this is the final twist of the knife that ending commits
because if there was no destroy/control/synthesis choice, if the ending underlined the choices you had already made instead of exploding with one huge sweeping last one because "multiple endings" is a bullet point RPGs are perceived to need to have
then they could easily have set a story after the reaper war
sure, keep the import thing going, but only to decide which set of details are provided in the codex, because the story will necessarily shy away from directly dealing with the krogan or geth/quarians specifically
but no
some guy wanted to make some incomprehensible non-point about organic and synthetic states of being, whatever those mean, and now they gotta work around that mess
it is fucking unbelievable that the final battle of the mass effect trilogy was not shepard and all of shepard's friends and allies from throughout the series holding the line at the big dramatic council platform where you fought saren in ME1 against a horde of reaper forces to buy time for the prothean VI to work some magic with the crucible

I still want a turian detective investigating a murder on the citadel. Someone on the books thread was talking about reading a story where a detective is investigating a case even though an asteroid or something is like 2 weeks away from blowing up the Earth. I want that plot, only replace Earth with the citadel and asteroid with reapers.

how was mass effect not already very much like star trek
you've got your captain commander, you've got your special unique super cool ship, you've got your crew, you run around meeting aliens on distant planets

In the Reaper aftermath it is judged by the Council that resources may be insufficient for repairs on the scale required
A ship is outfitted and flung on an Asari-built Relay into the vast unknown to seek out new worlds, new civilizations ready to lend their aid (Or not/?!?!)
the thorian, the reapers themselves, shifty-looking cattle, vigil, the collectors, rachni, etc.
discovered by exo-geni, known by the geth and saren, i'll grant you this, i'll grant you this, have had encounters in the terminus system, rachni have existed and been known for a long time
I would love for a protagonist with a scientific/diplomatic background
I'd really love that. The main mass effect series is so chock full of ridiculous badasses and special forces soldiers you can hardly walk out the door without tripping over one.
I rather doubt it'll happen though, unless they change the style of gameplay.

I just boggle at why anyone would want that as a followup
we've spent a trilogy learning about these cultures and spending time with members of these species, so let's just throw all that away and go explore some new codex entries and exposition dumps
With longer onship sequences you could deepen the conversation options/system and shift the focus of the game onto carefuly diplomacy between deep-space-crazed crewmembers in order to prevent them from getting at eachother's throats before your next away surface mission

because they're known
even if you, the player, didnt know them before you went into them, the rest of the galaxy knew most of the things you discovered/learned
this would be completely mysterious and unknown and exciting

The difference is that after meeting the aliens you kill them

It's gotta be someone who still knows how to use a gun, but I'd like a background that allows for more non-combat sloutions
Agent of the shadow broker
It would be like alpha protocol but not shitty!

I want more crazy ship happenings like in your typical sci fi show (anomalies in space, enemy ships etc).
When the Normandy power fluctuated after Palaven I got a little excited.
no see here's how it should go
you're the overseer of a space station located between the batarians and wherever those human colonies were they attacked- the skyllian verge?
tensions are high between the humans and batarians
you have your loyal crew, including a few minor characters from the prior games made into main characters (the "funny bumps" citadel groundskeeper, that elcor with the cigar)
a batarian tailor, a volus bartender
I could go on
+3

I want to awesome AND agree that post but I am woefully incapable
May I also suggest a Geth Chief of Security who has become accustomed to existing as an individual entity while split from the wider Geth mind?
I would dig a game where you're a commander of a civilian ship exploring a jump and you get stranded on the other side with your ship on a planet. Crew's starting to fracture, food's running out, there's weird noises coming from the jungle, and hey why is there a hatch in the ground and where does it go?!?
Sorry.
Uh although then the problem with that game is I'd probably feel the same way as I felt the first time I played a Star Ocean game. Why set your game in a huge galaxy-wide sci-fi universe if you spend the whole time stuck on one goddamn planet? You shouldn't have a universe filled with awe and adventure if you don't get to go there!
Alternately I'd love a game set right after the first contact war. There was a little bit of wonder in ME1, with wandering around meeting strange new aliens... But humans still more or less knew what everyone's deal was, there wasn't a true sense of discovery. Being a human totally out of your depth, running some small investigation and traveling to strange new worlds where you've got no idea what the aliens deals are, and for that matter none of the aliens have seen a human before either would be great. It'd be a good intro for new players and vets of the universe could get a lot of satisfaction out of a normal human having his first run-in with an angry krogan.

it wouldn't take place afterwards with some sort of violation of the trilogy
maybe a prequel?
I dunno

Have it take place in the story that multiplayer sets up
Human, Geth, Krogan, Protheans- whatever
The prologue of the game involves choosing your crew
then it opens up to the main event

Kill a man for me.

Think they just straight up ruled out "military" as a possibility for a new protagonist
So that's interesting
