RIP City of Heroes

So, after eight years, City of Heroes will be shutting down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qcjoOdVHR8

So...I've been playing this game off and on since fall of 2004. It was my first MMO, and it's still probably my favorite. The old City of Heroes subforum here was one of the reasons I registered an account here, and it's also one of the reasons I started reading comic books in the first place. I lost an ATM card buying City of Villains, and purchased a really shitty tie-in novel because I'm an idiot. I've started and scrapped countless heroes and villains, and I've wasted hours and hours searching for exploration badges. Some of my favorite times playing video games have come from running around with a bunch of forumers in this game and seeing what ridiculous nonsense people could get up to with the character creator.

I'm angry and sad even though I haven't played it in months, though I always kept the game updated just in case I got the urge to play it again. And I always got the urge to play it again. Always. And in a few months, well, I won't be able to play it again. And it sucks.

So, post your favorite characters, share your stories, rage at the assholes that are shutting it down, do whatever. Hell, be one of the dicks that pops into every City of Heroes thread to say "this game has bad combat!" even though you probably play something dumb like Final Fantasy XI or fucking Champions Online like an idiot. But whatever.

Let's pour one out for the greatest MMO of all time.

I played this like every night with my brother. The Dev team was extraordinary, patient, and willing to actually change things based on user feedback. Hell they changed a long standing bug just 'cause someone mentioned it, and they said, "Oh, that shouldn't be like that!". I sincerely hope that the team does well in the future.

I got a copy of CoH for $5 with 3 months of service. I created and deleted over 50 characters but probably only spent an hour playing the actual game.

I eventually switched most of my dudes to Super Jump, which was awesome in its own way, but Flying was definitely wonderful. Also a good way to take a break and grab a snack or something

They were the first to get capes actually flowing and not stiff. I've been spoiled by the customization they offer and likely won't be able to get into another MMO.

I loved that flying had the benefits of flying, and that they didn't try and leash you or make some weird balance thing against the other travel powers. It was just, hey you can fucking fly, you can go as high as you want whenever you want.

  • DJ EebsDJ Eebs Moderator, Administrator admin
you could fly super early too! of course hover was slow as shit but you could get them exploration badges on top of atlas AND THAT'S PRETTY COOL

  • LanglyLangly Registered User regular
Yeah, I loved that shit. Hover had drawbacks, like being slow as balls and the accuracy debuff (right?), but it gave you access to lots of stuff super early and didn't try to find ways to hamper you or anything.

That was what I really loved about coh. They made the powers really feel unique and tried their best to give you the real, full benefits of them and make you feel like a super hero

Also, my one and only 50 character was an elec/devices blaster

I don't give a shit how gimped it was, charles langly was fun to solo.

I took a Fire/Fire tank to 50. They said it couldn't be done, that it shouldn't be done. Well, fuck those guys.

    so fucking mad about this

    so

    fucking

    mad

I have actively played this game for eight years. Occasionally I'd take a couple months break here and there but I always came back. I was in the motherfucking closed beta. I bought the paid expansions. Shit, when the game went F2P/Premium I even stayed subscribed and bought points.

I've invested hundreds of hours into this game. Hundreds. For a few months I ran a weekly campaign for some buddies of mine where I produced missions in the Mission Architect system that my buddies played through and then I branched the story based on where they wanted to go next. I've spent hours generating content for the game, Mission Architect stories that people loved and shit.

And in a couple months, it'll be gone. Just, gone. It's not like when they cancel a TV show, where you can still pull out the DVDs and enjoy it and share it with your friends who missed this beautiful gem when it was on the air. It's not like the awesome dark-horse of a game with the cancelled sequel.

No, once the servers go down, the game is just fucking gone. I will never be able to play it again. I will never be able to show people the game, I will never be able to just fire it up out of nostalgia and give it a good play for old times sake.

This wasn't just a game for me, it was a hobby. It's something I put time into almost every week for eight years of my life. And it's just going to be fucking gone.

It's like if Games Workshop announced they were not only going to cancel Warhammer 40,000, but they were also going to go into everyone's houses and melt all their hand-painted miniatures into scrap.

    so fucking mad

The parent company (NCsoft) made terrible stupid decisions on another game which bombed, so they're in debt. So they decided to can the one game of theirs that IS making money (Paragon Studios/City of Heroes).

Oh man, looking through all of my screenshots brings back so much good memories. Not sure people who weren't super involved can really understand how much this game meant.

It was profitable and has an insanely loyal user base

The F2P switch was actually a really good decision and they made a lot of money from it

But apparently, with NCSoft bleeding money out the anus on all of their other games, CoH no longer "meets the long-term goals for the company" and they're deciding to kill it.

It's not like they're gonna re-allocate those resources to Guild Wars 2 or something. All the Paragon Studios developers just got laid off.

I think one of the best things about this game was the lore, how in-depth it was and how different, seemingly disparate storylines ended up linking back together the more you learned about the origin of the NPC heroes and villains. Always hoped they had a sequel up their sleeves with some voice over in it, that's something I've always wanted.

also just running around and saving people from getting mugged. Don't really know why, but I found it hard to just run past someone getting their purse stolen. Good night and good luck, Paragon City.
