Is it weird I want this to clear beta before I pay money to play it? I played MW3 back in the day, and the game looks fun as hell, but $30 for beta access? WTF? Anyone here that could help me see the light on this?
No, it's not. It has a lot of...issues.
Put it in other terms: back when World of Tanks was in beta, you could not actually pay money (except when it went retail and the beta ended). Instead, the developers game a daily allowance of in game currency to test out the "real money" features.
They really shouldn't have charged money for it. Nor should this, in my opinion (I'm definitely glad I didn't give them money just to bypass the admittedly lousy trial period). Your patience is well founded.
Beofryn, such a choice was only an option if you threw your cash monies at one of the Founder packages.
If you DID throw money and got no Founder mech, make a support ticket, otherwise, enjoy your trial mechs until you can afford to buy a real mech with in game currency.
I could have sworn there was supposed to be a basic non-founder mech of each class to choose between even for F2Pers. Oh well, didn't take long even with the losses (still barely have a positive w/l ratio though!) to earn enough for my cent. Was thinking about fitting an XL but sounds like that's beyond me right now.
I wouldn't be able to say anything if I was in this. But I thought hard about springing for the founder's, and an event recently made me think about it again. But I will say: I definitely don't want to pay cash money for a program that is apparently impossible to even install on my machine, even after working with theoretical support.
Theoretical bug logged at least, I guess.
What is this I don't even.

Okay fine, but have you ever contributed to a kickstarter? I looked at it that way: I liked what they were doing with the license and universe, and I paid them $120 ($60 at first, then I upgraded my package). My money went to fund their development; I didn't just "pay to play the beta." I gave them financial support that included, in addition to access to the game: in-game currency, four founders mechs (that confer bonuses to xp and money earned in matches), and upgraded an account level for 3 months. It wasn't "$120 for a beta lol" there were "tangible" benefits for contributing, much like "rewards" for funding a kickstarter.
It's clear you don't like the game in the state that it's in; fine, because BETA. Hell, pre-BETA. However, there are more than a handful of us that derive get pleasure from it and will continue to do so. I'd say that, given my experience with the game (which from the sound if, it's the polar opposite of yours), yes it's worth funding this game. The founders packages are just that: you're getting in on the ground floor. You're declaring yourself a Mechwarrior Hipster.
You know, if we were in the BETA.

One more thing: Get on vent when you play, it makes forming groups so much easier when everyone's on vent.
First I really need a decent pair of headphones with a mic. Well, and to install vent, that'd prolly help.
The trial mechs? There should be a button that says "show trial mechs" next to the mech list in the mechlab.
I did find the trial mechs. Extremely irritating to not be able to tweak them to suit, but not having to pay repairs meant I was only forced to use them for a little while. Mostly just always loved making my big shiney new mech my own by ripping it apart and rebuilding it. I wanted to get into that ASAP.

Thing is, if you get in, they give you some MC to play with so you can get a mech right away with that, if you want.

Umm, nope. Was kinda expecting that, but never did see my MC rise above 0. I suppose I should check again tonight. maybe I needed to log out and back in to see some MC? I mean, if I had been playing. Which I totally was not. >.>
honestly it takes like 3 games, less than 30 minutes to get enough to buy a medium/heavy mech, and you can probably buy a commando after one game, i wouldn't really call it grindy

Missles are CT, and it has two energy hardpoints in the LT.
Something one might know if they owned all three Dragon variants, purely hypothetical of course.

I guess, assuming no victories it'd be two to get a commando, 4 or 5 for a heavy. WHen they stopped giving people free cash they also upped it so you get a minimum of 1000000 even for a loss, and if you're using trial mechs you have no repair/ammo fees so its all profit.
Pffffffft. I was piloting a Warhammer before they were re-Unseen.
Seriously. Anyone else play the original Mechwarrior? Or am I the only one that's that old?
Anyway, I have open house tonight. I should still be on, hypothetically, if I still have brain cells left after putting on a dog and pony show for das parents.

The only one variant has two hardpoints in the LT along with another two in the Left Arm, the other variants either have just one point in both locations, or two in the Left arm.
One of the variants also has two launcher slots in the CT, which might not seem like much (since there are only 2 critical slots free after the gyro and engine are accounted for) untill you remember that two SRM4s fire more missiles than 1 SRM6 for the same space, and two LRM5s weight a ton less than an LRM10.
I'm pretty sure, when the game actually goes live, they are giving you your choice of one free Mech regardless. The only thing that makes the founders Mech's special is the skin and cbill/XP bonus.

Mechwarrior 1 is the only one I haven't played. Earliest was the SNES version.
Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.
Is there not a way to play in no-premade match-ups?
What is this I don't even.

If you were hypothetically in Beta, you might want to hop on Vent and join our group as we may or may not be playing right now this game we can't talk about.

No, not at the moment. PAers are frequently on, though that may not work out for the schedule. I wouldn't be surprised to see them modify the matchmaking to have separate solo only/premade only/everybody matchmaking options at some point, but I would not expect it any time soon.
Me too! And then I dabbled with MW2 and haven't played any of the others til now (theoretically, were I in the Beta). Oh SNES Mech Warrior, you were so awesome.

Right? I hate when you have mediums and lights on your team and heavy or assault players break off to engage a Jenner. While you shouldn't completely ignore them, every shot you put on a Jenner or a Commando is a shot wasted as the rest of their team advances on you. Can't count the number of matches I've been one of maybe two people killed on our team as a scout only to have the rest of our team shred the opposing side.
Hell one match today I had an Atlas, a Catapult, and a Centurion all on me for about a good minute while the other four members of their team (one guy d/c'd in base) mixed it up mid-field. In spite of losing most of our PA guys, the pubs finally advanced from "defending the base" and ended up finishing what we had started.
Which is a point I'd like to touch on. Whenever I see someone chilling in base to "defend" it I want to punch them through the internets. With proper scouting and keeping an eye on the battlefield, you'll know when you need to peel off to engage an attack on the base. Besides, all you're going to do is end up dying alone if they are at all serious.

Proper scouting really is invaluable in this game, and it means more than just running around real fast. Good scouts are there to drop pinpoint fire when needed, harass the long-range enemies in the rear, split teams with cap attempts, finding out enemy position and direction, and interrupt caps long enough for slower teammates to bring the big firepower or allow friendlies to complete a cap for the win.
With even a single decent scout on the team, people hanging back to defend the base without better intel are basically useless simply because a good scout negates the need to split the team.
Also, patch tomorrow! Maybe for realz this time. I look forward to it.

HA. Same here. I loved it, but I had no understanding that there was a plot one could follow, because I'd spend much of the first part of the game playing arbitrage games with mechs until I could have whatever lance I wanted. By the time I'd settle down to blow mechs up, the plot had ended.

Also something I'd like to touch on, for our group is this. If you need help, please report where you are on the grid and what you are facing. The first because just saying help is like, hey I want to help you but I have no idea where you are. The second because it helps to know what resources to devote. Hey, if you're an Atlas with a couple of Jenners dancing around you, somebody in a fast Hunchback or one of our own lights probably will be enough to chase them off. But if you're staring down all three of the other teams' Assaults, we know to send the cavalry running.
Also really looking forward to the maybe patch so I can jump in a Cicada. I hear it's a fast medium, so I should be able to give it a decent loadout to act as a secondary scout, and NARCs sound like fun.

When did you sign up? They send out invitations, but then any account changes have to wait on the database resynchronizations. Think those were running weekly on Thursdays, but that is just a guess based on faulty memory.
I've been playing PUG matches since last week and i'd say that team-play is improving. Seeing more organized defense/attack style match-ups. Played a match in River City recently.
Opposing team held the elevation on the east end of the map with 1 Catapult and several awesomes/atlases and simply pounded us with LRM fire. We had Jenner, Hunchback, couple atlases, some k2 cats I think. Me and another scout tried to open up the southern flank along the river and were met with a small laser hunchback and an SRM commando. Managed to take out the hunchback with several alpha strikes and then chased the commando across the river into the city where he was trapped and destroyed.
Unfortunately, the LRM's had worn us down to the point where launching a frontal assault across the bridge was impossible as our slower mechs would be quickly dismantled by Gauss fire and our light mechs were too crippled to open the exposed flank on the South end of the heights. Eventually, the enemy heavies crawled in with fire support from the cats on the bridge and held the high ground to the north of the downtown and picked us apart piecemeal. Good match with some mixed 'mechs.
There are no more database synchs, they put the website and game info together, thus the wipe last thursday.
I second the request for details when calling for help. I'd love to help, but just saying "I need help with this atlas" is less helpful than "Atlas Hotel is tearing me a new one."
Grid coordinates help too, but I don't care about them as much as target designations. Your target Alpha is my target Alpha, and my target Golf is your target Golf, don't be afraid to call out those letters.
One thing that was mentionedthe other day during Commando time: when you're about to run headfirst into a teammate, try to dodge to the Right, if we're all dodging to the Right, we won't have a case of both veering off directly for the same spot.
