powers and weapons and even customizing them by color and damage type and origin point (like do you shoot your blast from your left hand, right hand, weapon, etc.)
It's an open world puzzle-platformer beat em up where you use your powers to solve relatively simple powers (these games are targeted to kids)
It is a single player game with local multiplayer only, but if you have an itch for a superhero game where you can make your own dude, it exists?

I dunno if I'm allowed to link this even though server emulation is legal (I think??????) but the dev team behind CoH emulator SEGS has finally put out their first release version of their custom server software, after working on it since 2006.
All it is right now is a way to run a server that, from what I can tell, has character creation, chat and movement, and that's it. No powers, broken movement, no animations shared between players, and it's only on Issue 0/vanilla launch CoH, but it's crazy that something has finally happened after 12 years.
Looking at it, server emulation is usually against the terms of the EULA (which is null and void in cases of dead games anyway, and of questionale legal enforcability otherwise), but as long as you're using your own code, rather than decompiled or stolen original server code, you're not technically breaking any laws.
Not that it's stopped large companies shutting down such servers through sheer amount of money thrown against them in court, of course.

Someone did one of those "RT if you can hear this image" tweets and it was a screenshot of the CoH login screen.
Oh man the login screen (and character creating screen) had some really appropriate music for City of Heroes. They caught lightning in a bottle with that game, and I still haven't forgiven NCSoft for shutting it down while it was profitable.

Well, that game's dead as of January 31st.
Marvel Heroes is also getting killed off - the servers are going down December 31st.
Ironic giddiness?

Now we just need to know how detailed / varied the powers will be. My hope has been restored though.

I died inside.
I used an old tool to change the login screen music to the Superman Theme, and now I literally can't remember what it was supposed to sound like.
